love to be able to calculate (fairly) accurate calories

afraid the calculations are very generic. And its more dependent on your body, how fit you are and how its metabolises food. Did yo have a rest day before the training session? Body metabolises food differently post exercise. And so on. My view is divorce training from weight loss or calorie burn. Control weight by diet and train as you need to train. This means scales and BMI.

Yes exercise and diet are a very good way to loose weight. But once your fit things change. You need less food and water for the same energy output because your burning less. Whereas the calculations pretty much assume a steady state.

many people set goals in life and achieve them. Which can mean they never set their goals high enough. To achieve the best you can, be prepared to fail. Something many aren’t comfortable with.

Z3 is pretty low. Your sessions describe good endurance regime. I’d change your turbo training and include some harder interval sessions. Mix up your length, speed, hill work MTB road etc.

so you buy a £XXXX k bike and transport it in cardboard? Evoc all the way, used it since 2010. Never been let down. I had to replace couple of the internal sacrificial straighteners as they had been crushed at some point near the bottom. Easy fix from local hardware store some plastic pipe same dimension, they slide in. Just goes to show what the bag potentially protected me from – broken bike at destination and ruined holiday.

I’ve used mine about 15 times in total plus loaned it out twice. Its still going strong. If your doing one trip – hire one or beg

we are no further forward financially

wouldn’t argue with that, same as people slaving over huge mortgage for large house. It becomes all consuming for what? Makes you happier? Doubt it. You certainly miss out on quality stuff.

nothing can prepare you for the tedium of the turbo though

set up in front TV, throw DVD in, sufferfest on Ipad etc etc

throwing life for a ‘house’ no thanks

I grew up in the country on a farm in Cornwall, lived on it for years. People look at living in the countryside through rose tinted glasses. Certainly an issue when you leave school looking for a job. Countryside virtual zero employment without wheels.

Nearest place for children gym swimming, school, after school activity, day care, two cars, on a road, 2 hours commute a day, nearest shop, dental, doctor? Need I go on.

House, something people seem to pump money into their whole life. Then hang on to the four or three bedroom house in case the kids visit.

Don’t get me wrong I live within 1 km of the nearest wood and start of my trails. But I can jog to my gym in 15 mins, shop on the way back. Train station 20 min walk. 9 miles to motor way, 22 mile major city.

wouldn’t buy on main road. Must be easy commute. 2 hours a day plus the cost? No thanks like 10 hours a week wasted life. I had three children. Id would have been worried that they would wander out on to that road and they need transport and friends. Wife needs own car for school run nursery etc

I moved after I retired early. It made sense to be close to work to cut commute to minimum. I cycled. Make life as easy as possible while I was working.

Not claimed for bike but insurance paid out four k for hearing aids after they fell out of my pocket on the bike and were run over by traffic. To my shame I was on a road bike. Home and away with Halifax covered bikes as named items. Get a quote, most insurances do it. Think up to 30 days away in one stretch

Basecamp, garmins free download route making software

Try it, it reads your OS SSD map and let’s you plot tracks or trails then upload to garmin. Once you get the hang of it you won’t bother with the web ones. Just my view.

Apparently very capable but it only has something like 40 or 50 missiles onboard and needs to return to base to re-arm

yes perhaps we also do RAS, resupply at sea. Just guessing of course …. Id suggest 40 – 50 missiles is pretty good given its capabilities but the well informed armchair admirals might know something else? ha ha

can launch 8 missiles in under 10 seconds while simultaneously guiding up to 16 missiles to designated targets at any one time.[4] The British PAAMS(S) variant consists of both the SAMPSON and S1850M long range radars and is capable of tracking in excess of 1,000 targets at ranges of up-to 400 km. BAE Systems also claims that its SAMPSON radar has “excellent detection of stealth aircraft and missiles”.[5]

complexity of the systems needed on modern ships, from power plant to weaponary, via radar and battle field info systems has sky rocketed.

this is very true. Remember much of what they do is innovative and cutting edge.

Buying off the shelf isn’t as easy or straight forward as it seems.

when I was working the priority was making the commute to work as easy or short as possible. That’s what I have to do every day of the week.

So if the design is contracted out why the pop at “civil servants”

because they then change it or amend it because of spurious commercial reasons with letting the contract.

They don’t understand the technical detail of the solution that’s delivered or the project theory and practice. Most have zero industry experience or in anything else. Often straight from classroom to work.

They are under paid and under qualified.

    From my experience –

Me ‘ok your a project manager, what qualification do you have, APMP or Prince2 etc?’

Civil servant ‘I don’t have a qualification, I have competencies’

I could go on. They should be paid better BUT be qualified.

Traffics very bad but your close to MTB nirvana in south Wales, Afan, Cmw Carn, Quantocks, FoD, BPW etc etc

House prices are high but consider looking in the surrounding areas, train connections to FoD etc very good and cheap

I commuted 80km a day there and back most days when it was dry.

    dirtyrider thanks

so I can run extension – need max 10m for a USB to dongle so connecting the ant computer

I have pretty good wifi in that room as well

or maybe one of these Tacx Vortex Smart Trainer, seems a lot cheaper

My thought was to run the monitor @ 10m from the computer via extension lead and key board via USB. That’s easy, ideally I want to connect the turbo to computer via USB to and assume I don’t need ANT?

njee20, using old magnetic for past 4 years which a mate gave me for free so thinking of buying a Wahoo KICKR. Turbo sits in living room. Computer on same floor in a coach house.

Its up grade time, I enjoy using sufferfest but zwift seems really good

    Pawsy_Bear

I presume I can play my suffer fest videos on the computer but it must some how transmit to the turbo?

    USB cable?

    Pawsy_Bear
    Free Member

Ethernet cable for big group rides or races, it’s rock steady.

Currently enjoy old magnetic turbo over last four years. But want to upgrade.

Turbo is in living room, think instead of laptop I would run Zwift on the desktop and just run extension lead for monitor to turbo. Would this work? How would the turbo transmit to the computer in another room? Can you transmit the info from turbo to computer via USB or another cable.

    Thanks

I suspect, don’t know, that BAE built it to the spec that was in the contract. MoD is staffed by civil servants. Although the expertise on design is contracted out.

) being asked to do more than was originally specified. It’s unclear

is often the case for failure and delay. Services are often the problem in changing their minds and in some cases gold platting the solution.

However if yo want the best at the edge of what’s possible technology wise these things happen, its not a perfect world.

My experience on large contracts with people like BAE is very good, they often do more than asked and provide very good solutions which often founder on the rocks of the civil service.

See what I did there, nautical pun……

Depending on how you ride there is nothing wrong with it on the back in a wet winter

how I ride? Not much use for climbing or much else in the Forest of Dean in winter

I run low pressures and tubeless. A HR on the rear is flat out better in the mud. You tried climbing anything muddy with an Ardent?

Not sure where your riding but conditions here need tread. Unless you just ride trail centres

Great tyre for rear for dry summer only, use with HR up front. Great combo

One thing I don’t understand is why he’s only banned for two years? I’d have thought, given his previous, he could be banned for a lot longer at no cost to the tax payer and remove a dangerous driver. As it stands it ends six months before he’s released. Noted he will be out before that on good behaviour etc. So where’s the protection for the public by only banning him for two years?

Dog owners, some need to have an aggressive huge dog to go with their gold chain, tracky bottoms. Worse they often combine this with small children who are more at risk. Plenty of idiots around

worth a look for context and perspective. The size and scale of change is way beyond human cause. One ice sheet was three miles high over London. Change is inevitable and over time will be huge

thin light weight tyres, go tubeless and change tyres. RRon etc well known to be paper thin. HR2 here at 20 psi max, strong robust and the odd time they have punctured stans fixed them and I just pumped back up.
