Descent from the top of Stake Pass into the valley has just been ‘fixed’ – it’s now a smooth, raised zigzag then you follow the beck down to the bridge. Don’t follow the bridleway on the map, sticking to the right hand side of the beck – it’s more fun to cross the bridge and follow the (unmarked) path on the left side. It’s a techie rock garden before you drop down to Stonethwaite.

Not ridden the second half of your planned route over Greenup Edge I’m afraid (keeping meaning to) – I know Lining Crag is a steep carry though.

Less interesting alternate route if you need it – Rosthwaite up to Watendlath, up by Blea Tarn, down to Thirlmere is the bridleway; the cheeky / quicker route is over High Tove. Then it’s tarmac from Dunmail Raise to Grasmere.

    No mercy Mike 😀

An impatient Golf driver narrowly avoided a head on collision over taking us on a blind bend coming up the Borrowdale Rd 😯

I saw Gav’s vid – looked like a good ride. We ended up two valleys over (Gable down to Seathwaite). You out Tuesday ?

Had my left arm / elbow pinned 25 years ago following an over ambitious attempt at a drop off on my Tomohawk. The arm never went straight after that, with various consultants advising yes take it out, no it won’t make a difference, so I just lived with it. I was never keen on loosing the use of it for another year – however, as TJ says, these days (and I guess depending on the original injury) it might be a very simple procedure.

Have fun Ms Morris – I'm in Keswick after all so won't be joining you 🙂

I would also like you to visit some of the bridleways of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales where there are natural drops, loose rocky terrain and especially the Lake District where there is some serious rocky sections that are sharp edge.

You might want to check Mr. Taylforth's location 😉

I use a 24" pipe wrench on the BB tool which never fails to move them. If you've got a vice even better, as that gives you the frame itself for purchase. Failing that, hot water (on steel frames anyway) poured onto the BB area can help to free up the BB if it's not budging.

Do the non-drive side first, anticlockwise, then the drive side clockwise. If you're not already, use a QR skewer to hold the tool in place.

Wow – that's the last section of Seldom Seen – how did you end up down there 😯

Go for Borrowdale Rascal – with your drive to and from Penrith, that'll probably work out about three, maybe three and a half hours. If you wanted to add on an extra hour, you could pop up Honister, back of Fleetwith, descent down to Warnscale, back up the pass, then carry on with the 'traditional' bash route. You could also add in the zig-zags from Hause Gate to Manesty if you fancied a quick hike with a mad descent.

Left is best – a fast run down with lots of drainage gulleys, then into the trees and off road to the sawmill. If you carry on straight, there are some fun drop offs but you're liable to run into farmer trouble.

I was using a single ply 2.25 Advantage on the rear – but it doesn't take much to tear up the sidewalls (North Lakes).

I'm not particularly for or against the idea really – however, I would have said that the massive trucks that drive up and down the grey road you can see on the far left of that image – transporting slate from the quarry on top of Fleetwith – would perhaps constitute more of an eyesore than the zipwire. It’s a very industrial environment around that whole area anyway.

There's blue rope marking the potential path of the wire at the moment – it's on the road side / over the pass, rather open fell. I suspect Mr.Weir needs the extra income to pay for his helicopter rides to the Shepherd's cafe.

Nice vid Gav; I like that you caught the spanish couple on there 😀

How about a version with music..

It's Mark Weir up Honister – the plan is for the zip to come off Fleetwith Pike and down to the top of the pass. Be interesting to see if he gets permission.

There's a place in Stair, just around the back of Catbells – never seen it personally but might be worth a call.

It's 'convention time' here at the moment so it's chocablock – camp sites especially, so it'd be worth ringing ahead to check / book. You might get lucky with a B and B as they tend to turnaround on a Friday – try:

I was just not riding the stuff the Alpine is built for

I'm the opposite Jamie – I have a Prince Albert but wish I'd gone for a Alpine. I'm in the North Lakes and I think an Alpine would be better suited to the descents around here. It's still a great bike though 😀

kezzab – I've never cleared that descent; never had the balls to have a crack at that gap half way down 😯

Even if you or I did choose to move anything around, no doubt it would all shift in the next downpour anyway ! That's one of the reasons I love riding around here – nothing stays the same for very long.

Where's the bridleway in question Kezzab ?

Morells is good – down on Lake Road, on the right after George Fisher.

It'd be such a drag to ride out there from here (Keswick), and with so many (far far better) routes between here and there, I doubt I'll ever get around to checking it out ! Wet grassy descents scare me anyway – give me good firm slate any day of the week 🙂

Think I'm gonna check out that Worm gill descent weekend after next, see if it lives up. Report/pics to follow.

Fizzer – Andy k investigated a while a go – might be worth a chat:

I think the point of Gav's post was the length of the (unbroken) downhill – with the challenge being that it had to be a bridleway. Most interesting is a different thread 😀 (although I understand from the reports that night that it was far from boring Gav !)

ParkedTiger that's going up High Spy init? Mate had a over the bars incident near that point on Sunday, fortunately he's Ok, waiting to see the footage as he had a head cam on, should be a giggle.

Yep – I didn't take the picture myself but it was pre-flood…that section's changed a lot since then eh ! Lucky your mate didn't fall to his left !

Did you hike up from Goldscope Mine (the valley between High Spy and Hindscarth) ? Never, ever, ever contemplate trying that out as a descent – we tried it a few weeks ago – it was bobbins 😡

Yep – better to be sure and there's no harm is checking is there 🙂 I'd go for Max's second option if you can squeeze another 45/60 minutes out of the day – the descent off Lower Man is nice, and it's about to attacked by Fix the Fells 😥
