Some of the Raven climbs were steep but straight. I don’t remember anything particularly techy, but I think I got off and walked a few sections just to save the old legs

I’ve had this 3 months now and I’m convinced it’s a lot quicker than my flyer. Drop bars are a must though – it was terrifying with brakes mounted on bullhorns

some ambient faves, not necessarily fit for purpose though:

    Biosphere – Substrata
    Alva Noto – Xerrox Vol1, Vol2 and Vol3
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works 2
William Basinski – The Disintegration Loops
slowly getting on to Zomes a bit this year

and if you’re not familiar with Autechre I suggest you get started – right at the beginning with Amber, then see how far you get. Their latest (4 hour!) album elseq 1-5 is ferocious but still peppered with moments of outstanding beauty

Thanks. I’ve had a go with the straight needle nosed pliers (similar to those in the image below) but I couldn’t for the life of me get it done. The pliers would splay apart. Or the ring won’t sit anywhere near the groove.

I’m thinking the bent nose ones might be better. The snap ring is really quite stiff. It strikes me that it’s quite a knack to get this sorted.

In most countries around the world that I’ve visited there’s been no tradition of welcoming strangers, especially in remote places. England is the only place where I can remember being insulted and attacked. I know my Welsh ancestors didn’t behave well towards their neighbours but the Scots have as much reason or more to revile the English yet they too seem to have regressed after that nasty referendum business.

Do we hate Germans for the Nazis or Scandinavians for the Vikings or Italians for the Romans?

    only for balance’s sake

I went with the family, and did the blue green with them. Then the black. Really good day, and I’d definitely go back.

what pads are people using for theirs? I’ve got a set of R1x that will need a set soon and there’s no way I’m shelling out £50+ for the formula replacements

Think I’ve done about 600 km and 10000m on it. Reversed b screw, xt gs cage mech, kmc TiN chain. Shifts ok. It’s the perfect range with a AB 34t oval up front. Nicely spinny on the way up steep climbs but plenty of top range for smoother descents

Australia, certainly, and to a lesser extent Canada have reaped the benefits of an unprecedented commodities boom which protected them from the 2008 GFC

The UK hasn’t suffered anywhere near as much as the other countries that I mentioned.

It’s a myth that only Labour govts mismanage the economy. You’re letting yourself down by perpetuating such a simplistic view of UK politics.

yep they cut the top section after the downpour on Friday night last year. and yes the transition up there is almost worth it in itself.

Stage 5 last year was also immense.

Was Steve Parr still planning a week long festival there?

about 1700m and 50km, the route includes the final descent on Climach-x, as well as this masterpiece:

    http://www.pinkbike.com/video/444280/

I think it was included in the UKGE ‘national’ champs last year, totally mental. Apparently only about half the field actually rode the top section.

I’d say that best training for riding in the Tweed Valley is riding in the Tweed Valley. Stamina obviously helps but having the right technique for steep, rocky, tight, loose, rooty, muddy off-camber deathchutes can help you finish stages before you run out of puff, or crash.

go to the ride on strava, hit the spanner ‘actions’, then refresh achievements

if that doesn’t work, check that you don’t have hidden segments – click unhide if you do.

Then, change activity from ‘ride’ to ‘run’ (or something else) before changing it back to ‘ride’. I think that sorts it

    oh and well done.

You can take some if the tension out if you remove the cover. I think I used some needle nosed pliers to twist the doodahd.
