mbr – from their articles I still can't work out what route(s)/way round to ride Helvellyn.

Up Keppel Cove and down Sticks Pass is a nice loop.

*Update* – The Jelly Man and I have decided to move in together. I know I know…it’s a big step so soon in our relationship, but with our shared love of cola bottles and midget gems, we think it’s the right thing to do.

As soon as my divorce comes through, we’ll book the civil ceremony and you’re all invited. Fingers crossed, we’ll soon be hearing the pitter patter of tiny jelly baby feet.

I used the north loop to get onto Lords Seat and Embleton High Common on Sunday morning – yes, it was nice and quiet. I guessed everyone was at home getting ready for the Wimbledon final 😀

Scotgate gets very busy – Braithwaite Bridges campsite is just on the other side of the A66 if you find they’re full. The annual Christian Convention is about to hit Keswick and many of the camp sites are packed for the next couple of weeks.

There’s also Lanefoot Farm between Braithwaite and Thornthwaite – they offer camping but I don’t know what the facilities are like. You can easily jump on the bridleway (marked C2C) up to Whinlatter from there.

The blue is great fun – I’ve even managed to persuade my better half to give it a go (Warning: better stay away from the blue route Friday evening – there may well be an angry lady explaining which orifice I should stick my Bombers up 8O)

It’s a great bad weather alternative and is a nice night ride. Like Grumm says, it’s more fun to start and finish in Thornthwaite, especially with the blue route open. I prefer the north loop to the south – the climb’s more interesting (apart from the fire road section perhaps).

Cheers cake eater – that is a nice site at Kippford. However, I’m popping over from North Cumbria with a gang of newbies and want to try and camp a bit closer to Mabie (if possible).

You missed a good one there Roly – here’s a few poor quality shots off my phone:

I’ve walked that section of the Cumbria Way many years ago (as a kid) but have never ridden any of those tops. It was the descent from Lingy down to Carrock Beck that was looking appealing though 🙂

Excuse the hijack – has anyone tried this loop (or something similar)around Carrock Fell (back of Blencathra):

I’ll second that David – that loop’s on my list for this summer.

There’s two great descents heading off the top of Grisedale towards Whinlatter – Hobcarton End and ‘the other one’. Both well worth the shove up (although the next time I go up, I’m planning on riding up the South Loop of the Altura trail then just jump the fence).

Current favourite is still Ullock Pike (off Skiddaw). However, I’m off to try Gasgale Gill from Coldale Hause for the first time on Sunday – should be fun.

I had my left arm pinned back together as a kid (BMX incident) and I actually find the only guaranteed relief from the arthritic pain is riding.

I think I see where you mean:

That’s a hard one to spot – I don’t recall there being any kind of cairn at all. However, I’m pretty sure there’s a massive boulder on opposite side of the coach road that might help you pick it up.

I’d be interested to hear how the bridleway rides – I’ve avoided it in the past as I assumed it’d be a bog.

CooRoo – Is this the bridleway you’re trying to pick:

As you’re coming through St John’s in the Vale, watch out for an old yellow digger in the trees on your right – the bridleway is just on the right after that (with a barrier / gate and a no access sign).

We might see you on the coach road..that’ll be our route home from Ullswater 🙂

Cheers chaps – that was one worry…picking up the top of the descent when it’s covered in cloud. I might walk it with the mutt from Threlkeld at some point (before I ride it); see what it’s like.

Can be done up and down on a trials bike (with engine

!!! I take it you mean ‘I’ve done it up and down on a trials bike’ Skolt 🙂

That’s pretty much the set up we have pedalhead – I ride at least one evening a week and four-ish hours on a Sunday morning (although I slammed on Tuesday night and am off the bike with a sprained ankle for at least the next week )

I totally agree with druidh there – the exercise is vital; we’re counting on them coming out with us riding / running as they grow up as it’s just a normal part of their family life.

Yeah – it gets a bit squishy in the woods but there are lots of fun interconnected tracks (and it’s usually quieter than spooney green lane). Nice gratuitous butt shot by the way 😀

Simon – for a nice alternate descent from Latrigg (if you need one!) – pop up to very top and follow the track around, heading Threlkeld way. Take a right just before the fence, drop into the trees, and follow your nose 😀

2nd a Prince Albert. I’ve been riding mine for about 8 weeks now – great frame and no-nonsense service from Dialled.
