You know your group Google map is linking to rides in Scotland: http://tinyurl.com/2ue3g9e 😀

When we venture out of this god forsaken place we tend to go and ride stuff like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/71958789@N00/sets/72157623770296923/show/
as its very different to what we normally ride – but we normally don't see many northerners/locals on this sort of stuff as they all seem to be juts blasting down rocky fireroads which seems pretty dull to me

It's more a case of there being so many options that you'll be hard pressed to come across a local (here in the north lakes anyway).

    Excellent pictures freeridenick.

the trail down to scales tarn and then on down scale beck looked really good (its on the list for next time)

It's superb – especially the last section of singletrack down to Scales Farm and the A66. Just watch out for the gorse 😥

Hope you had a good one Lowey – one alternative to that Sail Beck / Rigg Beck return journey…if you head up the pass on the road, duck off left at the top, up Knott Rigg and over Ard Crags; there's a great descent off the end.

Going up, either Glenridding – Keppel Cove – Lower Man, or for a longer day head (as mentioned) up the road towards Dockray, over to the Coach Road and over the Dodds. Going down, another vote for Lower Man, Raise, and Sticks Pass back to Glenridding.

Frankly, is it all going to be wealthy retired southerners and resentful locals? Is it a good place to bring up our young daughter and future child(ren)?

Keswick is a great place to bring up kids (we have two girls); good schools, low crime rate, great local community – and there's a good mix of locals and incomers (like me). It can get a bit hectic in the tourist seasons but as long as you know where to avoid and when it's fine. Like Ms Morris says if you can find somewhere you can afford then go for it. From a selfish perspective, you'll have some of the best riding in England right on your doorstep.

We looked at that main ridge from Hindscarth on Saturday – it looks nuts 😀 The bridleway is a great descent. Going in the other direction on anc's route, the descent of Dale Head to the tarn is a good one, then you could drop down through Rigghead quarry or Maiden Moor in the other direction, which has a great descent down to Hause Gate, followed by the dreaded zig-zags to Manesty 🙂

Edit – avoid Maiden Moor at 'peak times'…best after 4 pm

An evening's riding without any carrying Ms Morris – it won't feel right you know 😉

Here's a XC route from Keswick avoiding any big tops – 20-ish miles, about 4500ft of ups and downs:

Edit: apologies for the fuzzy images Ton 😳

Thanks again for the warning Gav – had a blast down there this morning. Shame if Fix The Fells ruin it.

That's coming down Ullock Pike – with Bassenthwaite below and Barf / Whinlatter in the distance.

it has a very steep loooosse bit half way down

We came down there last Saturday (after trying three times through the winter but were scuppered by the snow) – there are two tracks starting appear, running parallel. Stoney (from here) suggested a head to head race might be a fun idea 😯

Edit – I think I was slightly out Anc…Nick looks like he's on the summit of Ullock looking back, rather than at the tarn (pedant 😀 )

I thought the gate was maybe the 'border' between the footpath and the bridleway. There's a footpath comes in from Grange that follows the fence line and meets the gate. However, looking at this online OS map…

…it's a footpath all the way to the split in the track.

What do you reckon Max ?

Great for the money – very tough – quite a hard saddle but I've had no comfort issues at all.

Going up Sticks Pass from Thirlmere isn't too bad really. There's an initial steep carry for about 20 minutes then the rest is pretty ridable. Cheers for the advice on Birkside Paul.

When you pop out of the forest, sharp left and up Comb Craggs onto Birk Side, then up to Helvellyn

Paul…have you ever tried that as a descent ? It's one on my 'to do' list.

Keppel Cove is poo, just very fast and gravelly

+1 Sticks Pass is a far more interesting descent than either Keppel Cove or over to the Coach Road.

I'll vouch for that – I had a quick rip and it took 20 pedal strokes just to move a metre 😯 I can't see it catching on.

Paul – one other possible suggestion to add to your list – Dale Head down to the tarn, Rigghead quarry, Castle Crag down to Grange:

The best way onto Dale head is the question – Newlands / Robinson, or via Honister perhaps – Little Town and up the valley maybe.

Cheers paulrockliffe – would love to. However, at the moment I'm heading south for a family Easter weekend in Manc. If it falls through, I'll give you a shout 🙂

Carl Side descent is a good one by the way – doesn't last as long as Ullock unfortunatley. Begins with a long path with some nasty slate sided drainage gulleys, then you arrive at Whitestones…some mad technical bits, then a steep grassy final descent with some big bomb holes to tip you over the bars. It's a bit slippy in the wet too – last time I came down there, Stoney (off-of the forum here) overtook me and he was descending on his arse 😯

    freeridenick, this one:

Shortbread – that's Rigg Beck down to Buttermere. Next time you're nearby, try coming off the back of Causey Pike then descending the other side, so you're heading away from Buttermere….so much more fun 🙂

From the point of view in your first pic, there are also great descents off Ard Crags (to your left) and Crag Hill or Whiteless Pike (both above on your right).

Good effort Stoney – I see Michael and Ms Morris came in just over four hours…Anne 3.54 (was Roly riding ?). Not sure about YH Dave, although he did text me to say he wasn't sure he'd survive until his Sunday shifted ended at midnight !
