We use this broker – https://www.landc.co.uk/
Recommended on Money Saving Expert. Don’t charge anything to the buyer and got us a good deal.

I’ve used them three times now – brilliant. Wouldn’t do it any other way.

Having insulated under the floor then 10% is a huge underestimate if you already have a well-insulated roof, cavity wall insulation and reasonable glazing/doors.

I suspect you are right. Sounds like a number they just pulled out of thin air.

I’ve decided I’m not going to do it unless I can get some insulation of some sort in under the heating system.

The guy who plays Jon Snow is signed up to play him until the end of season 7. He’ll be in it in one way or another. My money is on the red witch bringing him back from the dead.

Price up getting the floor dug out – it’ll only be this easy once

This is true. Definitely going to get quotes for all options.

    Thanks for the info all.

Much garden? Wet underfloor works well with ground source heat pumps.

No, not a lot. I’d expect this requires quite a bit of land doesn’t it?

They also said that about 10% of the heat goes down into the uninsulated floor as opposed up into the room.

That doesn’t sound too bad. And surely any insulation at all would help – might be able to do 30-50mm of insulation underneath a 20mm low profile system if I’m lucky.

With no insulation below to slow the transfer of heat in that direction you’re basically trying to heat the ground. I’m pretty sure that with an uninsulated slab you’d be better off using radiators to heat the air in room.

I will put some more research into this, but I fear you might be right…

    Any talk of prices yet??

Yeah I have seen some of those wood effect ones – they are very realistic.
I’d be looking for dark grey frames though I think.

I wonder why Zerode did not continue with the high pivot suspension setup

He covers that in the video interview.

    Good thread…
Is there any point painting the floor if you intend to cover it with carpet tiles?
And are carpet tiles better than those interlocking rubber floor tiles?

Speakers in the ceiling in pretty much every room would be my top priority.

Thanks for the replies all – very helpful.

The low profile overfloor stuff looks like the solution if I decide not to dig up the existing floors.
I guess the question is how efficient is it when used on top of an uninsulated concrete floor block. I suppose that some of the heat gets lost into the ground underneath the block… but I can’t imagine it’s that much as it would have to travel through the block first, and the path of least resistance is surely into the room above so most of it’s going to go that way I would think.
I have no idea what I am talking about really though – might be time to talk to some of these companies.

Thinking about this, I may end up excavating the existing floors anyway.
I will want to add insulation to the floor regardless of the heating system, and I’m not sure I would want to lose even 75mm of height – the associated hassle that would cause would probably make me wish I had just bit the bullet and done the full job from the start.

The entire kit cost about £1100 for a 6 pipe system

Wow – that seems much cheaper than I was expecting.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Hmm…
I had not expected it to be anywhere near as much as 150-200mm additional floor height.
That could be the deal breaker.
A major excavation project like that would definitely not be worth the hassle/expense.

Shame as I really really wanted to avoid radiators…

What floor construction? Solid or timber suspended?

    Solid floor

That will take days to come through, and i don’t have time to talk to multiple companies today. Expect I can get a good idea from here by the end of the day.

Bump for the lunchtime crowd, and an additional question: how much room height am I likely to lose by installing this?

As far as city commuting goes, you rarely get above 16 mph due to traffic and traffic lights. And most of your effort is the repeated need to accelerate from a standstill, so I think these are really well suited to that.

    Giro works best for me.

Yes the springs are all the way out of the holes. The arms nearly come off – it’s like something at the bottom of the arms is catching on something at the top of the posts.

No flats on these ones unfortunately…

Doesn’t look like it, but it’s hard to be sure since the stud is down inside the brake arm.

The brake post is supposed to be a perfectly straight tube, right? But if it was then I don’t see how the brake could get stuck on it, so maybe you are right and the post is deformed in some way… But then it’s odd that both sides are behaving exactly the same.

I actually thought the guy came across as quite nice. Obviously he has a fairly massive OCD problem but nobody’s perfect!

House was not my style but I thought it was amazing. He and the designer pulled off what they were trying to achieve perfectly, and the interior was much nicer than I expected it to be in the end.

I agree that these “money no object” builds are getting a bit boring to watch though… so looking forward to the next one.

Who has a two hour sale??!

    Annoyed I missed this!

I don’t mind an hour on a train as long as I am seated and the connections at either end are not bad.
I would see it as a great time to myself to do some reading/listening.
Currently I live in London and my commute is an hour (either cycling or train+walk).

    Thanks for the info.

but a 10 min cycle ride is quite a big radius

Yeah, just looking at the map I am guessing you could live in areas on the outskirts of town such as Trumpington, Church End or Teversham and cycle to the station pretty quickly…?

Also consider just north of Cambridge

Sounds sensible, but I’m only looking at the south side of cambridge, for other reasons (closer to other family etc).

    packer

Thanks. Getting a seat each way is my main concern I guess.

The train journey from the main cambridge station apparently take 52 minutes, and my work is 10 mins from the station. So in theory if I lived near to cambridge station i could get to work in just over an hour, which is fine for me.
I know I’d be at the mercy of the rail operators, but that’s unavoidable.

Don’t have to buy it outright – use the 200k as the deposit and get a BTL mortgage.

    packer

I’m no expert but if I was you I would also be looking at a BTL property. In an area with high rents and where the price of property is likely to go up a lot in the long term – i.e. London.
I’d buy a flat somewhere along the proposed route for the Bakerloo line tube extension in SE london – if/when that opens (10-15 years time) you will be laughing even with capital gains tax.

Creation Watches are based in Singapore I think. They deliver to the UK very quickly though.

The Japanese version has Japan written on the dial, and is supposedly made in Japan (I say supposedly because apparently “made in japan” actually means something like “there was a Japanese citizen present within a mile of the factory at which this was made, which was not in Japan”).

Whats the largest/smallest diameters you would consider? And do you mind quartz or does it have to be mechanical?

Not sure I’m buying it though – could have a brazed in reinforcing ring like bottle bosses on downtubes have.
