another great thing about the spur cycle bell is how long it continues to ring. I’m guessing there’s a nice Doppler effect as I leave bovine peds in my wake.
I stayed in StG last summer with the family and used the Betex lift a couple of times. I wish I’d used it more. There’s also a fabulous trail from the lift station down to the Thermes called Pipeline from the Chamonix bike book. I’ve got a spare copy if you need it.
I really enjoyed it. I parked at the Aber falls car park and hauled myself up. Cracking views as the cloud lifted. I wish I could say I cleaned it but some sections were just too steep. Nothing particularly technical on the way up.
then a very fast, long descent along doubletrack. Again nothing particularly technical but numerous drainage gulleys across the path need to be used or avoided.
I used an ergo baby for 5 years with both of ours. I’d far rather use one than the front/rear mounted seats or trailers I’ve used. They’re warmer, much more comfortable, much more fun, much easier to handle the bike, and you can talk to each other easily. I only ever had positive feedback (i.e. lots of smiles) from passers-by. And yes I did do some TC greens/blues. I think it’s extremely unlikely that anyone will sanction their use in this way though.
I’ll second the chamonix bike book. The descent from Chalet Caillet is fantastic if you’ve just got the couple of hours. I also ‘explored’ a little on the other side and as mentioned I had no bother with walkers. If you have a full day I’d head up to Brevent
The Ashover area is fabulous! Yes the descents are a bit shorter than elsewhere but sweeter than most. Just check the strava heatmap for the area and you might be able to work out some ‘additions’ to the VP route. I’m sure there’s enough to keep you occupied for 3 hours but you’ll have to repeat some of the climbs, climbs the descents and vice versa. I’ve got a strava GPX handy if you need it.
I’ve gradually gone from 46/18 to 46/16 on my commuter. 70km a week. I wouldn’t go back down because I spin out on the flat, and I’m finding anything up to 5% ok. I wouldn’t ever consider fixed for my predominantly city centre commute. yeah shimano freewheels suck but they still cost 3 or 4 times less than a WI
I went up the Llanberis path on a stunning Good Friday afternoon last year. Hundreds of walkers were descending as I climbed and it caused no issues whatsoever. Just be courteous and friendly, and acknowledge any encouragement. I saw a handful of people on the Rangers descent and then no-one at all on Telegraph valley. Fabulous ride.
MBR is pretty good throughout. We had lunch and then did Tarw du, which felt like a longer slog but was punctuated with scintillating descents. Happiest I’ve ever felt on a bike I think.
