Second hand rigid 20″ mtb and put drop bars on? Would that even work?

Very nice. What was the total cost for the build?

I wish I could get my husband to come mountain biking with me and the kids, but he won’t even try it :(

It would really help because the boys are 4 and 8 and could really do with each of them being taken on a different trail with a parent each.

Oh well, it isn’t going to happen…

Onza mini saddle is what I used for my son’s bike if you do decide to go down that route.

He was 2 when I built the bike and still uses it age 4.

My 8 year olds Spinner Air 24 was only about £60, but it only lasted a few months (the lockout may or may not have been left on coming down the red trails at Glentress…)

That is as good a reason as any!

    I’ll have a think…

Why not a moulded seatpost one btw?

I think I would go for the 28″ they can be adjusted in, but not let out iyswim :)

    I should hope not!

I think the 16″ should be fine. My just turned 4 year old is smaller than yours (98cm with a 39cm inseam) and the 14″ looks tiny. In the summer he was able to get on and ride a Beinn 20 small.

However if you were wanting to get him off the stabilisers it would be handy if he could get both feet down easily…

Thanks cliffyc it was much appreciated, and Happy New Year to you too! And all the others you know who you are!

Sorry it took me so long to reply but I had to get all the stickers off first…

So if you ever see a family out on the trails with every inch of their bikes and helmets covered with stickers, you know who we are so come and say hello!

Fox pee wee elbow ones are great. My 4 year old also has the knee ones. We haven’t been out that much on the bikes since we got them, but he does find them comfy and I think they will come in useful on jumps and the faster trail centre trails he likes to do.

I don’t know anything about BMX racing but I think the clubs usually have a few bikes for kids to try out so you could try that?

    matt, have mailed :)

Fox peewee elbow pads are good, the knees are a bit stiff and plasticy.

We have the same question. 8 year old son wants to spend his savings and Christmas money on a GoPro (with me and siblings chipping in so we can use it too). Not sure whether Hero or Hero 3.

No smartphones here so that stuff isn’t important.

For you though: don’t swap it – your wife bought it for you and it might hurt her feelings…

You’re welcome :) Also Turn3 Racing on Facebook. More expensive though, and they don’t go as small.

PS I am envious of your ability to make your own frame! If I could I would make an aluminium frame with sliding drop outs to convert from 16″ to 20″ wheels…

Unfortunately, all the bits are from a Ridgeback MX14 with the solid steel cranks, so although the steel frame is way lighter than the original ally one, it weighs a ton

phutphutend – get yourself on to Spawn Cycles and order some cranks! Cost me about £35 delivered for some 89mm alloy ones.

netmums is very different from Mumsnet.

This thread on Mumsnet ishilarious due to the direction it takes at the top of page 27 :D

Her brother is 2.5 now (And only about an inch shorter than his sister)and really needs to come off his plastic “Bike” and on to the rothan

Stick him on the cnoc (with pedals) he might surprise you!

If she could ride already I would probably say the Beinn, but as it is a bike to learn on I would go for the 16.

As you say she has a younger sister.
