A very interesting interview on Radio 4 News at One yesterday with an ex-policeman. He said that all police watch each other’s backs, irrespective of right or wrong, and that any officer who cried foul would be ostracised by his colleagues. Not his exact words, obviously, but close. So we have a real cop culture issue here, and not much comfort to those poor innocent sods languishing in jail as a consequence of all this!

A member of my old running club ran the London Marathon while suffering from a very bad cold. He collapsed on the course and was hospitalised for two weeks with a heart rate of 200+. He recovered, but never ran again.

I’m putting spikes in and bolt in the posts, means I can then unbolt in the future and swop out and no more digging. 3 week date for panels round here, so its all dug out and waiting.

Hope you are using good quality spikes, as I’ve seen some rust through before the fence posts need replacing!

Had to destroy a deer once that had broke it’s leg trying to jump and got caught between two fences. It’s sad to do but they are so panicy it’s best to be quick once the decision has been made.

Anyone remember the case of an off-duty policeman who ran over a rabbit? The rabbit was writhing around in the road, so the guy reversed back over it’s head to put it out of its misery, apparently. Sad news, OP, but I’ve been to lots of funerals of running club friends over the years, from 31 to 70 years, and sadly I have to conclude that being fit doesn’t make us immortal.

The FTSE didn’t lose much today and the markets are usually right, although I’m keeping a close watch for a good buying opportunity (“buy on the sound of cannons”) :-)

In my early twenties I often had styes on my eyes and a few bum boils exactly as you described. I then took up running, became a vegetarian and cut out refined sugar. The sugar thing was the key, I believe, and I have had neither skin problem since.

I had two (out of a planned three) unpleasant root canal treatments on a back tooth. Unfortunately, towards the end of the second session my dentist broke his file, leaving a bit in the root. I could tell he was seriously peed off at this stage, especially when he proceeded to give me three options:

Extraction, go private, or he could refer me to the Leeds teaching hospital where, presumably, students could have a go at it.

Obviously, he felt giving good NHS treatment wasn’t worth the extra effort.

I went for the extraction, but I hate the gap in my teeth, even though it isn’t visible, even when I smile.

I have a new dentist now, obviously!

You know, I never really understood why that was such a compelling reward. Given the option of eternal life with 72 virgins, or with three or four right trollops, I know which I’d be opting for.

Trollops :-) Hadn’t heard that expression in years. Anyway, trollops ( preferable Yorkshire trollops ) get my vote over 72 virgins any day of the week!

Hey, cfinnimore, 27 is really young for arthritis-linked knee pain, I think! My family history related arthritis problems didn’t start until my late 40s. So get some good medical advice, and good luck. Avoid private pyhsios, they’ll only take your money for short term relief. BTW, I can’t run anymore, which was my main competitive sport, but cycling is no problem at all.

Run slow; aim to feel as good at the end of your training run as you did at the start. Keep doing that and your speed will gradually pick up without you noticing it.
