An informed and emphatic vote for the Whippet here. I have run one SS (so can’t comment on front mech, etc) for over 6 months now and i LOVE it. If you like a long-n-low position/cockpit and you’re happy with the fairly steep head angle i would do it. Despite the angle, with SID RLTs up-front, it has not let me down on descents yet.

Only downside is it creaks to buggery. Every component/frame interface seems to emit noise. Not sure if it stops or i get used to it but after an hour or so of riding it seems to ease up. BB was a culprit but i have dismantled a couple of times and all seems OK + has got a little better over time. On One have reassured me that if any frame damage does develop the warranty will cover it. I just need to schedule a proper once-over in a year or so.

The creaking is really a small compromise when considered alongside the number of grins it has delivered so far. It’s really nimble and acceleration is amazing. It regularly gets picked over my 3yr old much loved P7 and the full-sus that cost 3 x the Whippet!

DON’T GO LAYBACK I-BEAM. My layback snapped a couple of weeks after buying it. Snap was in the cast clamping area at the top. V poor design IMO. The inline ones may be better. I have photo’s of the snapped post if you’re interested?

Have a look at a pair of Audioengine active speakers paired with an Apple Airport Express. Just plug the speakers into the Airport and control via iPhone/iPod Touch/etc. I have the Audioengine A2s (bigger sizes are available) and (i know this sounds like a cliché but) they really do sound like hi-fi. A lot cheaper than the Zeppelin/s. I’ve borrowed a Zeppelin and it was OK, just OK.

Don’t forget the Whippet – simply an Inbred made of carbon.

Message put up on the Enduro1 site today:

“Right, have just got back from the dean at 11.59am Wednesday the 25th. It has taken me 2 days to collapse the course in the crapiest weather and I will now be going through the timings to get them out by tomorrow. I know it states Wednesday at the latest but I did not count on two full days taking down so my apologies. Great to see you all and glad you had a good time!”

If i’d known (and wasn’t so knackered) i would have stayed back and helped him out!

Excellent day. Well done & thanks to Enduro1 for organising an excellent, friendly, chilled out event. One spill for me on Stage 1 but otherwise just lots of slipping about and a little bit of mincing. Still can’t believe how lucky we were with the weather. Roll on next round…

    (Raced as 110 BTW)

But probably with a 100mm SID front end

Excellent choice. I have exact same.

Loving mine. Especially the long, low geo’ and quick acceleration. Only downside is it creaks at all component interfaces (BB, headset, post). You get used to it after a while! To be fair to On One i haven’t worked through all options to eliminate the creaks yet.

20″ frame? Looks more like 20″ wheels! The more i look at that photo the more it looks like a really tiny bike.

BBB do a nice long piece of thick rubbery tape you can stick to the underside of downtube. Zip tie a chopped up innertube round the chainstay. Job done.

I bought these 3 months ago and have been good as gold so far. (NB. they’re 9mm QR)

Smack-bang on budget + you get very well regarded skewers (+ free rotors at the moment!) thrown in. Typically, the Pro2s don’t come with skewers.

Not sure duct tape will do much for longer than a few minutes??

I have been using the plastic Shimano BB in my Whippet for about 3 months now. It’s beautifully smooth but…the drive side shell is looser than the other in the frame. When dismantled the loose shell binds with the crank spindle where it flares a little near the joint with the spider, as opposed to staying put in the frame cup. This doesn’t cause any pressing issue (except a bit of creaking) but i am a bit concerned re this moving of the shell in the frame cups damaging the frame over time as the BB moves about slightly.

I have discussed this with On One and, as my only real issue currently is some creaking, they have just reassured me the frame is warrantied for 2 years. Seems fair enough as long as i’m not replacing BBs every few months.

Very nice Mr Mills, you must be very proud :) A little ostentatious for myself though. I own the raw, stealthy variety.

PS. Deffo same geo as Inbred – just checked On one site.

On One Whippet? IIRC the geometry is EXACTLY the same as an Inbred. I have been riding one for 2-3 months set up as SS and am loving it. Frame = £300. Lightness of carbon seems perfectly suited to SS ideals.

    Photo?

I gave up on DMR tugs because the ‘guide bit’ that fits in the dropout limited the adjustability too much with my On One Whippet frame. Chain was always <one link too much or too short. Had to get some alternatives, but even had to Dremel a bit off them so they’d fit. Have you tried them inside and outside the dropouts?

‘”New bike” sounds like a perfectly reasonable explanation. You do the same things you’ve done for years but a new bike can respond very differently, and with consequence.

    Rich.

PS. Broke both arms 18 months ago (first ride on new bike)

Very much agree re Man On Wire. Excellent.

Touching The Void is excellent also. It’s more like a faithful dramatisation maybe…but very good.

Attack. Attack. Attack. Use momentum, generated well in advance, to get you up the ups. Get out the saddle in plenty of time to get the right pace to carry up the climbs.

Wide bars is a good tip. I couldn’t imagine yanking little diddy xc bars all day.

I know 2 people who have had replacement frames due to excessive wear in the bb shell……

    keep this in mind

Hi CIS. Are you referring to Whippet frames specifically?

BB dismantled , liberally re-greased, reassembled and ridden. Noise is just as bad as ever. Noticed drive-side shell is far from a snug fit, easily pops in/out and likes mating with the crank spindle more than the frame cups. FSA alternative ordered from On One as they expressly recommend it for the Whippet (i’ll need it eventually regardless). Fingers crossed. :?
