the singletrackworld corporate view seems to be that helmets are not essential, therefore all the sheep on here who are desperate to be part of the horrendous clique that surrounds these people all adopt the same view. This is also how people end up riding frankly **** bikes that ignore any improvements in mountain biking equipment that have occurred since 120mm purple stems, simply because it may gain them some kudos on an internet forum.

I like stove tops – there will be little if anything to choose between the two re performance, the mokka just has a higher quality feel/look about it. Splash out and get it as it will look swish on view in the kitchen.

fire xc pro are decent tyres but they have been around for ages and things have moved on

I went from these to conti verts (f and r)

then high roller F and conti vert R

now high roller on front and advantage on back

each step has resulted in significant preformance improvements

[like brian lopes states in ‘his’ book, when u are railing a corner, you won’t notice the difference between $20 bars and $50 bars, but u will between a 420 tyre and a $50 tyre.]

is there and up and down route and if not, how will head on collisions be avoided?

[not trying to be a smart arse here – well done for building it and I will def be a regular user]

rock shox forks – I’ve tried plenty and they’ve all felt horrid compared to fox or a nice set of bombers from a few years back. RS seem to have all the bells and whistles in terms of adjustments and gimicks, then lack basic adjustments like (coil) spring pre load. I had a go on my mates yeti with pikes with an extra firm spring and they were so soft I was almost bottoming them out just riding round the car park.

I’ve tried sids, pyslos, rebas, pike and recon and thought they were all gash

oh and cotic soul as well – the one (granted only one bike ridden) I rode felt like i was sat right over the back wheel, again a very long top tube and v steep head tube. Angles just felt all wrong to me.

all down to personal taste, otherwise we’d all be riding the same bike if we all liked the same thing.

I’m not keen on inbreds – too long in the top tube and always seem to be built up with a low front end, which is good as a singlespeed as it keeps the front end down, but as a geared trail bike, not the most fun to ride. But thats just my view and many people love them.

one other thing – they usually deal with the cv that arrived in the past hour, so if you’ve not heard from them in a while, don’t assume they bare giving your job hunt any attention. Keep calling/email them with updated CVs

be aware that when they speak to you, the objective is as much to find openings as it is to find u a job.

For example, they’ll say things like “tell us about other jobs you’ve applied for to avoid duplication”, which translates as “tell us which firms are taking on so we can put other people forward”.

They’ll also want to know about the job u are leaving, so they can fill that. So be careful about giving out contact details of ‘references’.

That said, I find most of my work through agencies, some are ok and others are a waste of time.

either way – not a great day for cycling.

(and, what about all the footballers and tennis pros who have been involved in the big doping cases?? Not much seems to happen in those cases, just ‘other sports’ like cycling)

It wasn’t like this in the war you know. Spirit of the blitz, make do and mend an all that.

I blame those damn doodle bugs myself. Our harold still dives under the nearest table every time an engine cuts out.

    yes it should

I agree with TJ that Labour failed on Transport. I rememeber Prescott said all the right things on question time about providing atractive alterntives to using cars, then they did very little.

the athletes have trained hard for these games, so they should not miss it due to the village. Just go to Delhi and stop in hotels.

I don’t wear headphones on the bike as I think it’s important to be able to hear as best as possible what is going on around you. However, I fail to see how it would have avouided riding into the back of a lorry in this situation

people who drop litter just havn’t been brought up very well and judging by the ammount of it in our streets, thats quite a few people.

I think some really severe punishments should be dished out for dropping rubish on the floor, like on the spot non-lethal electric shocks, for example.

if you get on xbox live, just be prepared to have all your spare time hoovered up. They should give those things to people in hospital long term as the on-line play is completely engrossing.

I was hoping for some discusion about the opening post and instead it's a frankly pathetic squabble about saying hello to each other.

It never fails to amaze me how on STW, where you would expect everyone to be pro cycling, there is so much slagging of other cyclists and often, comments which are more pro car than pro bike.

If bike riders can't even respect each other, it's no wonder average mr car driver doesn't care about cycling or cyclists.

it amazes me how hoften I hear "I hate my job" and then in the next breath, concern about redundancy or complete dismisal of any thoughts of moving on. Generally, the longer a person has been with a firm, the greater their fear of leaving.

I've been contracting for quite a while now, so have left jobs a few times and have learnt that u should never rot away in a crap job as there are always alternatives.

    Lee?

Had a quick flick through that book and as skill manuals go, it's really good. I liked the exercise to enourage weighting and unweighting the bike by doing the same movements stood on some scales and seeing the massive difference it can make.

Good stuff – every time I go to LQ/CQ there is something new and it just gets better. There is a real sense that the MTB scene in the local area is picking up as a result of this work and also things like the brownbacks race series and singletrack weekender – that’s got to be good news for the existing food/drink outlets, skills coaches and bike shops.

Cheers to Tony Lund and everyone else involved or your efforts.

Bunnyhopping and other technical skills are essential

I suppose it is possible to mountain bike without these, just not very well.

been racing round Lee Quarry and doing quite a bit a good bit faster recently, so about time for a knock, except I did it coming out of the shower and stubbed my toe on the exercise bike in the hall, cracking one and possibly another bone in my foot according to the fracture clinic today.

Oh how I chuckled at the ironic nature of my inury as I hoped around the hall with a towel round me waist not spurting a string of expletives.
