start slowly don’t ride tomorrow give your ass a chance to recover. It will toughen up. But if you suddenly increase mileage then it will be sore.

You should talk to both your children about it together as a family, explain the facts. Be honest and stick to the facts. It’s one of the recommended ways of dealing with traumatic situations.

800 used daily and kept charged still doing sterling service. Don’t let the battery get flat is a good bit of advice. If its stored or not used keep charging it up. Maybe connect to computer and upgrade the firmware/software. Mine has even survived totally submerged and just got a wipe off. Had one of those rubber cases from new maybe that’s what saves it

plus one, just replace the cling on bits, go compact 50 – 30 upfront and 11 – 28 or even 32 if your really in pain at rear. Why replace the bike when you really only need to change the gearing?

You’ll save a wad of money if your happy with the frame. 105 is fine Id challenge all but the pickiest to see a real difference between this and Ultegra. Your only riding 50 miles.

Depends how much use it gets? Typically five to six years 100 mile a week average. Mostly because technology imoves on, tubeless, dropper and 1 X 11 are just great additions to your ride. Why wouldn’t you want these? Depends on what how you ride ofc. Carbon is a thing to

I confess I have added to the CO2 of the planet by now using CO2 cartridges to inflate my tyres if I have a puncture.

This has been my experience and I recommend older athlete’s read this:

How Aging Athletes Can Get Faster (Yes It’s Possible)

I’d say that apart from weight the key points have been:

    good diet, high protein
high intensity work outs (turbo, road hills)
rest and recovery with some periodization and adaptive time
    practice skills for MTB riders

Warning signs for the older athlete? Simple, over training and lack of recovery. You keep going out and your not at your best results in junk miles.

If your overweight that will slow you down more.

I’d say I’m fitter now as I have more time to ride than when I was younger in my 40’s. 60 next year, 296 FTP. No issues up or down but as above if your overweight that’s the issue not age related slowing down. You loose strength yes but retain your endurance. So you work on power gaining more/retaining strength.

You also should eat more protein and rest more as an older athlete

Id have not wasted time or disappointed my lad. I’d order the part asap and fix the bike. But TBH some hubs make a lot of noise, its the pawls clicking over the teeth. Id just service it and ride on. It be quicker and my son would be out riding. Its also SH and if its broke I’d fix it. Sold as seen. Or not in your case.

Id agree, its a very complex problem and its not just a case of throwing more money at the problem.

I’d certainly favour more money going to preventive measures – like a tax on sugar etc. If your a lifestyle problem, smoke, obese, then you should pay.

If we just cut missed appointments it saved a huge amount of money and waste.

I was surprised the NHS didn’t colle3ct money from foreign patients not entitled to NHS treatment. Recent experience in Canada – no insurance, no $500 or no credit card = no treatment. And that was at reception.

One thing I’m fed up with is the constant bad news stories from the BBC about the NHS. From my contact with the NHS its a wonderful system. Nothings perfect but they must be doing something right. How about a few success stories for balance?

Tacx Vortex here and I can stand on mine. Zwift, Trainer Road, Sufferfest. Has small wheel which you adjust the resistance with a test on a ap to check spin down. 900w motor so way more than I can push. Never had a slipping wheel and Ive done 100km on Zwift 90km on Sufferfest Thin Air – mega climbs for 2.5 hours. No issues at 300w FTP.

Basically roller ones are good and cost @ a third of the price of direct drive. Some direct drives are a lot more accurate about 2%.

Are direct drive better? Yes but are they for you? Depends on how deep your pockets are and will you really use that extra bit of accuracy? I suspect for the vast majority of us the answers no.

    Tacx vortex £300

    What turbo you using?

Tacx Vortex here. Works fine. I don’t seem to be running out of resistance. Do the FTP test and set weight and FTP correctly and Zwift mountain will provide a challenge.

I tried and it pushes past the plunger and oozes out of the plunger end

don’t force the plunger just let the spring reassert itself, sounds like you might have broken the rubber seal?

its a lot easier with the cartridges :-D

If you have problems getting the greese into the bearings let the air out the can that helps a lot

Had a cross threaded frame bolt in 2014 frame. SC sent a Complete new frame to the LBS within three weeks. They didn’t even have the old frame. Was still in the LBS when the new 2015 frame arrived. No quibble. Life time warranty.
