just got some GUB cartridge bearing cnc’d alloy jockeys in red off some bloke in china for 8quid (ebay, other colours available) cant comment on quality though, not used them yet, failing that CRC have slx/lx ones for about the same and,, im not 100% sure,, i think you can mod them with a drill or file to fit your old XT ceramic sleeve/bearing internals,,, have done this myself on old xt mechs with no probs, before the advent of the shadow mechs though.

bit awkward to do but a cracking creaking type noise can usualy be ‘felt’ when it occurs, IE grab hold of differnt bits of the bike until you feel it a bit more on different parts of the bike

    hope that make sense.

most of them will be under the influence of something or other and up for it,

a pal of mine DJs to the trendy mod kids in the pubs around town and just bangs on his fave dub, reggae, motown, punk etcetcetc.
has got loads of work off people asking ”whats this tune mate”

just pick your faves or classics you cant go wrong. 8)

edit, my pal doesnt even mix,, just drops them in,,, sometimes really badly :D

wouldnt bother going local or ‘cheap’ as it only costs about 20quid to post a frame, and you need an expert job done if the some of the ‘powder coat=cracked frame’ horror storys are to be believed

check out dave yates or argos racing as i belive they are the experts and both charge around about 160quid.

their is a firm in london that has a clear but coloured laquer option (think on-one 456 raw) my brothers pal had his frame done in a clear metalic copper type colour,,,,, looked amazing.

will try and find details if your interested.

tried a 36 but didnt like, seemed to be missing gears on a 2008 orange five and a 2009 on one 456 both with 34 cassette on the back, local cheekys are big climbs then long XCs with rocky DHs at the end and a long XC back to base.

prefare a 34t on both bikes, both have a bash and blackspire stingers

get a steel ring they last a lot longer and are cheaper, aluminium rings are pointless unless your a weenie.

    just my opinion anyway.

if you have money you are relying on sitting in you paypal ,, withdraw it now as a precaution.

i have had a couple of nasty run ins with pay pal recently and i have lost out everytime, it seems that paypal have no morals or common sense.

got some 2008 m4s for 120 quid off ebay recently and they are far better than my x2s on my local steep techy stuff, i havnt tried every brake known to MTB man but i like the M4s.

it also seems that every piece of the brake is available as a spare

bowkerstead farm 5 mins from grizedale, you have the option of camping in the open field or in the wooded area that has secluded bays/clearing so its a bit quieter,, its agreat place and arthur the owner allows you to light camp fires.

DONT practice on gravel unless you like the look/feel of gravel rash :?

on my local cheeky trail there is a tight turn after a steep chute that is made up of loose loamy forest soil and when i get it right its a lot faster to drift it than controling my speed before entry , when you get a drift right its quite thrilling,,, (the feeling of will it or wont it slip), when you get it wrong it can hurt so knee pads are a must.

i believe you need to get your weight perfectly central and low on the bike to allow it to drift (both wheels) , i dont know if my technique is correct but it works for me.

i found that a paint roller i had in the shed fitted mine perfectly, a couple of taps with the rubber mallet was all it took, they do seem to wear after a while and will then not fit/perform as they should.

im thinking that all these neon frames will look naff in 18mnths as ‘fashion’ changes.
my new 5 frame will be the same boring chrome grey as my current one but it hides scratches/dirt very well and looks ‘newer’ than my mates 5 (same year but in yellow).

lizard skin carbons last for years (mine are 3 years old and still going strong).

copter tape is good if you do as much of the frame as you can, it can look a bit weird after a while as if the frame dulls with age/scuffing you have shiney squares of new paint work (did this on my 456 anyway)

http://www.paragontapes.co.uk do copter tape in a range of sizes and finishes (matt/gloss)

with regards to caliper clearance, is this something i need to take into account or can i just buy a roadie version and bend any struts around the obsticles. i want to do this on the cheap as its just a once a year type ride.

a little known fact is that decking is SHITE, its just the latest trendy must have that the ‘designer’ type programs will have you believe is the best thing to use

come autumn/winter you will be going arse over tit every time you step out the door, if you treat it with expensive ‘anti slip paint’ it might help but you will be doing this every year at much cost

i used scaffold planks instead much, much cheaper per square yard than trendy decking and they are fire proof (BBQ) and warp proof as per building REGs they are also a lot more weather proof than trendy decking with out ‘treating’ them first

next time you go for a jolly on the continent look what they use, do you ever see BnQ decking over there,,,,, NO YOU DONT, if your looking for LONG TERM outside flooring i would go with flags or tiles,,,,, deckings trendy and not really practical.

if you really want decking, BIG ROUGH PLANKS OF whatever is what you need, plus a bit of preserve. dont bother with sickens as that is just wood preserve mixed with white spirit to help it sink into the timber and you will pay A LOT more for the company to mix this for you when you can do it yourself.

bit of research on the subject will save you a LOT of ‘new bike bits’ worth of money. :-)

    hope that helps.

    agree with ya JUNK.

    bollx, MTFU.
some of the best rides ive had are post booze sesh as the “should i hit that or not’ way of thinking doesnt count as your brain is muddled and you think your RAMBO.

i get up in the morn pished,,,, i apologise for being hung over and holding the straights back,,,, but,,,,,, after the climb im reet, once the endorfins (sp?) kick in its like snorting a line,,,,,, i havnt for years as MTBing provides all of the ‘rush’ i need (im an ex-raver)

cigarettes, alcohol and adrenalin (take note Mr gallagher) thats HARDCORE.

ive had a few as i write this (carb loading :-) and probably talking shte but im sure there are more like me out there,,,,,, just because you choose a the sport of MTBing to fill your time doesnt meen you are a fitness freak, all the lads i ride with like a beer,,,,, or the odd bit of chemicals,,,,,who gives a fek,,,,, we just like having a laff in the outdoors, fitness is a byproduct.

up rivi (bolton/horwich) great hill loop/decent as it was pssing it down and its a bit drier. took my five for one last go of the ‘MISTRESS’ before she is traded in for the new 2011 orange five frame.

**** gutted as i just didnt ‘feel it’ today,,,,no flow etc, it was supposed to be a memorable ride but it wasnt, fell off 3 times, gutted as i usualy nail the same decents with a grin 8) but in my defence it was a bit slippy and i did big rides fri night and sat day so i will put it down to being tired. have took loadsa photos of the ‘MISTRESS’ being stripped,,, oh-er  , feels as though im splitting up with my one true love, im sure that the next girlfriend,,, erm,,, frame, will take my mind off it.

possible 4 week wait for a new ‘MISTRESS’ due to the colour i have chosen. will have to ride the ‘WHORE’ (456) until then.

   .

give it a couple more rides on your locals before you make any more expensive decisions, new stuff takes time to get used to.

you never know you may prefare the new set up eventualy.

being used to a (680mmx80mm) i didnt like a new 50mm stem with 711mm bars set up on the carpark but they worked so much better on my locals and after a few runs i was really happy i made the investment.

if you do use the white spirit/plastic milk bottle/shake method, pour the used white spirit into a small jar and leave it for a couple of days, all the crap will settle to the bottom and you can re use the cleaner stuff at the top.

i just bought a whole new freehub (steel upgrade) after near flattening a socket set bit trying to bodge the outer most race out.the pro2 it came off was 2years old at the time, its over 3 years now and the original bearings in the hub itself still show no signs of wear.

i practiced on the old alloy one again recently after the same 1 x freehub side bearing on a newer pro 2 wheel set on the HT had developed play, ive knocked fek out of it and it just isnt budging. think i will just buy a new freehub again as the rest of the bearings still seem to be fine.

as a positive it means ive got a few spare if i ever attemp to do a proper job and fek the old ones up.
who cares if its the more expensive or the heavier option, it saved a lot of swearing and the job was done in ten mins.
