Some Royal Mail planes where cancelled/delayed from Belfast due to the high winds and weather last week. So think that will be a major factor.

…guess this might be a reason why it’s taking so long

The one at Alvaston BMX track was originally supposed to be much better then it is but IIRC it was due to be completed after the main track was finished, but wasn’t due to local scrotes vandalising the contractor’s equipment, so they finished up as soon as the track was done ( I don’t blame em!)

Hmmm, doesn’t sound like a good idea then!

Had already thought about kipping in the car Olly lol.

Emailed one b&b in MK and said he was closed that weekend to go on holiday. Bet he’s kicking himself now!

Will be heading up from Cornwall on me own although think a couple of people I know are heading down from Derby so hopefully will hook up with them. Otherwise I might be looking for some STWers to hook up with!

Might even take my bike that weekend and head over to Chicksands for the first time too :D

ADvantage fan here as well. Run 2.1 folding Exceptions front and rear on my EX8 all year round, although have had the 70a on the rear before.

Am about to start consolidating my jump bike and XC hardtail (which also has 2.1 ADvantages) onto an MmmBop and that’ll have 2.25 ADs on too when complete.

Every year this topic arises at this time of the year, not just on STW but on the news channels and breakfast TV etc. The same positives get banded about as do the same ol’ negatives but 2 days after the change, everyone’s got used to it and moved on! :-)

on my screen the little buttons above where i’m typing now (bold, italic, “quote” etc…) are massive and each one is stretched so it’s the same width as the main column

Same here on my works PC with IE7.
    Like the new look tho!

Another vote for Innerhaven, stayed there for a couple of nights last month – really nice place with all important bike storage, washing and drying facilities :-)

As Potdog says, you don’t need phone signal for the GPS to work – it’ll record stas but you won’t be able to view it on a map on the screen. I use My Tracks (which uses Google maps) for mapping rides but turn ‘Airplane mode’ on which turns off the phone signal but still uses the GPS.

Oh yeah, and HTC Android phones are excellent so you won’t be disappointed if you get one :-)

I was until last year! Moved back home to Cornwall after 5 years in Derby. Worked for DCC with the Cycle Derby team so had some involvement with some of the tracks too (only a very small amount of involvment tho!).

The Chad Park track is very small compared to the Alvaston track, more like pump track sized (though it’s not a pump track), if you live down Alvaston end then i wouldn’t specifically make a trip although it’s only a 10min ride max from Alvaston so if you fancy a wander then you might as well head over. Local kids are ok, you’ll probably get bombarded with “how much is your bike mister?” questions though!

Just remembered, there is also a small track in Osmaston Park, just across from Moorways Leisure centre. Never went to it so no idea what it’s like but again, another option. :-)

    Coleman – ah right, that’s a shame.

Carl – when I say DH runs, that was probably a bit of an over statement tbh! – basically a few runs with some berms and some ladder drops (those that weren’t trashed before). Nothing too severe really, probably still worth a visit as I’m sure there’s still stuff there to play on.

Mickleover BMX track is still there tho nothing like the one at Alvaston. Very under-used so the surfacing was/is loose and sketchy as ****! There is also a small BMX track in Chaddesden Park FWIW too.

A few decent sized jumps on the main run up from the bridleway, although just one line of 3 or 4 jumps in succession. I’ve not been up there for over a year having moved away so may be different now. There’s also some downhill runs in the same area with some drop offs and there used to be some north shore type stuff too although it kept getting destroyed. Worth a look anyway – try looking in THIS area for the jumps :-)

There’s some jumps in the woods at Drum Hill just north of Derby. I was also told by some local kids (a while back) of some jumps in the Mickleover area, possibly near the BMX track over there???

Wow, all my kit goes in the tumble dryer at home after a wash, no problems with shrinkage or anything!

Wish we had drying facilities at work of some sort though. We have a shower which is great but only an open window for drying stuff (boo).

Might have seen you on Friday at Glentress (think i remember seeing someone in a top similar to that in the 4th piccy).

My first time up at GT (had been riding the Stanes all week with 3 other guys), really enjoyed it despite the wind and rain like you say! Weather looks a lot better on the Saturday… unfortunately I was doing a 12hr drive back to Cornwall that day!

Shaun – yeah ordered from Game, got email on Wed to say despatched but no delivery by Royal Mail today. Bit annoying as I had time to play it today but won’t for the next week now (but that is coz I’m heading up to ride 7Stanes so I can wait).

Experience will count for a lot, possibly more than a degree. Saying a degree is desirable/required is so that you get a reasonably educated person who can carry out tasks like writing reports, work to deadlines etc applying.

I used to be an LA (local authority, not Los Angeles…that would’ve been awesome) Cycling Officer and really enjoyed it, wish I was still doing it rather than ‘general’ highways design I do now.

If you want the job, don’t be a pessimist and apply for it and see what happens, you’ll almost definately get an interview at the very least IMHO. :-)

There's plenty of bridleways to link together for some XC riding south of Derby around Ticknall area. There's a regular Monday night ride from the John Thompson pub in Ingleby from 6.30pm. Usually a quick pace but gets you fit lol!

    Otherwise, as above :-)

Thanks for the advice guys, that's really helpful.

Just had a go on Sheldon Brown's site, and looks like as you say a 45/18 combo would be about right. I notice most of the Pompetamine complete bikes come with a 48/18 set up which would take a bit more effort on the steep climb so will keep an eye out for a 45t chainring in the sales!
