What kind of construction is the wall? Brick or stone with gypsum plaster? Lime plaster? Or plasterboard with a skim?

What can you see behind the peeled paint? Does it appear dry/dusty? Wet? Mouldy? Salt deposits on the surface?

There’s others too, but that’s the only one I can remember at the moment.

Depends how fit you are really I think. I don’t class myself as fit, But I still manage the steeper climbs on that side. They’re also direct enough that if you’re pushing it doesn’t take that long.

I tend to park at Backvein rd. and do a trail or two in Machan, then one or 2 at Mynyddslawen and one or two at Cwmcarn. It’s short roll from the bottom back to the van.

More than happy to show you around that loop, drop me a mesaage on here if you fancy it.

Good deals on Sram drivetrain parts at fifecycles. Including X01 derailleur for £115, only one left now I’ve bought my though!

Really hope Conti either improve the enduro casing or bring out a halfway house between it and the Dh casing.

Love the Kryptotals, it’s a real shame they’re just not up to the job. I’m not usually hard on tyres (never flatted a Wild Enduro) but have so far ripped holes in 3 rears and 1 front. I’ve kept making excuses and trying again but that’s the best part of £300 worth of ties in the bin with very little use. I don’t really want to have to drag dh casing tyres around so back to the Michelins for now.

Did you actually bin them? Depending on where the holes are they may be quite easily repairable. I slashed one that had done less than 3 miles, I could put my thumb right through it.  I got some kevlar cord and stitched it up, and then patched the inside  and used shoe goo over the stitches on the outside. It has since done hundreds of miles on the back of my enduro bike,  mostly very rough & rocky alps chairlift runs. Including the Nauders 3länder race, which killed many tyres from what I saw.

I’ve had this twice. Once on a pair of superstar (red, I think they were) around 16 years ago, and a few months ago on my van. The superstar one was much cheaper to fix than the van episode, which took out the caliper as well.

I live in the FoD, and don’t often need a map but I would find a proper off piste trail map that is updated by assigned ‘officials’ to show whats closed for felling, what’s running well etc incredibly useful…. I am disappointed by this thread, but enlightened at the same time.

Pretty sure drivers for hunt hubs are about £50, so much cheaper than a sram cassette.

But, if you need to replace chain and cassette soon anyway the xd system is a bit lighter than the HG or microspline, so rhat may swing it for you.

Edit: I reckon xd cassetes last longer too, so that helps get some of the investment back as well.

I’ve never been, so I can’t really comment on the area – but a friend who used to live in Hereford now runs a Gite near St Gaudens. It’s on facebook  ‘pyrenees view holiday gites’  Apparently a good area for cycling and walking and the town decent too.

Been meaning to get down there, but haven’t made it yet.

Also, if you put it in the 52t and whip the mech battery out no thieving douchebag can ride it any faster than about 5kph if they try to steal it while you’re waiting on post ride chips.

    User name checks out….

Are you remembering to refit the battery afterwards?

Yep, 2.35 width has been replaced with 2.4. The super trail casing came out at the same time as the widths changed,  so the old 2.35 were either snakeskin evo, or super gravity and no super trail 2.35 existed afaik.

Monmouth has a tennis club, rowing club and leisure centre. Canoeing and kayaking on the wye too. I’m 10 mins drive away onthe edge of coleford and the riding and walking from the door is excellent. Not many employment opportunities in the immediate area, but plenty of options an hour away in Bristol, Worcester,  Gloucester, Cheltenham.  Loads more top notch riding wihin an hours drive west into the south wales valleys too.

Downsides of Monmouth – a lot of it floods or is at risk of flooding. Houses are more expensive than up the road in the forest of dean. The town centre is slowly dying but is still pretty decent compared to most, especially the towns in the forest of dean which are all dead, apart from Coleford which is just about hanging on with a couple of good pubs and a few independent shops.

I’d say Malern and Ledbury are better towns by some margin, but the riding isn’t as good or plentiful.

Another one using plutoline hpxr here. Have done for a few years now

Had 3000 miles on some shimano brakes on the last enduro bike, and 2500 miles on the current trail bike with no issues, only the improvements mentioned above. Main benefit for me is easier bleeding in cold weather.

I have some riding trousers (Leatt somethingorother) they get used for walking far more than riding because they’re just too warm on the bike unless its 0° or lower. I’m definitely a shorts guy for riding. They’re not great for walking beacuse the cut means my boots keep filling up with dirt, pine needles and grit.

But, on a hanging, wet and cold uplift day they help keep the mud off my legs and the water out of my shoes.

Thanks trailrat. Should be o.k then, it’s only the 2 of us in a small, one bathroom 3 bed. The heating isn’t on much due to wood burners, oil prices and tight fists.

Gutting, this is an amazing event. one of the best I’ve ever done, I’d have been signed up for this years as well but it clashes with the 3länder in Nauders. Hopefully they can run it next year.

Not sure if this has been reported already or not – messaging not working. I can get into the messages page, and read the message at the top, but it won’t let me read any of the older messages.

Tricky one. The conditions vary hugely across the island, and each day. When I rode it I used a wild enduro front and a wild enduro racing on the rear for a bit of extra puncture protection. An Assegai and dhr would probably be a good combo if you normally get on well with them – there’s a lot of dryer loam and the mud isn’t particularly deep anywhere when it does get wetter. The most slippery surface you will encounter ‘madeira ice’ is slippery whatever tyre you run so you just have to pick a good line, stay off the brakes and hope for the best on that stuff anyway. Something not too draggy is a bonus as well, most of the trails are quite flat and the majority of the corners have very flat exits so braking early and a fast rolling combo will help carry speed.  A strong casing for the rear is worthwhile too in my experience.

Have fun, it’s an amazing week.

    Thanks mark88.

I’ve not been before,no.  I’ll leave the Argotal on the front for now then and make up my mind after practice.

Looking forward to it, it sounds like a good event.

Take it do a decent shop, they should have a headtube reaming and facing tool for IS42.

Edit: as long as there’s enough meat in the bore to leave a face for the angled seat of the bearing to sit against. If not then there might be a different standard it could be reamed to suit instead.

As long as the steerer is a standard diameter then fitting an IS42 headset should be straightforward. And if it isn’t then a spacer could be made at a machine shop.

Blazing bikes have 2022 session 9 in all sizes at 30 odd percent off, which seems a decent deal to me.

Tempted by one myself,  but if I buy another bike I’m probably going to end up getting divorced….

I had this a couple of years ago.  Got a blood test and it turned out to be a vitamin deficiency, B, or maybe it was D, not sure now. Come to think of it I’ve been pretty sluggish again lately so I could probably do with getting back for another test.

@bear-uk I did like the feel of my shigura setup, I’d have stuck with it if the hoses hadn’t started leaking too. Iirc a hose was nearly as much as a complete brake at that point in time, so I’d had enough and went back to shimano. They definitely work with non-servowave levers, I guess it depends what kind of feel you’re after. I’d been trying to get away from the on/off feel of servowave and the M4100 levers definitely deliver there, nicely controllable power and bags of it when you need it with both the Magura and Shimano calipers.

    peanutcracknell

@bear-uk why do you need servowave levers? I ran Non-servowave shigura after one too many leaks from MT5 levers, but eventually the Magura hose started leaking where it went into the banjo on the front brake so I went back to full shimano, 4 or 5 thousand trouble free miles ago.

For me the answer is M4100 levers, shimano 4 pot calipers, 2.3mm trp rotors, plutoline HPX r fluid and Galfer purple pads. Works at home in the cold slop on slow off camber stuff where you need precise control of the brakes, and in the alps on hot days/massive heavy braking days and everything between.  CBA with Maguras leaking and fragile plastic levers.

There’s a few at our company who are on minimum wage, mostly young people.  Rather than give them more money per year, and then do the same for the larger number of people who are paid a little over minimum wage, and a little more for the next tier up to avoid upsetting anyone (we have a staff retention problem as it is) they have dropped our working hours from 40 to 37.5, this includes the loss of 1x 15 minute break per day and kept annual pay the same, giving the effect of a per hour wage increase. It’s a win in many ways – 40 hours is at the upper end for a standard working week, we have staff who will still get the same amount done per week and the annual wage bill will be roughly the same. On top of that most of us will get to go home half an hour earlier. Downside of course, is that anyone who was struggling to pay their bills isn’t going to be any better off.

This might be the wrong okace to ask 5his question (I have no idea what ‘detailing’ is) but does anyone have any extending hosepipe brush recommendations suitable for a large van that gets a wash once or twice a year? I can’t reach the top of the sides from the ground, and it’s difficult reaching the middle of the roof from a ladder too. The only ones I’ve had before have been sh1+ and end up leaking after a couple of uses.

Maybe not as suited to fort bill as a G1, but for most enduro style trails I’ve got on really well with my Prime.

    https://primebicycles.com/product/thunderflash?color=1&build=S&size=L

Not really sure what the ‘fully landed’ cost is in the u.k, but it’s a great bike with a great spec. The suspension is amazing, and the overall balance of the bike is really nice too. I was skeptical of the low stack, but but I went with the 480 reach large at 6ft 2 and I think the slightly shorter reach than previous bikes I’ve had helps balance out the lower stack. It feels great on flatter trails and has amazing balance on steep tech.  I’ve found Prime to be really responsive with after sales support as well.

Personally I wouldn’t go for the Megatower without budgeting for a shock, fork and wheel upgrade. Nice frames and finishing kit, but the main components aren’t right for a bike of that price and if you’re after the best performance then budget suspension and cheese rims just aren’t going to cut it.

My last ever crc orders arrived today too, ordered on the 14th and 15th so a decent turnaround really considering the situation.

The lifeline pro wheel truing stands are down to 50 stirlings now, so 45 with the 10 extra code. I was optimistically hoping they’d go a bit lower, and maybe they will – but there was only about 100 left, and I don’t want to miss out.

So that’s my final CRC order done. Probably…..

Either, sympathy and a massive well done to all the staff  caught up in this.

Banshee Scirocco. Or Santa Cruz Chameleon.

Light enough to pedal all day, and strong enough to to take a pasting too.

My scirocco has been down world cup d.h and 4x tracks,  through many dirt jumps, round and round skate parks/bowls, plenty of local d.h/enduro-before it was called enduro type stuff and I probably did a good few thousand pedally/trail/xc type miles on it too. These days it’s just my jump/skate park bike but that bike was ace. My only bike for a few years and while I travelled around Australia in a campervan and it sucked up everything I could throw at it.

As Tom-B says, I’m assuming you mean a 90cm range cooker. We’ve had our 90cm induction hobbed Rangemaster Elan for 3 years now. We love it and it’s been faultless as was the gas hobbed one we had in the last house for about 8 years.

Down to the last of the top spec megas and gigas now in small and xxl. The code EXTRA10 works on CRC, bringing a 6.5k bike with XX/X0 AXS t type, Zeb ultimate,  code rsc and revive dropper down to less than 3k. Worth buying to then do a frame swap, even if you hang the wrong size giga frame on the wall!

I have some on my new bike. Been o.k for 4 rides…. they are carbon so I’m a bit wary of them, me and carbon cranks don’t have a great track record together.
Probably not much help I know…. Nice cranks though, hopefully they’ll last longer than race race!

Yes, we have the maps from the extent of highway search.
It’s most definitely a boundary/r.o.w dispute, he maintains that it’s his land and not the road. When I showed him the extent of highway map he said ‘ahh, yeah, but that map is wrong’ and produced a hand drawn map from 1853 and said ‘there ya go, that’s where the road ends’ Bizzare that as a car mechanic he seems oblivious to the fact that the internal combustion engine wasn’t even mass produced at this stage…. and our cottage was still 10 years away from being built – both things that could have led to the highway boundary changing….
Initially we just want to besure if the highway boundary, find out where we stand legally, what access rights do we have over this bit of road It may be that there’s nothing we can do about it, in which case there’s always the frozen sausages option!
