    Lakes – anywhere rideable yet?

    Yep 🙂

I just don’t like the argument that because Borrowdale is already ‘scarred’, it’s fair game to put more stuff in there. I’d say the argument is ‘don’t do anything else to this already damaged close-as-we’ve-got-to-wilderness’.

Fix the Fells continually create incredible scars across the fells with the footpaths they build, and that’s with the blessing of the National Park. That’s also a part of the problem: there’s an inconsistency with the decisions made by the park authority, Allerdale, and the County Council.

    EDIT:

Employing more local people? They seem to be the ones objecting to the development

Everyone I know in Borrowdale is behind the idea.

Thin merino socks, freezer bags, then thick merino socks. That’s the North Lakes way 😉

General Munnery (played by Nicholas Farrell) was marching into the building, being welcomed back – the implication being that Tom Dawkins (the man that sacked him) was out. Also the end tableau of Dawkins back at the scene of the original Petroflex incident, looking like a war zone, together with the sound of a blast (the accident and/or weapons fire) – both leading us to conclude the war was on. Dawkins’ portrait was also on the wall of the stairs at Number 10: I could be wrong, but I think you only get your portrait on the wall once you’re an ex-Prime Minister.

    ^ even the “North” apparently

    😀

Thanks all – I’ve had a root around their website[/url] and it’s just what I’m looking for. I’ll give them a call !

hotel on the road between keswick and honister pass,

Could be The Lodore or the Borrowdale Hotel. I’ve only ever eaten at them, never stayed – sorry.

    The Crown, in Hesket Newmarket.

    + 1 for The Crown.

    That’s certainly a big day out 😀

Alternatively, I wonder how feasible it would be carrying up from Dollywagon onto the Fairfield Horseshoe?

It’s a pretty short carry from Grisdale Tarn to the top of Fairfield.

It’s pretty much all unridable between the summit of the Pike and the end of Broad Crag (in either direction). As an ascent, the Corridor Route is also mostly carrying. Via Angle Tarn or Styhead to Esk Hause would be your best bets Sanny.

Been wondering about a route up to Whitestones for a while.

Quickest way to Whitestones (other than descending off the top of Skiddaw), is to jump the wall at Long Doors behind Dodd.

Death was not far away yesterday !

We dropped off the top last night – the first snowy descent of the winter 😀 Most of it will be gone now anyway: the sun’s been shining all day.

Thanks for the advice – does the larger 4GB SD card make much of a difference. Presumably it’s just for storing downloaded games ?

so would be fairly visible across the valley

So is the slate mine – both side of the valley are heavily scarred with old and existing mine workings.

the noise aspects of the original application were the biggest issue to me.

Have you ever seen (and heard) the trucks heading up to and down from the top quarry ? The noise and visibility of the zipwire would be minimal by comparison.

isn’t it on the site of an old slate mine

    It’s a working mine / quarry.

On a related note, is there anything of interest in Dodd Wood?

I’d probably avoid anything but the obvious fire roads on Dodd ir_bandito to be honest, unless you’re up there in the evening. Dodd’s heavily frequented by the park authority, forestry commission, RSPB, etc etc because of the nesting Ospreys.

Much shorter but lots of fun – there’s a nice mix of natural stuff and some tricky fix-the-fells steps. It’s certainly the more challenging of the three bridleways.

The more northern of the two is easier to navigate: sticks pass. The other, via brown crags, is harder to pick up on the ground. The better option would be down to wythburn church; more fun than either of the other options.

Morning Sanny. Robinson and Hindscarth are very similar descents. I’d say Hindscarth is the better – there are a few less carry-downs. The best route up is to carry up Dale Head from Honister.

As other’s have said, I’d avoid the footpath down the front of Fleetwith – it’s mostly a carry-down with a brief ride towards the bottom.

Railway line, Glenderaterra, back down Latrigg. KMB have route maps.

No sorry Ton – nature’s pretty much reclaimed most of it. The only ridable bit is after Birkett Mire over to the A66 (then you’re onto the Threlkeld / Keswick section).

What he should be doing is getting involved in that area where-ever he can, helping out at music venues, theatres (eg at the college) etc

It’s worth contacting your nearest rep theatre or touring house as there’s always paid casual work going – regular fit-ups and strikes, re-rigs etc. Often venues and techie staff are happy to train new people as they often have a low retention rate with their casual staff. It also gets his foot in the door and he’ll start to make useful / crucial contacts.

Even if he intends to specialise in mixing / designing live sound in the future, a good range of skills is vital (stage management, lighting, and sound) if he’s looking to build a career.

I’ve had a couple of battery packs die in the past, displaying the same symptoms you’ve described. Pulling the pack apart, I found water damage to the board, and it was cheaper to replace than repair.

Picture messaging might not be enabled by default Ton. If you head over to the support page on the O2 website, they have online / live support (the Chat Online box top left) – you just have to ask them to enable it. They’ll ask for your wife’s number and the password on the account as part of the conversation. It also might involve manually updating some settings depending on your phone, but they’ll usually talk you through the steps.

Very wet in and around Keswick. There’s only a few (cheeky) routes here that can stand up to the amount of rain we’ve had recently.

Certainly Seathwaite is an option if its mostly bridleway I presume its okay in the wet?

Generally speaking, there’s no real difference in the quality of paths and bridleways here, or how they well drain ! Saying that, it’s a descent that stands up to the rain (might be a bit wet just after Styhead Tarn when you’re right by the beck). Getting there though – there’s some options I’d avoid right now (Langstrath for example).

One of the most fun, long, reasonably techie descents is Esk Hause, Sty Head, and down to Seathwaite. There are various options to get you to the start which will also dictate where you go afterwards, allowing you to make it as long or short a route as you fancy. All bridleway as well, which is unusual for a good lakes descent 😉

Another one I want to do again is the horseshoe that starts off going up Catbells. I last rode it on my Heckler back in September 97 so it’s been a while!

Better in the opposite direction Sanny: Robinson, Hindscarth, Dalehead, High Spy, Maiden Moor, Catbells.

Also, is there a good off raod descent off the top of Honister Pass?

Best option is to continue up and over; to pick up the bridleway around the back of Fleetwith and down to Warnscale Bottom.

The superstar isis bbs last a long time. I’ve got 2 and they have both out lasted the skf ones they replaced. One is over 3 years old and has mainly been on a single speed

I’ve also had two superstar ISIS BBs – unfortunately, both failed within six months (the second being a warranty replacement).

http://app.strava.com/rides/21376824 this is my route from today. As you can see my sense of direction isn’t great hahaha

That’s quite a distance Mark – don’t think I would have had the energy for a lap of Whinlatter.

So has anyone ridden Gasgale Crags down to Brackenthwaite? The ridge looks interesting!

Funny you should say that – that was our route on Saturday afternoon: hike up Grisdale, over to Hopegill Head and off the end of Whiteside. The first section off the top of Hopegill head is always excellent, however there are two choice off the end of Whiteside.

The left path we’ve only tried once, about two years ago, and it was very, very stop / start (and we’ve not tried it again). One of those paths the rain’s turned into a trench, very high sided with some tight turns. The right hand path, which is the one we went to take a second look at on Saturday, starts well but the lower 50% of the descent is a steep boulder field covered in ferns and heather.

There’s only one ridable descent we’ve ever found, but it’s not marked on maps. Easy to spot if you know where to pick it up, but easy to miss if not.

The line off Grassmoor looks super steep at the top but I wonder whether it is a goer?

Grassmoor’s very similar to Whiteless – perhaps a bit more loose scree.

How did you get on scary carey ?

    parkedtiger
    Free Member

Afternoon scary_carey. Picking up after you’ve hiked back up Gasgill – the best descent off Grisedale is down the front via Sleet How. Once you’re back in Brathwaite, I’d say your choice to head up Stile End to Barrow Door and on up Causey is the right one.

One note of reassurance – the hardest section is up to Barrow Door; if you make it that far, you’ll make the rest ! Also, once you’ve joined the path coming up from Stoneycroft, keep looking to your left and you should eventually see a short cut, traversing the side of Causey and cutting out Scar Crags (if you need it).

You’ll enjoy the descent off Causey – there’s a short climb down off the summit but the rest is all ridable. After the initial technical section, take the left down towards Stoneycroft – avoid heading straight on along Rowling End as the descent off the end is mostly unridable.

Looks like Grisdale Pike, down via Sleet How. Great descent.
