I would go for something with a direct-fit chainring so that you can eliminate the need for chainring bolts. looks neater and saves weight.
I think the only options for this are currently SRAM cranks or Middleburn.

I wonder how many will be running a £100 deore version in 5 or 6 years time.

The answer to this is probably pretty much everyone!

I think the only reason we aren’t seeing these setups on many new complete bikes is that the groupset manufacturers would rather sell traditional multi-chainring setups, as they have more components and hence they are selling more stuff. So they are keeping the price of 1×10 setups artificially high at the moment, but this can’t/won’t last forever.

It’s my dream. I can’t imagine anything more incredible than looking down on the earth from space.
If I won the lottery it’s the first thing I’d try to do.
I’m still hopeful that commercial space travel will become affordable enough within my lifetime…

Best TV show I’ve watched since Breaking Bad. Really enjoying it. Wondering how it can all get tied up nicely with only two episodes left though…

Lots of cycle commuters only commute in fair weather and get the bus/train when it’s wet. Hence don’t really need them.

I think he’s got it broadly right unfortunately. His timescales are probably a bit short (he has admitted as much in more recent interviews), but I’m sure it’s coming.
As someone said above we’re probably past the tipping point or close to it, and the world as a whole shows absolutely no signs of changing it’s ways.

Having thought about this I’m now thinking it’s not so bad. It’s inevitable really as humans only seem to learn from experience, so once we have screwed up the planet and most of us have died, we then just have to wait a few thousand years for the planet to fix itself and at that point we can start moving forward as a species again, and we won’t make the same mistakes that time because of this experience (we’ll probably make some different ones though…)

I’m a bit late on this thread, but this bike is great!

Question: could it be ordered without the adjustable dropouts? I believe Pinion do a chain tensioner which mounts directly to the gearbox, so that could be used instead of adjustable dropouts, right? I am thinking that this would save money and also weight at the rear of the bike.

PLEASE bring this to the Bespoked show in April…

Ha! Yes. Didn’t he have a small dwarf army?

Think I binned all my White Dwarfs (White Dwarves?)

Yeah I think he did, I did too.

Just checked eBay and it turns out those old mags are worth next to nothing. Good excuse to keep them 🙂

    This brings back some memories!
I cleared out my parents loft last year and found a big box of mint condition White Dwarf mags… will get round to looking through them one day which will be fun.

    @Pimpmaster_Jazz – I have a vague memory of some epic battles round at Gareth’s house… 🙂

Saw loads at the junctions around Oval tube station and more at Vauxhall bridge.
Seemed to be stopping lots of cyclists for petty non-dangerous offences, but didn’t see them stopping any HGVs….

I have found the British Gas HomeCare insurance to be excellent and great value in my opinion. That’s for a privately owned house though – I assume they have different rates for landlords.

    £100 per month combined.

2 bedroom victorian end-of-terrace. Has double glazing but lots of drafts and minimal loft insulation (hoping to improve on those soon). No cavity wall insulation of course.

Some of you are paying a fortune!!

Get a specialist damp person in to do a report on the place.
Don’t go for one of the free services that all the damp companies offer, they are only trying to sell you stuff. Find an independent company who only do surveys and don’t actually have any other services to sell, that way you can be sure of an unbiased opinion.
Will cost you about £150 or so, which is nothing when buying a house.

For what it’s worth my house was far far worse than your pics, and did not cost that much to sort out. But of course it depends on what the route of your problems is… hence the need for a professional investigation.

That 4 year fix is good for price certainty if that’s important to you, but isn’t a cheap deal. I looked at fixing a couple of weeks ago when the current round of shafting started and it looked unlikely to save me anything over the period of the fix.

I just looked into this deal. I am currently on the British Gas Standard tariff for both gas and electricity, and this deal is cheaper than that even before the 10% rise that British Gas are doing next month. Hence it seems like a pretty great deal to me…

I agree that it’s getting way too formulaic and hence a bit boring to watch.

I loved that house though – I would literally kill to live in that location, it would be perfect for me.

Nice house for an ex-serviceman to be able to afford – did they say how he financed it? (I missed the beginning).

just overboard with celotex backed board if you want clean and fast solution

I gotta say this is pretty tempting, as I am guessing that taking down the old ceiling will be more of a pain than it seems…

However I think I’ll have to do the proper job as I don’t want to lose any more room height, and I’m already losing about 40mm by laying a new floor.

Thanks again for all the input everyone.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

Sounds like no-one is bothered about installing a vapour barrier then…?

    packer
    Free Member

It’s just occurred to me – is it unnecessary to use a vapour barrier if you have adequate ventilation space between the insulation boards and the roof tiles?
if so is this true even in a bathroom (which will of course have a lot of vapour)?

    packer

Thanks for the info footflaps. So does the silver foil and tape on those boards act as a vapour barrier? Or do you need a vapour barrier in addition to that?

there aren’t any joists, just the rafters

    – correct.

So the ceiling is sloping within the bathroom?

    – yes, and it slopes down to under 6 foot high on one side, so not possible to put up a flat false ceiling (at least not over the whole room anyway, maybe half of it at most.

@Rubber_Buccaneer – what did you do about the vapour barrier issue in your case?

Anyone know where abouts in Camden this house is?

That seemed to go remarkably smoothly I though given the potential it had to go wrong.
Liked the house and the people this episode.
Think it was £1.3m all in in the end – a “bargain” for that house in that area. They must have at least doubled their money.

Is it me or are there only 9 cogs on that Trickstuff cassette?

    I was thinking that…
There’s definitely 10 in this image though:

emailed the distributors about that trickstuff cassette:

At the moment there is no pricing available although we expect to have this within the next week.
There have been 100 produced so far and they will start to ship in the next 3-4 weeks. I would expect it to be around £80-£90.

That sounds very cheap given that the middle section of the cassette is titanium… hope it’s correct though.

Major over-reaction from the OP. I bet 5 years from now you won’t have even seen one of them out on the trails. Chill out.

In my experience once you drop below walking pace the bike is really not an efficient way to get up hills.

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one.

How long is the headtube on the frame? I’d imagine it’s a fairly standard length.
Apart from that the height of the front will be determined by your forks, stem and bars, not the frame.

but the comments above suggest people are running them with 30 & 32t chainrings. climbing in 30-40 must be considerably less than walking pace.

That’s still not as low as the lowest two gears on a “traditional” 3×9 MTB setup.

If you are on a steep technical climb then riding at “less than walking pace” is still much more efficient/easier than walking.

I’ve used my lowest gear (22×34) numerous times when riding in Wales.

Have you tried a very small amount of copperslip on the back of the pads? Worked for me.

Nothing has been tweaked in terms of geometry. My local frame builder and I spent considerable time making sure nothing was changed with these ‘mods’.

Clearly not the case. look at where everyone elses rear axle is – i.e. exactly in line with the chainstay.
Yours is clearly approx 15mm above where it would originally have been. Hence the slack looking angles.

The two riders on bigger wheels who were most likely to make an impact ended up both crashing in the first corner.
(I’d put that down to bad luck rather than wheel size)

I would bet that they are on at least 20 times more…

When did that pic appear on Team Rumours? Been there since early Dec – makes a mockery of Trek’s suggestion that they knew nothing until a week ago

Very good point. I think you are right, it’s been around a while.

2013 should be a great year for DH racing

    Definitely.

I think the Gwin move is great news for fans – hopefully the change will unsettle him a bit and he won’t be so dominant this season.

The fantasy downhill is gonna be a real lottery that’s for sure…

Seems a little rough of Gwin to bail out on Trek so late in the day, but I’m sure there is more to the story than we have heard already.
Whatever Gwin has done the press release from Martin Whiteley throwing his toys out of the pram comes across as petty and bitter and serves no purpose whatsoever, other than to make Whiteley look incredibly unprofessional.
I always thought he came across badly in the videos and bet he was a pain in the arse to have as a manager… maybe he was the reason Gwin left (don’t think it would have been money – Trek would have matched any Specialized offer surely).
