XT is worth £12 more in my opinion.

Do the belts stretch at all and end up ruining your magic ratio?

    Charge Duster?
    Tange Prestige tubing.
Current model is chunky looking and next years in incredibly skinny – take your pick.

Living on your own in london is very expensive when you consider all the bills as well as rent. House share is definitely the way to go. Search on moveflat or gumtree. Anywhere near a decent rail line to get out of town for riding.

I don't think this would be considered a long travel hardtail. Looks like it has 120mm forks on it.

I read on road.cc that the Alfine is expected to weigh approx 1590g. I guess that's just for the hub itself.
I believe a Rohloff hub weights approx 1700g on it's own, plus you have the weight of the shift-box thing on the side. Don't know what that weight but it looks pretty hefty.

I don't think the price can really be ignored as the Rohloff is basically twice the price of the Alfine.
If I try to ignore price I think I'd personally still go for the Alfine based on weight and rear ratios.
Unless it was for an expedition bike or something as I said.

I would go Alfine as it's cheaper, lighter, has a trigger shifter, and it's gear ratios are closer together.
Only reason I would go Rohloff would be if I was doing an expedition and needed guaranteed bombproof-ness.

P.S. Alfine shifters are available in back as well as silver

Or put on a bash ring instead of the outer ring.

    @cynic-al
Do you mean at the end of the scheme they asked you to buy it for 5%+vat of the original cost of the bike? So assuming it cost £1000, you bought it for ~£60 at the end?

Yeah, I realise those are 'the rules', but I've yet to hear of a single person who has not been given the bike at the end of the period. Has anyone here had to buy theirs at the end?

    Thanks for the reply.
I already have most of the other parts though so would really only want the frame and forks.

I bet shimano would have given him a tour of the factory. How could any of their "secrets" possibly have been compromised by filming a few shots of people working? It's not like they're making space shuttles in there is it?!

I would get a second hand of refurbished Nikon D40. Can be had for just over £200 these days. You won't regret it.

LordOnOne – where did you hear about the Alfine 11-speed being delayed?

What I meant was, are they still doing IS mount calipers? The only pics so far are post mount.

Wonder if they are still doing dual control levers?
    and IS mount brake calipers?

Did the seller put their phone number in the ad? If so do a search on gumtree for his phone number and see what else he is selling. If He's selling more than one bike then chances are they're stolen.

What sort of price are train tickets into the center of london from these areas?
I'm thinking monthly or annual tickets for commuters.

Should make for a good programme – I'll be watching. I have no doubt they will finish the race, but I don't think they will beat the record.

I would imagine that manufacturers who currently make Alfine 8 equipped MTBs would also do Alfine 11 versions next year. I'm thinking of Genesis and Charge.

Original reports said approx 100g lighter than the 8 speed version.

That bakery will be out of business within 12 months of the new Waitrose opening on the same street.
Shame to see a local shop go but it's completely the fault of the owner.

That Big Hit officially looks RAD. Must have been a complete nightmare to do around the welds, no?

    Good job!

Another alternative would be to use an actual roller like the ones on MRP and Blackspire chain devices. They are available seperately as spares from CRC…

    Nice work!
Nylon washers would be lighter and would make less noise if the chain did rub on them.

Great event, shame about the rain though.

I have one complaint though: £5 for a rather small burger – WTF???! Get rid of the fancy rip-off food and get the previous food vans back please.

Go and watch all five series of The Wire immediately!!
Best thing I've ever seen on TV I think. I'm trying to forget it as quickly as possible so I can go back and watch it all again… :)

The Uno chainrings are available in two widths, for singlespeed chains and nine speed chains. If you have the thicker one then it won't work very well with a nine speed chain.
