I’m clueless about lights. Is it a be seen light or a seeing light?

That is really nice. I need to get cracking with a build for my middle son soon. I haven’t been biking for very long so don’t have the parts bin – it gets a bit expensive buying bits!

Maybe, the weights are wrong? My son’s 16″ bike is only 7kg too.

    8.5kg for the 2015, 9.7 i think for the 2014.

Anybody know how the Beinn20 small compares to the FRog 52 size wise? Looking at pictures, they both say 10″ frame, but the Frog’s chainstays look longer.

Like it :) And you resist the temptation to get him to try “no hands” :D

Most importantly: how tall is he, and what is his inside leg measurement?

hatter – looks nice and small!

Mine started on a pedal bike at 22 months and he was tiny. Was a “Noddy” bike with 10″ plastic wheels. He couldn’t reach the ground to stop and start, of course.

For his second birthday he got a Specialized Hotrock 12 – still couldn’t reach the ground for about 6 weeks even with the seatpost cut down..

    johnathan – how weird.. :?

He is better at lifting the back wheel up if he has something to “jump” up

No comments on his video yet apart from a random lady commented on one of them “Cute and fierce just like his Grandad” :x

Luckily I’m not taking it that seriously, and luckily the three year old can’t read yet…

I’m feeling brave – watch very very carefully…

And if there are any more dislikes I know it was one of you tossers!

Yup, our problem with the Uvex Hero is that even when it is tightened up, it still slips up the forehead – especially in the advent of a faceplant :(

We got a Uvex Hero which looks good but for my son’s head shape doesn’t quite seem to fit right :(

smurf – when your kid outgrows this bike, I’m buying it, ok?

racing on pedals at 3 – get in!

Mine did his first race on pedals at 2 :P Mine is also small for his age (as I said up thread his measurements put him as only just big enough for the Cnoc14 – he has been riding a 16″ for almost a year and can ride a Beinn 20 small).

I know what you mean about sentimental attachment to their bikes – I built up my son’s from a cheap bike I bought on ebay. I will be sad when he no longer needs it!

jonathon – is yours coming up 4 or coming up 5?

It was the gearing as much as the wheel size

Yeah, my son’s 16″ bike is 22-16 for our hilly trails (and he was still only 2 when it was built) so top speed is slightly lacking. Planning to put a bigger chainring on, and longer cranks.

FunkyDunc – A second hand Beinn Small I was watching on ebay went for £215! Another for £175. I don’t think there are any other 20″ bikes that are as small framed as the Islabike, but I would be delighted to be corrected!

We had very bad timing with our littlest – his birthday is in November so even in his final year in the under 6s he will still only be 5, when some of the others will be only a couple of months away from being 7 by the final race…

I’m sure he will smoke ’em though (but only on the correct wheel size  )

Aw lovely, mine started on Puky too.

helped a fella decide that both his kids needed to size up.

My 8 year old had a turn of a small-framed 27.5″ bike that belonged to a 10 year old (not that much taller than him) and has decided that with his puny 24″ wheels he is seriously under biked…

    peabrain

And if you think under 6s is serious just wait until under 8s, or under 10s

Some of the parents are very competitive! And some of the kids too…

    big wheel advantage is significant

That is our plan for next season to move up to the Beinn 20 small. He’ll be 4 by then. Under 6 racing is serious business

Anyone wanting to try their kid on an Islabike should just take go along to a kids bike race. There will be dozens of Islabikes to choose from and people are always happy to help :D

My son is only 98cm tall with an inside leg of about 39cm and he can get on one and ride it fine, but it is still too big for him. So your son should be fine.

*edit* Just looked at the Islabike size chart and have seen that my son’s measurements put him as only just big enough for the Cnoc 14 :| He has been riding a 16″ bike for almost a year!

Now you have to decide Ridgeback or Islabike…

I just imagine that smaller wheeled bikes are easier to learn on- is this right?

I really don’t know. However I think that if the bike was a bit too small then it might be harder to pedal if his knees were coming up to his chin…

Mine has been on 16″ wheels since just before he turned 3 even though he is small for his age. The difference in the bumpy/rocky/rooty trails he could manage compared to the 12″ wheels was astonishing. Even though he is only 3, he does do gnar and seems to find his “little bit too big” bike chuckaroundable enough.

*edit* just noticed he is moving from a balance bike. In that case 14″ might be better to learn on so he can get both feet comfortably flat on the ground.

I watched that video thinking **** that. My 8 year old took one look and said “That looks fun!” Oh dear…
