Just re-watched it 40 years after seeing it when it was originally broadcast.  It is so grim and relentlessly downbeat – still truly shocking

Been on holiday twice in first two weeks – so put on 0.8kg.  Chub Club starts now for me!

I think Instagram occasionally promotes reels which massively ups the numbers of views.  I usually get 400 to 500 views but sometimes it gets to 5000+ N

    Nothing like these numbers though

I think S1 improved as it progressed – and I enjoyed it.  Two episodes into season 2 and enjoying it.  Not enough of a Tolkien nerd to be bothered about perceived transgressions of lore

Given all the climbing on my doorstep I should spend more time on rock and less in the gym really.  To be fair to myself the weather has been so wet for last 18 months I guess

Been to Caley quite a few times over the years. Lots of brilliant problems. Mr Smooth sticks in my mind as a classic piece of nonsense

Classy line – next boulder along from one of my favourites The Horn

… within 15 minutes – Shipley Glen (and no walk in so easiest for quick blast), Caley ( short walk in to roadside boulders), Ilkley, Baildon Bank.

Almscliff is actually within 30 minutes ( sorry)

I cleared out the family home after my mum died about 18 months ago. Me and my BiL did it over maybe 20 days over a few weeks.  Possible because I had a panel van and the local council ( to my mum) have a very relaxed attitude to vans at the tip.  After the few bits me and my sister kept – I reckon about 70% to the tip, 25% to the local hospice shop and the rest to auction – lots of ceramics and some silver, got a few hundred quid mainly for the silver.  I only sold it because I promised my mum I would before she died.

It was hard work clearing the house – both physically – big 4 bed rammed with 50 years of accumulated clutter, furniture etc.  Also difficult emotionally as binning stuff she valued and impossible for me not to think about how she’d feel about me going through her stuff.

Not sure how I’d have felt about BHF or similar trawling through her stuff unfiltered. But £400 doesn’t seem a lot for the effort and cost of disposal if the local tip won’t take it

In the end it was cathartic doing it myself guess and me and BiL had the time spare

Hope it doesn’t turn out too stressful for you

There is strong evidence that pretty moderate amounts of exercise has a genuinely significant impact on reducing type 2 diabetes – just 30/40 minutes of brisk walking a day.

That should be the focus as it’s simple and easily achievable for most people. Some really hard hitting adverts showing the impact of type 2 diabetes on individuals

I’m not sure it’s a bucket list as such.  I have outcome goals around climbing at the moment but try to hold them relatively lightly – whilst enjoying the process of building towards them and the satisfaction from the progression that may lead to the final outcome.  Apology if it sounds like sports psychology BS – but I’ve recently had some coaching in this.

When I’m too old for climbing I’ll move focus onto other things – prob hiking – and I think I’ll ease from one into the other.

My mum died 18 months ago and her big 4 bed house was full of stuff.

…the abridged version is – don’t leave a house full of crap for your kids to sort out – it is really emotionally draining for them…

    The long version

It was a nightmare to clear it all – partly because it was really sad understanding why she’d kept all the stuff but just binning most of it.

Basically dozens of trips to the tip and charity shops with van loads of stuff – fortunately it was in North Derbyshire where they have a very lenient vans-at-the-recycling-centre policy.

A van full of stuff went to auction and made about £800 and that was mainly some silver and a coin collection.  The collection of pottery and porcelain was basically worth bugger all – and that was the best of it.

I’ve still got decades of photos to sort through so I can keep the good ones, plus other personal stuff still in boxes at my house I couldn’t bring myself to bin that needs sorting

Where did you get that deal. It’s costing me £3.99

No you’re right £3.99 – still cheap enough for wall to wall Olympics.  Just went on Discovery+ website and signed up

… Personally I don’t take a wallet with me most of the time – only take a wallet/cards when it would be a massive ball ache if phone payment wouldn’t work – on a big night out etc.  I just use my phone.  I have an emergency couple of tenners in my climbing bag tho – and when I’m out on my bike

Cash handling creates costs for banks as well.  The more business cash being banked the more staff etc needed to handle it.  Those costs are passed onto customers of the bank one way or another

We’ve had this before because me and Mrs OD are sport Billys – making sure we have sufficient cover for mountain biking (just XC tho), rock climbing (actually on rocks!), surfing, horse riding (Mrs OD not me) – then getting onto ski and snowboarding – chuck in cover for Canada and USA.

Obsessive reading of small print and belt and braces on cover for us

I go to a really good sports physio who also is a climber so sympathetic to desire to carry on climbing through and beyond injuries

… I spoke to soon. Prime have just upped the intrusive advert ratio on me…

Can’t believe how intrusive the adverts were in Gen V

I was thinking the other day how few adverts we get in Prime – I think one advert across the whole season of Fallout.  Same on Disney+ basic subscription very few adverts during Shogun and nothing watching a film eg Pretty Things so far.

I had a quick Google and this seems to be a thing – some people get like loads of ads and some don’t.  Maybe it’s because we don’t watch a huge amount on either platform

oooh tempting – I’ve got an old Pixel 6 that I can trade too.  Looks like it’s a £54 trade in for the phone and a £150 “bonus” on top.  6 still works fine though and I was planning to use it til it broke or became unusable

This is what is says in my packet of sumatriptan. And the Neurologist said to take it as soon as get the aura. I am not a doctor though. Interesting that it is different to the NHS advice, and Mayo clinic as well.  I’ll have to look into why this is different

The trigger for me is the release of stress –  if I’ve been very stressed eg with big work deadline – then after I deliver I can get a migraine alongside the release of stress.  Also just being very tired from overwork or over training.

The impact for me isn’t as bad as for your wife, but I was prescribed sumatriptin which I take as soon as I get the aura starting.  It much reduces the symptoms and the neurologist said that it stops the symptoms becoming an ingrained response to the migraine triggers

I pretty much had this – different sport but similar symptoms.  As did Mrs OD a few years earlier.  Both sent by GP for full bloods and I also had a chest x-ray

Mrs OD – vitamin D deficiency (also same issue for a couple of our friends) and I think low iron as well.  Huge vitamin D supplements to start then just normal vitamin supps on going

For me everything came back ok and we concluded it was probably a combination of overtraining and impact of stress/anxiety.  I’m fine now my main stressors are much reduced – work and dealing with my mother’s death/estate.  Reading around this and listening to lots of climbing sports science podcasts the term for this is allostatic load.

So yes – get the bloods done

I have just started a degree course in Physics so I can study quantum mechanics – I find it fascinating as it’s so counter intuitive as we experience a Newtonian universe on a day to day basis.

I already have a degree in Material Science and we covered quite a lot of physics but it was 35 years ago and I was mainly drunk

Fitbit app is free – the nutrition bit has got a pretty comprehensive food database which breaks stuff down between calories, macros etc.  you can build custom meals from ingredients for stuff you cook regularly and scan barcodes as well
