I’ve been out of the country so running really late with these, although I will carry on chronologically as despite all this I am really enjoying the exploration of techniques :)

    Enchanted

Late, but it could be said that I am both disenchanted with the theme and the outcome! Tis somewhat representative of being carted off to a National Trust house or places like Stone Henge, and all the adults being ‘Enchanted’ with the surroundings, whereas I the kid was always much more impressed with the packet of Dolly Mix from the petrol station, heathen I know!

Hello, not spoken before but I recall a little from previous threads. I used to help out at the board of CHUMS – Mental Health and Emotional Welbeing Service for Children and Young People (http://chums.uk.com) it’s worth taking a look at their site, and getting in touch with them as they do great work and may be able to offer some support and/or advice. The CEO is an amazing lady called Dawn Hewitt and if you’d like I could put you in touch.

Thanks for the replies. These are both Baby-Gs and the issue isn’t so much having the skills to change a battery, it’s more to do with the warerproofing/pressure seal etc

I live in San Pedro de Alcántara near Marbella and have pretty much tried each option with and without kids. With kids the ferry to/from Santander or Bilbao is IMHO the easiest option. Tolls from the north to the south through Spain are not expensive, perhaps €50 in total dependant on peak season or not. Avoid driving through Madrid as the roads are wide, multi-laned and quick moving. Other than that the traffic is sparse, the roads are good and the scenery is pretty, albeit take some good tunes as after a while driving through La Mancha you can easily zone out. Regarding France I’ve driven solo from St Malo through to Burgos (North of Madrid) in one stint down the West coast. Roads were great and again not that many tolls. I think, but happy to be corrected that the more costly tolls are towards the centre of France. I’ve also done this return leg with kids and that took three days and two hotel stops. Another thing to consider is that a coffee in France is about €2.50 compared to €1 in Spain, but their wine is better ;)

Thanks guys. I did an apprenticeship about 25 years ago and have been on and off the tools over the years. I’ve had the bad knees, shoulders and hernias to go with the job, but lead is such a versatile material and a pleasure to work with.

This is from a more recent job on Beel House (where Ozzy treid to kill Sharron!)

Thanks, I’m semi-retired myself from roofing that is, as here in Spain they don’t really use the same materials but I still go back to the UK from time to time to help my bro-in-law out.

Equally how the lead is fixed in place has a significant effect, it should only be fixed in the top third (following the downward angle) of the bay etc. Quite often dormer tops are fixed in place around the leading edge using nails to prevent windlift, however this effect should be achieved using a copper or stainless steel strip fixed to the timber and then with the lead brought over the front and turned under and around the strip creating a drip edge and mitigating windlift.

All of this aside though is speculative without any pictures showing how the work has been undertaken. I would suspect that it has not been carried out by a leadwork, and perhaps therefore any fabrication that would need cutting and welding has not necessarily been done correctly.

Hey, I am a lead roofer by trade. Do you have any pictures? I am assuming that the bay window top has either been installed in one piece or in multiple sections using wood core roll to separate the bays? Code 4 can be installed in up to 1.5 metre lengths dependant on bay centres of 600mm, code 5 2 metres, code 6 2.25 metres, code 7 2.5 metres and code 8 3 metres. This is to alllow for thermal movement. If the bay has been put in one section, although it may be oversized, it is unlikely to fail in the course of 1 year, as the outcome of this is typically buckling and splitting in bays that cannot move due to being oversized etc. It sounds more likely that the issue is with the silocone etc, as lead should either be cut and welded or bossed, albeit that this tends to be reserved for roll ends.

Look like Cambrians? Not really a slate..

    True, didn’t look that closely.

You should get the building inspector to have a look at that. The lead shouldn’t go under the flat roof material. As others has said felt goes up and then lead dresses over.
Does all the water go to that one outlet? There’s a lot of drained area to one small downpipe.
To answer your real question – yes to gutter to pitched roof.

This is the lead detail for the flat roof to terminate in the rain water hopper. Quite typical detail this, but there should still be a cover flashing over the top of the felt upstand, and under the slates.

Funny detail. Regarding the slate roof then yes it needs a gutter The reason this then poses an issue is that the brackets are usually fixed into the facia, which in this case is the upstanding of the flat roof. I’m not sure if there is a gap between the bottom of the facia and the flat roof or not, if not then the felt up stand should weather the facia detail. You would usually have a lead cover flashing chased into the render at that point, and it could then be fixed into the top of the facia, however this would need to be done before the slates we’re laid as they are nailed into position. I would then have guttering in the facia into a running outlet into the hopper

Have you got lots of spare money? If so then yes, alternatively perhaps it’s not necessary. FYI I usually change chain and cassette together, but have never worn a chainring to the point it needs changing (5,000km per year).

The obvious one really, ride up Tedie as far as you can get in 2.5 hrs and then spend 30mins returning, amazing ride! Get to the top (of the road) from sea level and you will find it hard to get more vertical ascent in a single climb anywhere in Europe.

It’s more for tightening than removing, reason for the impact driver is simply that’s what I use and like the quickness of hex shanks. I don’t see that there would be much of an issue using an impact driver given they make specific pozi and torx bits

As above did the old mech rub when you ride it or just in the stand.

Specialized full sus used to a proper pain for rubbing in the workstand but fine when ridden and the rear end sagged a bit

Makes sense, I hadn’t thought of that :)
