I have one road type bike that would fall into “gravel” categoty with slackish ht of the right length that stem up is all day and down is cx and race. Slack angle means I can push myself to fatigue in Greater comfort and stability. As yet it’s not been anything other than rapid round twisty cx courses, single-track and long road jaunts.

Compared to the road bikes i used to have (including ex-team euskaltal, and cinelli) it’s a revelation in comfort which in turn, for me, brings more speed.

Still working on the engine mind…

I have this very setup. Having used alpine 8s for years I didn’t really notice the change. When hopping back and forth between geared and hub gear you notice the shift in balance but it swiftly just becomes part of the feel of the bike.
As for the hub, its awesome. The range is huge and changing whilst stationary is a revelation. If I could afford it, every bike would have one.

We have a breeding Goshawk pair nearby and seeing them thunder through the trees is staggering.
Other than that there’s a tawny owl that often used to fly alongside in one bit of singletrack. I think it accompanied me 10-12 times one summer.

    One of those two!

For all round crossing clement pd or mxp are awesome.

for gravel/road: some file tread like the speedcross tyre.

I’ve had some dhb ones for what must be coming on for 9 years. They’re well made, comfortable, good temperature etc. They’re ace

For a 26, it’s hard to beat a chameleon. Great all round long travel hardtail that’s not too heavy and able to singlespeed etc.

I always liked the earlier, twitchier ones but even the new ones are pretty nimble by all accounts.

ITs hard to go wrong to be fair. I had a 456 that I loved and befes are pretty ace too.

Fwiw I’m riding everything inc jumps/gaps on a 100mm and 120mm 29er. They are both faster than anything else. The 120mm Honzo is like a tank. Rolls over everything.

can I suggest Sintra for cycling and lisbon for the city bits…

I think MTB is “mountain bike” but what we generally ride are ATBs. I like the phrase Velo Tout Terrain most though

The swamp bits are not too bad, especially on 5inch tyres. Because I want to stick as close as possible to the course of the river my plan is to do it in early febuary if/as/when the bogs freeze this year.
I’ve ridden some of the shoreline stuff and it’s rideable.

Best trips to fur tor are when you can straight line it.

Just by way of a followup, Here’re two loops I’ve got planned for 2017:

    The Dartmoor Forest Perambulation-By bike!

    and

    The definitive Dartmoor Epic?

why/how is a £100 recycled tamper better than a £20 tamper? It’s a tool for squashing coffee grounds.

Yep. Roll the dice in return for cheap stuff. They sent me stuff I’d not ordered and I am bored of emailing them to get the right stuff.

I’ve been lucky enough to own most of the front page and most of my wish list. Still want one of these:

That’s a pretty good loop crispy. Add in the cleave and it’s pretty well “the” Dartmoor epic.

    N-S went:

    Milatary road
    Hangings tone
    Sittaford
    Postbridge
    Bellever
    Hexworthy
    Terry Hill
    Nakers Hill
    Redlake
    Old railway.

New versions go left or right of Nakers Hill. That place was tough.

I think there’s not a single bit that’s not rideable, and I think I have a rideable route for the dartmoor bounds…

I’ve been very lucky. The best have been H-16 brm followed by 27 litre zeppelin engined special followed by Ford’s own gt40.

Fwiw my cousin recently rode Leeds-Johannesburg-Chamonix-Leeds on hers and it never skipped a beat save for needing to clean a bit of sand out of the shifter after a Saharan storm. Apparently it was shifting fine, it just felt a bit gritty.
It’s on its way back to southern Europe now I think.

I have nano 40s in the stooshie at the mo. If I needed more mud clearance I’d fit a 35mm or even a uci legal tyre…
