250ml glasses of wine 8O That’s 3 glasses in a bottle… I still live in the olden days where you get 6 glasses to the bottle.

I think I was quite lucky with the 16″ bike I found. It is a Merida Dakar 616 (the girls version) and the frame is smaller on it than most 16″ bikes, I would say. About the same dimensions as the Spawn 14″ bike (yes, I’m sad I checked)

I went for the first time on Saturday as my middle boy was riding in the youth mini downhill. I really enjoyed the whole thing, absolutely brilliant fun.

Yes 12″ bikes are heavy (even the Hotrock). My youngest learnt to ride ages before he was big enough for a 14″ though, and I was left wishing that Islabikes do a 12″ version.

I reckon as more and more kids have balance bikes (and getting them younger as well – I have seen a photo of a 9 month old on a Strider) the more people will be wanting smaller good quality pedal bikes. And maybe the industry will eventually follow?

My son was 83cm tall when he learnt to ride a bike, still 5cm too small for even the Rothan balance bike according to the Islabike size chart. Even now at 3.5 and 93cm the chart says he isn’t tall enough for a Cnoc14 (and looking at frog bikes he isn’t even tall enough for their balance bike yet!). He rides a 16″ btw…

    Frog 43

I think it is a bit bigger than the Cnoc 14 – minimum inside leg of 43, cnoc is 38

My almost 8 year old is 133cm and has been riding a Hotrock 24 for a few months. It is heavy (just about to lighten it up a bit with a Spinner Air) but he does really well with it.

I’d say for the type of riding he does (technical singletrack/Laggan red and black) it is only just small enough

But when you have young/small toddlers a normal bike is too small to let them get their feet to the ground.

I’ll join in the willy waving (sans willy). Balance bike at 19 months, pedal bike (no stabilisers) at 22 months. And at 3, this:

This is my son when he’s just turned 7 on his 16″ BMX

Nice and small to throw around (the BMX not the boy, he’s a bit heavy now…).

My almost 8 year old has a 16 inch mafiabike BMX. You also get Cult 16″ and a few others.

He is also tall for his age but I will probably keep him on a 16″ until he is 9 or 10 then move up to 18″. The mafiabike 16″ says age 5 to 10

My 3 year old only uses his front brake as it is a Tektro v-brake and his rear brake is sidepull. He has no problem modulating, and it means no skidding down trails! He can even come to a fast stop on a fairly loose surface with no problems.

That reminds me, my friend’s daughter was going down their really steep winding driveway on her Hotrock when the chain came off…

My youngest had a Hotrock 12 from the age of 2 to 3. He quickly got the hang of the coaster brake and could modulate nicely as well as do awesome skids

It does make it harder for them to start off but as geoffj says they just scoot to get going. Also when they are standing up on the pedals it is possible to accidently hit the brake. Also it makes the bike heavier than it should be.

Poor Americans with their “sidewalk bikes must have a coaster brake” law – even the Islabikes have to have the coaster brake :?

It is possible to disable the coaster brake, or I guess find a new wheel. (Somebody on here was selling two Hotrock 12s without the coaster brake fairly recently?). The only thing if you do take away the coaster brake the front brake is sidepull and IMO not very efficient.

We upgraded to a 16″ bike just before my son turned three as with the small wheels he was struggling with any distance/hill or roots.

I’ve noticed that since google maps changed when you try to drag the route to change it it does end up in a total mess

Yup balance bikes are awesome. First two kids didn’t have balance bikes, but had pedal bikes with stabilisers. They were riding pedal bikes at 4 and 6.

    Second two had balance bikes:
-balance bike at 2.5 then pedal bike at 2 years 11 months
-youngest had balance bike at 19 months then pedal bike at 22 months
