One wonders what new countries do in this scenario – how do they survive?
Australia was pegged to pound sterling for 56 years until they went their own way (edit: with the the australian dollar)
PS you forget they get their share of the assets which will include the reserves and the currency
guess that means a share of the debts as well then 😉
orangeFree Memberfrom Moodys website
Overall, given the small size of Scotland’s economy relative to that of the remainder of the UK and Scotland’s likely investment-grade credit profile, any credit impact (negative or positive) from Scottish independence on UK sovereign creditworthiness is likely to be limited. In terms of credit positive elements, Moody’s notes that Scottish independence would eliminate the current fiscal transfers between Scotland and the remaining regions of the UK, marginally improving fiscal dynamics for the remainder of the UK given higher Scottish per capita public expenditures and Scotland’s older demographic profile. Any division of revenues from North Sea oil would be largely credit neutral for the UK sovereign given that they are small, and declining, relative to the size the UK economy.
Potential risks to this assessment arise if Scotland refuses to assume a “fair and proportionate share” of its debt obligations, which would increase the UK’s net debt burden and would be considered credit negative. In addition, a potential currency union with the remainder of the UK would be credit negative if it were to materialise. However, cross-party opposition to such an outcome makes this unlikely. Scotland’s adoption of an independent currency would be credit neutral for the UK.
orangeFree MemberI thought the no campaign was saying we couldn’t have a currency union.
of course a CU is possible, and the terms and conditions would have to be agree, but why would the rUK agree to take such a risk on a new foreign economy without something in return?
and it’s not exactly independence without your own bank, reserves, policy and governance – and that doesn’t happen overnight (or in 18 months time) – it’d take over ten years to build up decent reserves to secure a new scottish currency, never mind all the SNP’s spending promises and a potential deficit reduction programme
that is what is not being explained, and Alex keeps changing his mind over what currency he thinks is best – is it the euro, is it the pound, or something else?
orangeFree Memberobviously NOOOOOO, but OP – not trying to be out of order here but does your wife actually realise what ‘guaranteeing his mortgage’ means to you and her and your future borrowing ability?
especially if you are about to become the sole income earner supporting your family/mortgage – does she realise this? and what could happen to your family situation if something happened to your BIL?
why has she come to this conclusion? is she a mortgage or financial advisor? has she thought of everything? no, then how is this a properly considered and thought out proposal? its not, its a family one
consider other options – loans, saving more, alternative mortgage advice, shared ownership properties
orangeFree Membersome people always see the negative rather than the ‘look how lucky we are’ side
that household isn’t the squeezed middle though – wife, 2 kids and a very good salary – their household income is better than 90% of other households in the UK
orangeFree Membertaxi drivers who use their hazard warning lights instead of indicators
so Mr. Taxi Driver, are you turning left/turning right/stopping/about to perform a U turn or have you broken down?
orangeFree Memberlive in england – half scottish/half english (lots of family still in scotland)
nope – don’t think it is necessary for an independent scotland, but they have every right to choose
imo – we are better off together on this small island, i don’t see the point of multiple parliaments, it will not benefit the population of this island
the only winners will the the scottish political class with a new tier of civil servants
the working class scots won’t be better off but just the same, but at least they can’t whinge at westminster any more, too many scots never leave home (including my family – we go up north, they never travel down south – they are not poor) and don’t quite understand that a large proportion of people in Wales. NI and England feel the same way about london calling the shots
it sickens me that the true intentions/plans are not being correctly and rightly discussed up front with the scottish population first (defence/education/health/currency/the EU etc.) and it appears to be a case of vote first, and we’ll work out the fine details later – never trust a politician
hey – at least if it goes ahead the LABOUR PARTY are screwed in Westminster!
orangeFree Memberjust opened our council charge letter for 2014-2105 (two adults in a band B home) this morning as well, but this is simply a case of the LGA whinging because councils have less money to spend and are suggesting an alternative source of revenue under the banner of ‘ oh, won’t you think of the children and the struggling families…..’
how about they:
i) become more efficient – reduce wasting public money in the first place
ii) look where the real wealth is – people who own multiple E banded homes instead of pensioners who live alone
iii) clarify what who they consider ‘wealthy’ to be – too few people like those above with multiple homes, therefore yeah lets suggest to go for the single people in E banded homes, yep a lot more of them around, they MUST be wealthy, right?
iv) offer incentives or introduce schemes to redevelop / make available large homes back into the housing market, especially empty properties left unused for years
part of the problem in the UK is simply only a third of households actually pay their way for the services they use, the other two thirds don’t
councils have a choice – cut services or increase taxes and the LGA are suggested the latter
orangeFree Membermmm interesting reading – so contacting the planner is a no go
my advice to him is to move asap – which he wants to do (but next year), after the extension is built, his theory being – the new owner would be aware of the neighbours extended property and has already accepted it , rather than buying a place they know is about to be extended and have to put up with the disruption
what we don’t know is who enforces the convenant then? – which court? who does the neighbour answer to if he breaks a convenant? sounds expensive to me as a lawyer is required and i don’t think he wants to piss off his neighbour, even though his neighbour doesn’t give a shit about pissing him off
orangeFree Membermy snapped SRAM chains are ran on 1×9, 2×9 and 3×9 bikes – what can i say, i like bikes…
so its down to SRAM or my legs of steel…..
so SRAM then 😆
just fitted a KMC X9 73 to the 1×9
orangeFree MemberI have found 10 speed to be generally better!!
good to hear!
how do they go – plates pulling off the rivet ?
kind of – both side plates will bow out at one end and the rivet rip out
orangeFree Memberi quite like it – and love to have one
but pray tell – what does a £4k paint job look like?
orangeFree Memberwouldn’t a front hub conversion to a thro axle be to a 9mm? and the rear 10mm?
orangeFree Memberyou could go demand a different set of wheels – but would look silly and have no standing to do so as the manufacturer always writes in small print that they have the right to change the spec of a bike as they see fit
orangeFree Memberdo you watch the tv standing up? if so fine
tv should really be at the same level as your eyes when watched
not stuck at high level like some chav ornament
orangeFree MemberAnd when it’s not exended, it’s considerably more compressed than a normal camper. So not great for chucking stuff in, or for cheeky camping in the wild.
watch the video – there is loads of space inside
i’m going to get two though, just in case – and put a stoner portaloo extension on them as well…
orangeFree Memberconsidering this frame myself – but the sizing is a little odd, and thats putting me off from ordering
i’d normally get a Large frame – but the Large size comes up really short, for example the Large only has an eff. top tube of 595mm and the XL is 620mm – i’d be needing the XL but I don’t need a 20″ seat tube!
mybe Sam could supply further information on the recommended rider heights for each?
the PA29er is a no show so far, the Solaris is more suited to 100mm (already have a 100mm HT 29er), and the QH is over twice the price, and the Surface probably even more!
orangeFree MemberMine has increased on both sides, started out 5%, then 7%, now 8% – employers contribution has also increased to 12%
but that is a bit more than the average reckon 5%/11% is more typical – depending on industry and conditions
Annuity rates though, have dropped sharply – something related to the QE the BoE is experimenting with
orangeFree MemberOrange, got a link to that?
just done a search but can’t find it – may have been the old forum, it was a while back

I wonder how much of the stuff on the STW classifieds is nicked…. there have been a few dodgy adverts on there recently that have made me wonder.I looked at somebody’s selling history, and it looks like they had split 4 or 5 bikes in the last month – of course it could be perfectly genuine, but it made me wonder.
The point being – are we part of the problem?
my brother experienced something similar with 3 bikes he had stolen, one ended up being resold on e-bay and was successfully recovered despite the local police being useless
but he was more hacked off when he noted a STW forum member showing off anearly new 29er complete build on STW that had been bought from an e-bayer which was basically an exact combination of frame and parts from his two 29er bikes that were stolen down to ths same qr’s/grips and chainstay protector
my point being – yes i do believe a good 10-20% of kit on the classifieds is actually stolen – but we look the other way because its a good deal and we kid ourselves to believe that sellers here are all good guys with the same values – when they clearly are not
traders should be banned and a minimum post count of 100 posts before you can use the For Sale section imo
orangeFree Memberexperienced similar thing with a much younger child in a supermarket – mum had simply got fed up of child and walked off – 6 year lad was in a right state, quickly deposited child with supermarket staff who found mother at the checkout
staff were gobsmacked when they reunited child with mother – all she did was tell him off, i wanted to slap the ungrateful cow
orangeFree MemberThis however is my own conclusion after doing some thorough research.
each to their own, and all that – but it is a utter bobbins conclusion
why buy a second hand orange five, with that in mind?
orangeFree Memberthey should of listened to ‘we’re alive’ and used some claymore mines

orangeFree Membernext the the police start taking nonsense – the simple response is “they attacked me with their tools when I disturbed them, therefore I used reasonable force to defend myself”
And when it means protecting your family/home/bikes, reasonable force = a good **** battering
It’s the only language scum understand
orangeFree MemberThanks for the replies so far
Signing off for tonight (need to chill out a little) and will start again tomorrow with a few calls and a polite chat with him
orangeFree Membertbh – i think he does have issues, in the last week its almost like he isn’t up for it anymore
i reckon his programme is blown now, and he has other projects on the go that should of started and he is still messing about with this one
i’m over a barrel because it’ll take so long to arrange a replacement, and we just can’t have a bathroom and working wc for say another 6-8 weeks
reckon he’ll take a least two more weeks to finish, everything is here to finish the job and has been weeks before he turned up, just want the house back, finished and cleaned, its a tip
more i think about is option 1 is out, 2 isn’t my fav, therefore 3 is the one left – don’t wish to piss him off by amending the final amount on a sliding scale tbh
orangeFree Memberu might find it hard to get someone to “finish someone else’s work
that is a concern – particularly on the electrics
orangeFree Memberits been acceptable so far, but the floor tiling was okay – not great
orangeFree MemberThanks for the replies guys!
Done some research and I’ve found that the 19″ rockhopper has an ETT of 590mm and he uses a 100mm stem
He has confirmed he is 6’2″ now, so maybe thinking the 20.5″ with a shorter stem, say 80mm, is nearly the same length
But then again the 19″ with a 90mm stem would be same
orangeFree MemberI’d forgotten about the vertical slate knives of death corner on the last(?) descent too, always makes me slightly apprehensive that one. I see that corner had a warning marshall this time. Always nice to finish in one piece.
ah.. i call that one ‘cheese grater corner’ 😆
orangeFree Memberi run a 2.25 LUST Ardent on the back of my FS’er – love it, prefer it over the crossmark as well
about 58mm wide on flow rims
