NJA – that’s verging on nerdy coin collecting so doesn’t count

Friday’s looking like a bit of light rain, but looking pretty breezy. Hopefully that’ll be all!

Yep, heading up Friday eve with a couple of riding mates! Should be good…not sure if the weather is going to play nice though.

Grogley or Hustyns woods just outside has some good stuff apparently but I’ve not ridden there yet so couldn’t direct you. That’s probably not much help!

Was unveiled last month in the UK and is still a work in progress. At the moment it’s mainly just Sustrans National Cycle Network routes. If you see any dodgy route suggestions then report it and help make it better :-)

I stick my Five on it’s side in the back of ours. Will fit in with just the front wheel off with the back seats down…but with the front passenger seat tilted forward. Even with the rear wheel off, I still need the passenger seat forward so not sure if I could carry a passenger up front as well as a bike or two!

    Edit:

PS a dimwit will be along shortly to ask if you are a planning a career in hairdressing or to make some vaguely homophobic comment…

Uh oh – I just owned up to having a Five AND a Mini. Let the onslaught commence!

Ragley were supposed to be bringing out the 10-4 last year with 140mm front/100mm rear travel, which looked & sounded great (I was looking for essentially like my MmmBop but with some give in the back end at the time). Then Brant left and Ragley pretty much went AWOL ever since (not sure if that’s connected or not). Last I heard was that the release date had been delayed til next year for ‘further testing’.

In the mean time, I gave up waiting…and got a Five…and I love it :-)

I’d give Practical Cycles a shout. They sell Yuba’s and the Nuvinci hub so should be able to advise on that combo.

Tern folding bikes seem alright and look good (as much as a folding bike can look good) though are very similar to Dahon bikes (no surprise though seeing as Hon Jnr left Dahon to set up Tern).

Am contemplating a Link C7 or D8 myself for commuting/work trips.

As well as Chad Park, there’s also a little track next to the Sustrans path by Murray Park school in Mackworth and also one in Osmaston Park next to Moorways Leisure centre. Not necessarily worth the trip but if you’re passing by, they are there.

Charge Scourer on Wiggle – 25% off, plus another 10% on top off until Monday brings it down from £630 to £425. Am tempted myself, more than I should be!

I’m 31, with a long term partner and a 2.5 year old daughter and yet I don’t feel like a grown-up! It still genuinely sounds weird to me when I’m referred to as a ‘man’ by others!

mostly I feel like a teenager, but my job puts me in adult situations and I feel like a fraud, or that at any moment someone is going to out me as the child I think I am!

I’m window shopping for similar at the moment. The Whyte’s look pretty good as mentioned but I’m also liking the Charge Scourer and Zester too. Cube Hyde is worth a look as well and also the Boardman hybrid.

Doesn’t get in the way at all Wurzel, there is a slight hint of contact/rub on the shifter lever when I fully press on the Reverb button but not enough to worry about.

PaulD – those are ‘new’ LX cranks, which is now a touring groupset, no longer MTB (SLX replaced the LX mtb groupset).

Coogan – That’s the setup I’ve been looking at. No worries with the forces acting around the door seals and gutter then?

Have you got the moonroof as well? If so, will it open with the roof bars on ok?

Just picked up a Mini Cooper (Mk1) this week and looking at bike carrying options. Would prefer to get some roof bars as I already have a roof bar mounted bike rack, but not sure whether to get these clamp-on type bars or not (I’m not even entertaining the idea of the OEM dilling option!)

Anyone else got any experiences of the clamp-on type? I’m a little concerned it might damage the door seals/gutter with the wind loading and other forces on the bike rack and bars?

My first sporting love before I got into biking was basketball and my favourite team, the Orlando Magic, used to play home games at the Orlando Arena, which was usually shortened to the ‘O-rena’…

…and 45 comes from the number one of my favourite Magic players (Charles ‘Bo’ Outlaw) wore…

What they (^) all said! My 4th Dyfi and despite being unfit and getting 2 and a half punctures, and rolling in right near the back, I had a great time! The only downside was getting a puncture halfway down the World Cup Descent, which is one of my favourite descents anywhere :(

Being right at the tailend, I did see a fair few energy gel wrappers on the trail which was a bit dissapointing. Also heard ambulance sirens blaring at one point so hope whoever binned it is ok.

Loved my MmmBop. It was so much fun to ride that my Trek Fuel EX stopped getting used. Was great on my local shortish XC rides with a bit of DH mixed in and I never noticed a harsh back end until I rode Afan earlier this year on (not as smooth as it used to be!). I decided then I wanted a full suss which rode like the MmmBop but with some give in the back end (I mean as in suspension rather than steel flex), so got a Five. If I didn’t have to sell it to pay for the Five, I would definately have kept it!

Ragley did put up their FB page a few weeks ago a sneak-peak shot of the MmmBop replacement, called the Marley which I think is due out later this year.

So who’s giving the Trek Sawyer race a go on the Saturday?!

    From the Facebook page:

We have a brand new Trek Sawyer 29’er to give away over the weekend. To be eligible to win it you will need to turn up and sign on on Saturday. Then once you have collected your number you can try your hand at a timed lap of the ‘Sawyer loop’ – racing head to head with another rider against the clock. Times will be recorded on a leader board, and we will take the fastest rider, as well as the 20th, 30th and 50th fastest, and take them through to a secret non-bike decider on Sunday afternoon to find a winner. The track will stay open until dusk on Saturday, so don’t leave it too late.

    I’m going (my 4th Dyfi)!

But I’ve done the least amount of riding in advance of the event ‘ever’ and I’m slightly worried I won’t make it round! Still, I’ll be doing it on my recently built Five so looking forward to blasting down those slatey descents!

    Sounds like a sorted pack!

I saw that it comes in two sizes (S/M & M/L) and I’m inclined to go for the larger of the sizes simply for the bit of extra capacity. Any of you folks, about 5’8″ and slim build – if so, which one did you go for?

Also, the hip belt pockets are something I want in a new pack – sounds like they don’t have zips but how secure are they whilst out riding, and what sort of size are they/what can you fit in em?

I went from 20mm Maxle 1 1/8 steerer coil Pikes to 15mm Maxle tapered Dual Air Revs a few months back and not noticed any difference in stiffness. To be fair, I’m not the type of person who would notice it anyway and I’m only 10.5st (bit more with me kit on!) but I do hammer the descents and am happy to get my wheels a few feet in the air, and the Revs are great.

The difference in weight is the most obvious thing…much easier to get the front end up when needed. Also the tuneability is good as well with the Dual Air.
