very well said Bez [edit: previous post, not the one above, which is still fine]

is it possible we could keep this on topic rather than turning into a ‘debate’ on helmets. I’ve put ‘debate’ in ” as TJ is involved.

The death was caused by an accident (in that I think we can assume that the driver did not intend to clip him).

until people stop spouting this ^^^^ sort of drivel, general opinion amongst the motoring public will always be that causing death to a cyclist through negligent driving can be written off as an unfortunate accident.

Until UK law aligns with many European countries, where there is a presumption of guilt on the part of the driver in incidents involving a cyclist or pedestrian, we will tragically see news like this on a weekly basis. Such a law would make drivers **** scared of going anywhere near more vulnerable road users and reduce the number of incidents as described in this thread.

Unfortunately, Jeremy Clarkson wouldn’t like it, so it will never happen.

    b) there is systemic corruption in the legal system favouring drivers over cyclists.

Negligence of Person A has directly resulted in the death of Person B.

In almost every scenario this would lead to a conviction with serious consequences. Except it seems in cases where Person B is cycling, then he/she may as well be a dog that has inadvertently been allowed to run into the road.

No government will change the law because it won’t be popular with voters, most of whom drive.

After a month or so without booze I found I was mentally sharper.

    more cash.
    Feel fresh weekend mornings

Only sometimes after a long tedious week at work you may feel the need to escape. I find snorting a few crushed up codiene tablets out of the medical box and a spot of autoasphyxiation does the trick.

“How many bikes do you need?”

“I got a full suspension MTB for £200”

“you are so fit and skinny” (compared to them and not other cyclists)

    “I’ve seen this Trek….”

I never use them in Morrisons becuase:

    1. There is always a need to wait for an intervention by a staff member.

    2. I’d miss the asian lady on till 5 telling me in a jovial manner how she would never allow her son to marry a white girl.

    “Tapered head tubes
    Bolt through forks”

Once tried, you notice the front end has stiffened up making it better through rough stuff.

I seem to be against most new things until I’ve tried them and then find out they actually improve matters. I was against heart rate monitors for some time.

Although not always the case, people who are new to cycling often get the clothing wrong by dressing so they are comfortable outside the house…then boil on first climb.

I think dressing in autumn/spring can be tricky to get right as the range of conditions can vary so much during the day.

It’s like the 80’s all over again. Dave (Maggie) ruining the country and Ed (Neil) too close to the unions and hence unelectable.

Tories are encouraging panic buying even though there is no date set for a strike for two reasons:

    1. Deflects attention from tricky #camdinewithme issue (remember that?)

    2. Creates bad feeling against the unions, knowing Ed Miliband can’t say too much as he is only there because of them, hence making him look weak and compromised (which he is).

Sat in a queues for £1.49/litre fuel with the engine running?

I think our time on the planet is almost up.

    Interesting discussion here.

the incitement element aside, how far can someone express racist views before it becomes illegal and how does this compare against other hate crimes? The BNP and EDL exist within the law, despite the fact they are clearly racist.

What this guy said is clearly vile to most people (including me), but even without the racist elements, it remains vile yet I suspect he would not have been punished under law.

School ski trips – most of these seem to cost more for a child to travel by coach to stay in a YHA at a resort you’ve never heard of than for a week for an adult in Val D’Isere.

And I thought it was an issue taking kids out of school in term time for holidays? Oh, the teachers get to accompany them for free? Thats ok then.

I have a relative involved in drug trials, his view was that even drugs on the market are not 100% safe, so taking them at the trail stage is quite risky.

just to expand slightly, it keeps the drive train running smoothly, doesn’t seem to wash off easily and best of all, a quick rub of the chain with a rag and lube reapplication kept the chain clean as well, no accumulation of grime that I get from finish line red top (which to be fair, isn’t a wax baed product).

HB is the centre of the MTB universe.

Except one should always refer to it as “The Valley” in the same tone as 1960’s West Coast counter culture.

choose riding times carefully to avoid traffic.

IME Friday 3.30pm onwards and Saturday afternoons are some of the worst times to road ride.

Ok Ok, keep your wigs in place. I retract the comment about IWD. I was considering it in the context of the UK and forgetting the ‘international’ bit.

Surely all this sexism talk is just twaddle – Its economics.

I initially thought you may have a point here. But economic test fails if you apply it to a racial discrimination scenario, eg: giving certain groups discounted entry to events where attendees are predominantly from other racial groups.

Encouraging more women into cycling is a good thing, but I think it needs to be done in a manner that is consistent with equality.

    – Positive media coverage of female cycling and cyclists.
    – Classes for women and men at the same event.

Would men only events be acceptable?

We had International Women’s Day a few weeks ago. I’m not quite sure what this is for or why their isn’t an International Men’s Day.

We either have equality or we don’t.

Bunnyhop has never been the same since she was gased with methane in the dorm of the malham YHA. You don’t live in an episode of Last of the Summer Wine, it’s not real you know.

In future just stick to moving a bath down a hill with hilarious consequences.

Have u had your tea love?
