I do this occasionally with a standard planet-x trainer and it’s absolutely fine – it helps if your trainer is in the zwift database – or is a copy/rebranded version of one that is, (It needs to know the trainer characteristics to convert your speed to a power measurement) but yeah it works and it’s better than just using the bike computer (not sure if it’s £12.99 a month better – but that’s a different story).

You were either raised on Dukes of Hazzard or those terrifying British public information films. Your attitude to speed bumps will be calibrated accordingly.

Speedbumps themselves are pretty inconsistent – I’ve seen ones on main roads that wouldn’t unseat a roadie, and ones in car parks that could jar every bolt loose on the plushest SUV in the world even at 7mph.

Possible hijack – I had my floor ground polished and sealed (part of the ongoing garage build project) but there are a few dints in it here and there (2-3mm deep, nothing bigger than a 10p piece. What would be best to fill these? Epoxy?

Might as well add smoke alarms and heat detectors if you’re going for a wired alarm and you don’t already have mains detectors, they’re much cheaper than the interlinked 240v equivalents. My next mod is to add smart functionality via a raspberry pi

I reckon you’re far more likely to break / damage a stem in a crash ( ie bars collinding with something solid) than in a riding scenario, the kind of forces you’d need to damage a decent stem would probably break your wrists first.

We did BA LHR-SFO a few years back and it was a superb experience considering we were in economy. It’s not exactly a family holiday route so it tends to attract a generally genteel passenger base. Their LHR-LAX flights seemed pretty decent too.

    6’3″ but no space complaints.

Grenoble flights booked for mid January, but that’s it so far – I’ve seen quite a nice apartment in Meribel for me and Ms Oliverd, but I’m not sure if we should try somewhere a bit less obvious. Open to suggestions at this point

Middle of the road moderate and sensible policy ideas aren’t sexy enough to win swing voters in decent numbers, so both parties seem hell bent on going full throttle into trying their best to get their nutcases on the fringes sufficiently frothy that they’ll be unable to contain themselves on polling day.

I still maintain any constituency that can’t get a 50% turnout and a clear majority should have it’s MP chosen at random from the electoral roll. It has to be better than suffering to appease party followers

IIRC £5k is where the cheaper loans become available, so it may be cheaper to borrow a bit more, even if you don’t spend it all

I hated every screechy middle of the road moment of it, neither dark, sinister, funny, sexy or smart

The way I see it, if they’re allowed to lie to your kids you can tell them whatever you like. Just ask them to believe you’ve been at church.

Hope this is a feature in the new one – I realised how useful this was way too late in RDR1

<pedant>Technically it doesn’t create any hydrogen – it just releases it from a compound</pedant>

Deep cycling the batteries would be a bigger concern than float charging them

technically you can ride the speed pedalecs (ones that go up to 45kph/30/mph) in the uk, but you basically need to get it type approved as a moped, tax, insured, have brake acivated likes, mirror, motorbike license plate have a moped license and you need to wear a motorcycle helmet

They really don’t need all of this heavy shite.

Don’t really see why they have to have a drivetrain either.

It almost seems like the industry ignores working on all of the things that could make a great commuter e-bike (light, fast, portable) and is pushing development in the offroad sector simply because we spend more on toys.

I still reckon ballot papers should have the option to vote for “A constituent, to be selected at random”

I have no confidence in anyone awful enough to endure the machinations of local party politics.

I think my main concern is that even premium tailgate racks continue to be pretty rubbish.

I know that a towbar rack is the obvious answer, but it’s hardly a cheap option if you have to fit a towbar expressly for this purpose. (In hindsight it would have been cheaper than repairing the boot lid)

I had an Aiston on the last car (Rav4) and managed to mount it low enough that I didn’t need to have any lighting wiring. I had to get rid of that vehicle due to age/mpg/temporarily losing a parking space.

Get a rear towbar rack. Best get one that doesn’t damage your frame by clamping on it.

Looks too short? I’m not too worried about clamping on the frame, I’m not riding anything that exotic.

    Highly recommend <span class=”skimlinks-unlinked”>https://www.hatchbag.co.uk</span>/

Wonder if the Octavia one would fit the Golf? (it’s on sale and I’m a scrooge)

Seems odd to have had the bikes on a rack when they fitted inside but hey ho.

One bike had to go in someone else’s car, and even after the bike had been washed it still resulted in a much filthier car than I’d hoped to have to contend with.

i thought spoilers were a thing of the past, something to hold onto at old motorway service stations after a rave..

It’s not an aftermarket spoiler – just part of the tailgate desging that makes fitting a rack extra awkward

rewind, you left the bikes on the roof overnight, and they were still their in the morning.. wow

It was the kind of place where this was hardly a concern – hence my surprise that the rack went walkabout

I suppose now I have a borked tailgate I could just whack a load of cinchnuts into it and bolt a carrier straight on..

Previous 3 posts have helped. It’s more of a cautionary tale.

If it’s the kind of place you can leave the bikes on the rack overnight, it’s the kind of place you could expect to leave a rack for a few hours.. Honestly didn’t expect more than one or two cars would have gone past all day. And it was a £25 job off ebay so I’m not too wounded. Might have been a 9105, I can’t really check.

The biggest mistake was still buying it in the first place though.

    Perfect bikes

Well built – Well Specified – Good Value   : Choose two

I’d say perfection lies near the centre of the triangle – and the frames under discussion are down at a pointy end. Concerns such as exclusivity, fit and customer service might sway some people in that direction – but they won’t be going in droves

The advantages of a low BB aren’t really aimed at climbing ability, and in some circumstances they’re going to hinder it (like my 26″ bikes with lowish BB’s) In these circumstances a slightly shorter crank might just help, and anything that makes climbing less of a chore is a bonus. You can’t pump a climb, sometimes you cant even backpedal 1/4 of a turn to miss clipping something.

There might be marginal improvements when your pedals are “level” (there’s usually at least one pedal dropped a bit in any situation) and there’s plenty of corners where you’ll need you outside pedal right down and still use a fair bit of travel.

Overall I’m convinced that there are benefits of 170 and 165 cranks on some bikes.

There are a few places in the Ski Amadé area in Austria that are running the lifts until 15th April. Flights are dirt cheap 7th to 14th, worth a look

Anywhere else in Europe worth a cheeky 3 or 4 nights that week?

There are lots of vehicular situations where there are way less variables to consider (Trains, Trams, race tracks) and automation has yet to be proved reliably in any of these situations. I’m afraid we’re stuck with the risky old meatbags in control for a good while longer. There’s nothing wrong with giving us all the safety enhancing aids that the research for these projects create though.

I reckon in some instances train operators want to be better than national rail will allow them.

train companies reserve far too many seats on trains.  It makes it really hard to travel spontaneously

This ^ a reservation should be a little bit extra – its always annoying getting onto a carriage of empty seats with place markers all over

I quite like countrywide – used them for a house purchase about five years ago – benefits included a step by step progress tracker, and they seem to be able to use phones and send emails in a way that continues to elude regular solicitors,

It depends what vehicles you have and how sound your mates are – the perfect way is for one or two people to take a big carload of bikes and luggage out, drop it all at the chalet then drive back to Geneva and pick their remaining mates up, daisy fresh off their flight. In a fair world you’d swap roles on the way home.

It’s handy having a vehicle over there too.

I’m quite impressed – can’t say I’ve ever usedd the forums on iPhone previously due to the text size.

The box I’m typing this in now is about 10-15% wider than my phone can display though.
