I use "the Captain" ones and have both the 2.0 and 2.2 ones on different bikes. I find the levels of grip to be very good and use them all year round. I have the sworks 2bliss ones and run the tubelessly.

did this in the delivery suite last week.

I defie anyone (who acctual cares about there ofspring) to not cry at this point.

I almost cried last night watching 'one Born Every Minute' too – it brought back memories of being in a Special Care Unit for a week with the girls last summer.

I did to this as it also brough back memories of being in that very unit ( though strangly it doesn't effect me when i go in for work).

    baby giraffes can do it

Yeah, so can wildebeest – something like 10 seconds after birth. But then again, they have lions to contend with.
Thats because they have tiny brains and therfore can be born later in their development.

probably been said already, but why don't people actually say something at the time rather venting from behind a keyboard?

I tried to call him back but he carried on riding as he shouted 'it's a shared use path'. I would happily have discussed it with him at the time. It might not be against the law but even on a bridleway a bike has to give way to horse/walker and the horse to the walker.

    I want an XC90

We have just got one of these and with the bike rack you could easily get 5 people and there bikes in/on the car and still have room for luggage.

hampshire cc have done something similarhere

i'm assuming it's unfinsihed seeing as the digger is parked blocking the BW but it was barely ridable last night; imagine 4 inch deep uncompacted chalk rubble. it was a bit muddy/ churned up before but it didn't need this!

Be intreasting to see how long that last then as that is very heavely used bit of track being the SDW and all.
I take you ride around this area then Thomthumb?

    Are these the sintered ones?

I found them to be slightly thicker than the standard pads on both the juicy ones and my XT ones. I ended up filling a bit off to get the clearance.

I like your last comment Mike (@12:15)
It is unfortunate that as something becomes more comman then it stops being new(s)such as people dieing in car chrashes. The was a 14 year old cyclist killed by in a RTA this weekend but it only made the local paper as a sub story compared to the main story of someone threating people with a knife.

The sound mirrors have always impressed me. They pre-date radar and were desgined to litsen out for enemy aircraft and were built in 1928-30 see here for more details.

Hospital doctors theoretically are not allowed to wear rings on fingers for hygene reasons…. not sure if it applies to GP's too though.

This doesn't apply to a "plian weddign band" though.

I am guessing those that critisise pearents from doing it don't have kids. Small children don't understand waiting for something and if you put something they like in the trolly and they decied they want it they don't understand being told that they have to wait 10/20 mins as to them thats for ever. I used to do it with mine when they were smaller and my wife has done it with bottled water when she was pregnant and feeliing faint.

I just lower the cruise to 50 and carry on relaxing when traveling through them. I would like to see more of them on 30mph roads as on some of them in soton people do closer to 60 and jam on the brakes for the fixed ones which is just as bad as the speeding in the first place.

Lots of excellent advice to which I would add, get yourself one of those reflecors-on-a-stick. They stick out about a foot to the right of your bike. Make you look a bit daft but really do work. When I had one on my commuter it made a massive difference to my perceived size – cars would skirt waaaaay round me and stopped overtaking dangerously.

No-one wants their paintwork scratched. I've had a quick google but can't find any for sale – Halfords

If really want drivers to leave you room then get a trailer as they tend to drive on the other side of the road from it as it a fair bit wider than a bike. It may slow you down a bit though

I use Specalized 'The Captian' sworks 2bliss tyres tublessly all year round. The roll fast enough and also work well in mud and even snow.
I have the 2.2 on my FS and the 2.0 on the HT plus they only cost £22 each.

Seatbelt warning bleep thingy!!! It annoys the hell out of me.

    Put your belt on?

Mine stops if im just moving the car but they are part of the saftey features and help get the cars there ncap rating.

If there is no wind then its not much difference but as soon as there is the drag of the trailer is noticable (even with out the kid in) That said i find mine better than the seat as is only drag on th ebike rather than the extra weight up high which became noticeable as she got bigger. I have yet to find anything i can't climb with it on the back though this is why i have a triple on my road bike. You will just have to get used to going slower and taking longer to stop.

    owenfackrell

IF i ride my mtb to work instead of the road bike my average drops from 17-18mph to 13-14mph this is from both the knoblies and the riding postion/wind resistance. Mind you if i take my daughter in the trailer then ther is still the same difference between the 2 but the speeds are even lower. If you want to do some really good resistance training then get a trailer to tow behind you you can really feel it plus you can't get out of the saddle to do the climbs.

i can say that as mine wasn't a VW engine, they are know for the lumpy way the deliver power

Not any more mate. That was the old VW diesels, new ones are much better.

It was the older 1.9 i ment.

The whole point of hte FQ item was to show how poor the car was off boost as it had been total desgined around the turbo.

    Harmitans – Member
The FQ400 example is not turbo lag either, it's due to the engine being below the boost threshold and being unable to spool the turbo.

Isn't that what turbo lag is? ie waiting for the turbo which is laging behind the engine. It can happen when you change gear and drop out of the turbo range or if you are off boost.

We found the parcel shelf an excelent baby changing table for the times (and they will be plenty) that you have to stop and the only services are the basic ones.

    owenfackrell

If you want to see turbo lag then top gear did a test of the EVO FQ400 againts a fiat diesel car both had to accelerate from 30 mph in 5th the fiat left the Evo for dead and it only just caught up when they got to the end of the straight.

Having until recently owned a 1.9 dci and a 2.0 petrol i can say that as mine wasn't a VW engine, they are know for the lumpy way the deliver power, that the turbo started to wind up at 1200rpm and felt smooth with very little turbo lag where as the petrol just doesn't wind up the smae way until you hit 2500rpm+. For fast driving i would pick th epetrol every day but for relaxed city/motorway driving i would have a diesel for its lazy nature as well as the better fuel economy. The best i have seen in the petrol is 40mpg verse 55 in the diesel and that car wieghed over half a tonne heavier.

Done it to the south of france and it does depend on the baby but ours were easy. A quick word of warning if yo find that yours can only tollerate one type of wipe then take 3 times as many as you think you will nedd as you may not be able to find them. This goes for other stuff to hence why you end up with so much crap when going on holiday with a small baby.

Don't speak to her, just pick her up and put her back in her own bed, be persistant and don't give in or lose your rag.

+1 from me as well. This also works when they get up to early in the morning or wont go to bed in the evening.

Conti ultra Gatorskins here. The front one has done 5000 odd miles while the rear was changed at around the 400 mile mark. I use mine for commuting as well and they are coping very well with the short offroad section i have to use.

Not long fitted some to my second bike for the very reasons you are think about it for. I found it easy to do and have been up for 2 months now with only needing pumping back up at the begining. I did use a compressor to inflate them and tubless ready tyres.

    The ST170 specs are:
    0-60 7.9s
    BHP 170
    Torque 196Nm
    Max speed 134
    MPG 31

They don't do a 2.0 diesel in that shape (at least according to parkers) and the 1.8 TDCi specs are:
    0-60 10.3
    BHP 115
    Torque 250Nm
    Max speed 122
    MPG 49

my daughter will be 16 in a few weeks. a 21 year old sniffing around her would get a slap. it seems pretty lame to me, like you can't pull anyone your own age so you go for the school kids?

So the fact that we have now been together for 13 years have 2 kids married etc means tha just because she was 16 years old then she wasn't able to decied that she like some one only 5 years loder than her.

There are plenty of people on here that go 'coor look at her i wouldn't mind a bit of that' when the age gap is so much larger.

Glad to see that so many think that they know what is best for there kids with out even consulting them.

And yes i have 2 daughters and when they get old enough to engage in sexual relations ships i would rather that they did it with the person that they wanted to rather than the person i thought good enough.

When i met my wife she had not long turned 16 i was 21 so was that wrong by STW mob status? BTW we are now 33/27 and have been married for almost 8 years. 15/16/17 year old females are sexual active normall with people around their own age but some times with those older than that. I know people that have been investigated for it but have been let off as they met the person in a night club that had strict over 18 policy. If young people can fool person asking for id then how does an normal person stand a chance. I would comment on the cyclist but don't know enough of the facts.

Diesels seem faster when you habitually drive in the wrong gear, or cannot be arsed to change gear

That is what i have found a diesel makes you a lazy driver (leman cars the exception) and if you couple that to an auto then you get even lazier :)

Fair enough. I find it good if a little high reving when on th emotorway but dam good fun on the back roads and find that its pefectly happy around town, even though the ride is a little harsh for that, well compared to the xc90 it is.

coffeeking – Member Ah, ok, yes, well they will accelerate, just not at a rate I'd consider more rapid than my 90hp diesel. Yup, they were the F7R, as we were comparing them against the 1.6s to see if they were worth the extra cost/insurance etc, we concluded not for her usage though it's obviously more torquey/powerful than the 1.6. But don't worry, it was a humorous willy-waving, not meant to be taken too seriously!

i din't say it would do it quickly ;) you need to drop it to second for that. We looked at both and decied that the difference in running costs wasn't large enough to concern us and went for the best example we found.

I take it then you have driven both of my cars and that you can happly driv eit in 5 at 30 from which speed it will pull?

Not your car specifically, but at least 4 of the same model, yes, when test-driving them for my other half. I'm not sure what happened to the latter half of your sentence but it makes no sense to me, sorry.

What the other part means is that you can dirve along in a high gear ie 5 a@ 30mph and the car will still happily accelerate.
Are you sure that they were the F7R engine ones?

We have a petrol car that is remarkable like a diesel in the lazy way you can drive it with low down grunt (torque) which is down to good engine design. The car is a Renault megane 2.0 16v coupe (the origanl one) which has the same engine as the clio williams.

You're having a giraffe I've got more torque on my head bolts

<sorry, slipped into petrolhead mode there>

One of the car programs (think it might have been the one on channel 4) used to do a exposed to danger test with the cars. This was based on the length of time it took to overtake a lorry doing 56mph. I always thought this was a good test.

We have used a mamas and papas travel system for our first 2 and will for the next as well. The buggy part folds down small enough that it doesn't take up a huge amount of boot room and would also fit in the clio's boot htat we had at the time. As above when venturing on to unsfaced paths etc i just used a back carrier and a baby bojon when they were really little.
My sister in law had a montain buggy 3 wheeler and she said that she wished she hadn't bought it as it was hard to monever in town as its so long and it take sup a lot of room when folded.
