    Ian – I have the 501 which is supposedly newer/better etc and having had it apart a few times for cleaning etc it really is a nice bit of kit, except for this one really poor bit of design. That plastic part has an injection point at the thinnest, weakest part of the cage and so naturally it’s here that there is a failure. It’s not a plastic that glues well which is a bit of a bugger, else I’d be tempted to try that.

    I have had it all apart this morning into component parts and I bodged a repair, but I’m getting a reluctant take-up in 1st due to not being able to fully tension the pre-load spring (that you identify stu) because of the cracked roller cage.

    With a bit of luck I’ll source a spare and we’ll be away. – Thanks for the efforts coatesy!

    the roller clutch in question is this one;

    on the end of the carrier frame, which you can see on the left end of the picture below;

    Awesome Burchy!

    Druidh, thank you very much for the supplier, I’m afraid it’s not that clutch. The part is not listed but sits at the left-hand end of the carrier unit in that drawing, unless they’re the same clutch unit of course which would make sense from an engineering perspective but sadly reparability doesn’t seem to be the thing with the big S

    Don’t confuse the chunky guidedog/pet/show labradors with the labrador retriever/field labrador. I think they should almost be considered two different breeds.
    A chunky choc lab or any other show type will be a poor choice, they have been selectively bred for temperament, steadyness and lower exercise requirements that suits their purpose.

    Perrin on the other hand comes from working and field stock, as you can see he is not chunky (29kg), has a slimmer profile along with a different shaped head/nose etc. He will happily join me for 3-4 hour rides every day of the week in the holidays and does a minimum of 2-3 hours of solid running daily (2 hours in the park in the morning with doggy pals and a 10k in the evening).

    Regardless of breed, you needs to build up to the higher exercise levels and if you’re doing a lot of miles it’s worth talking to your vet & considering some food additive for joint care. I would also say that it’s worth investing in some ruffwear boots to help protect the dog’s pads if you’re doing a lot of long stuff/on trail centers/on the moor.

    Perrin the wonderhound is a black lab from working stock and amazingly game for riding.

    You’ll need a wetsuit if last night’s ride is anything to go by but it was still pleasant. I can do an early morning jaunt on monday – do you want moorland & mud / wood, mud & rocks / wood and mud/ mud and mud?

    email is in profile.

    From my experiences of depression, one way to get fitter and faster and to feel better about yourself is to put the computer/gps in a drawer and just ride for the pleasure of riding. If you constantly strive to better yourself, what target are you setting?
    <snip>

    Why do you feel you have to compare yourself, especially if you ride for pleasure and not in a chain gang or in order to compete?

    <snip>
    put the stopwatch away and ride for its own sake, proud of what you’ve achieved so far. The benefits will come faster than you think, and you don’t need to worry about targets.

    Hell yes. Well said.

    I remember the first redbull 24 hour race, they gave us a crate of red-bull but we had to promise & possibly sign a it of paper not to drink it during the event.

    fwiw julio I’m currently running a 26inch rigid with an alfine hub that seems like a nice little toy for the moor, off out tomorrow in fact.

    The 29er is rigid btw and if my guess is correct I’ve been riding with Burchy a bit of late and he is quite capable when it comes to cranking up steep stuff to say the least.

    I ride a singlespeed 29er over the moor with no real issues.
    There’re a very few places I have to walk, like the climb up to water or the section over the waterbar on the way up to houndtor but then again, the geared cyclists are also walking.

    cold slows down the reaction in the cell so less energy is available.

    I have done this on a surly km (29er) and currently do it with a sanderson soloist (26). I use 33/17 on the 26inch wheels to stay close to a 2:1 ratio and I can’t remember the other but I suspect it was 32/18

    run mine down to -8 with no problems with stock lube and full length cable outer at the time. It’s worth taking a bit of time to exclude water from the cable.

    Soloist with 130mm revs is pleasingly slack.
