I think it’ll be the worst winter in ages for the Chilterns mud. The surface only dried out in early September, so it can’t be particularly dry underneath.

I lost two KOMs to a bloke who rode 3 miles in total the other day. Does it bother me? Does it balls. He looks pretty damn fast and if I’m nearly as fast at the end of a 25 mile ride, then that’s pretty good.

Plus, it gives me a nice challenge finding those extra seconds next time. It’s all good fun

I can think of no reason, yet, to change my 2004 Bomber MX Pros. They just work, and keep working.

8000 swiss francs EACH plus an insistence that he pays out for full page ads in a number of European newspapers (probably a lot more than 8000 francs?). And of course if costs get awarded against him, it gets much bigger.

I think they’ve underestimated people’s feelings here, as evidenced by the success so far of the Kimmage defence fund:

I think it’s very easy to be wise from a distance with plenty of time to think about the video.

The cyclist himself commented on the discussion on the video:

The white lines are 4m long with a 2m gap. He pulls out when I’m about 12m away and doing 20mph+.

I was braking and, to avoid hitting the back of him because he didn’t accelerate, had to? go down the blind side because there were oncoming cars on the offside.

Seems fair enough to me. It’s a lot of speed to scrub in not a lot of time, on road brakes, perhaps not in the best body position to stop immediately.

DezB – that looks a bargain, better than mine. My video was in awful light, mind, so perhaps I should try it in sunshine.

I completely agree, BristolPablo. It was very generic, and seemed very dull. Those magazines pop up every few years.

I do worry that my cheapy, if anything happened, might end up with a copper muttering “lack of evidence mate, can’t read the plate”, but it’s better than nothing.

Fourbanger – is that referring to the white van pull-out? If so, it wasn’t clear to overtake, the driver pulled out VERY late, and it seemed to me the cyclist had to dive for the one available gap (and was slowing down)

They seem pretty well sealed to me. The end cap has a rubber seal, the button is soft rubber and flush, the lens cover seems tight to the body. I wouldn’t take it swimming but I reckon it’d be fine in a decent shower.

I will say that my £30 cheapy isn’t so good at catching number plates. Not like some of the ones on here.

I’ve only put up one video, which isn’t too horrible anyway, just a couple of lemming-like drivers trying to have head on crashes (one with a digger) so they can get to the back of a long queue quicker.

    This is it: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221087869936?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

And for what it’s worth, here’s my slightly crappy video. The first and third overtakes are the ones… but you can’t really tell that the oncoming car for the first was standing on its brakes and leaning on the horn, and that the digger had to move a bit gutter-wards. I mostly just wanted to see how it looked on YouTube. Might get a better camera but it’s at least something you can deter an angry road-rager with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz_7LQYk3wc

This one from that playlist is a doozy. The mouth breather driving the van managed to get himself both driving convictions and a caution for assault

Just found this… “cyclingmikey” has a playlist of videos which have resulted in “convictions or consequences”:

A lot of people in London send clips to “Roadsafe”, and the police (I presume) often send the registered keeper a warning letter.

    That’s better than nothing.

This hit and run in california, I believe, resulted in an eventual conviction after being picked up by the news

His defence fund is now over $20k. Nice to chip in a bit… Numbers count as much as cash i think

EDIT: any cheap gps devices available that run Strava? don’t want to shell out for a garmin

Yes. I just bought a Navin gps logger on ebay for £17. It records GPX files which Strava can import.

Actually my iphone has been pretty accurate, I think. Reasonable enough to give a good idea of improvement and corroborate that with what my legs are telling me. But now I’m using a cheap GPS logger which seems better still.

Cheap headcams from Ebay are worth looking into. I picked up one for about £30. The only problem is it’s hard to pick out number plates on moving cars, but here’s a sample:

Strava confessions: Until yesterday, I owned pretty much the whole set of climbs off the Warren in Caversham. Gravel Hill, Sandy Hill, Mechanical Hill, Jackson’s Lane. And then someone nicked my KOM on Mechanical Hill, the day before the rain came. I’m considering an appeal to the CAS.

But I could give up any time.

Because it’s still going on? Because they’re suing him for saying so?

You can call Strava racing if you like but for me its a cop-out & not even remotely like the real thing.

It’s not trying to be what you call “the real thing”. Who are these people you say are treating it that way? It’s a bit of harmless fun, friendly competition, and a great motivator.

I didn’t get out. Tomorrow the singlespeed is emerging from the back of the shed, along with the crud catchers.

I used to dismiss him as bitter and twisted. But the thing is, I was wrong to do so, and he was right to make this his life’s work. Cycling and sport in general needs people like Kimmage, because it’s clear that the interests of those at the top have not been to fix key problems.

Have also put a bit into the defence fund: http://nyvelocity.com/content/features/2012/paul-kimmage-defense-fund. Just a small amount really but I think it’s the numbers that are as important as the sums involved.

    It’s fun. End of.

Edit, okay not end of. It’s really helped me enjoy riding more, and it’s made me treat challenging sections of my ride as something to attack and get better on, rather than dawdle up on the way to the easier bits,.

Yeah, I’m expecting the cheap WTBs to be wire, not that worried tbh, they’re going on a Karate Monkey so it’s not like it’s lightweight anyway.
