Try Keighley, Dewsbury, Batley or Bradford if you happen to be a middle class Guardian reader and truly believe in multiculturalism :-)

Sorry, but I can’t understand why anyone would buy such a small screen nowadays, except maybe for the kitchen. Most modern 55/60″ TVs are wafer thin and if you hang them on the wall are completely unobtrusive when turned off, and the picture quality in HD is sensational. Of course, if your house is full of antiques and the sort of junk they sell on the Antiques Road Show you might have a problem with my comments!

I was considering Bradfield, but I wonder how many cars the local lanes can accommodate. I think the website writers may have underestimated the potential popularity of this location.

Bamboo fibre in its unadulterated form has many useful properties when used in a garment
such as corsets – you wouldn’t want to make socks out of bamboo fibre. A lot of the clothing sold as ‘bamboo’ (pretty much any clothing you’d think to wear next to your skin or on a bike) is made from a compound extracted from bamboo with nasty environment polluting and gender-bending chemicals to create a plastic that can be spun in a similar fashion or nylon. You can make it from any woody material, whether you start with bamboo or anything else is immaterial – you couldn’t tell the difference. In fact I doubt you could prove of disprove that any viscose garment had been bamboo once. And given the sudden popularity, and therefore the mark up, of viscose-renamed-as-bamboo your really have to wonder if every carrying a cardboard and potato print eco-swing-ticket really was panda food once.

I thought we were in some sort of agreement here in respect of viscose, and the misrepresentation of bamboo as an eco- friendly fibre in its viscose form. However, I hope you might agreed that bamboo fibre in its natural form has certain anti-microbial properties.

Just buy viscose or rayon socks – exactly the same stuff only cheaper

    Correct, see above! ^^^^^^

.Rayon? Does that exist these days?

Bamboo fibre can be turned into viscose (rayon) in the same way that any cellulosic fibre can – wood pulp, for example. Bamboo fibre in its unadulterated form has many useful properties when used in a garment. However, producing viscose fibre is not an environmentaly friendly process and its production has conveniently been moved to the Third World. If you are purchasing bamboo viscose it isn’t really bamboo at all.

My running training partner used to consume lots of this stuff. He ended up with a racing heart rate (tachycardia). I wouldn’t exactly point the blame at this caffeine laden drink, but I wouldn’t touch it.

Not read all the thread, but I have been a vegetarian for 30 years (for health reasons) and in that time been the subject of many jokes about my diet, which were actually borderline insults in many cases. I’m with Junkyard on this one!

Hey, zippykona, nice idea but are you serious? My dentists are long gone. Who would we be claiming against, the NHS?

Do you remember when we used to be able to work with asbestos?

I remember my father servicing the drum brakes on his Ford Anglia and brushing the accumulated asbestos dust out of the drum for us all to inhale – happy days!

Oldboy, do you think we were victims and how much money can we claim?

Maybe we could use the same lawyers currently acting for 60s/70s TV star sex abuse victims :-) Let’s start with £10,000 per tooth and see how it goes!

Mouth full of fillings here. If you grew up through the 60s/70s, dentists drilled and filled for fun, or payment from the government! Most youngsters I know have no fillings despite eating sugary foods every day – must be the flouride.

I live in Cambridge, which is very multi-cultural and pretty harmonious. On my walk into town I pass a Mosque, a turkish coffer shop (full off Turks), a Chinese supermarket (serving the Chinese community), a Korean super market (serving the Korean community) etc. Everyone seems to get on fine, but then it’s a prosperous town..

I’m sure Cambridge is a lovely place to live, but if you walked around any of the above towns (especially after dark) I doubt you would have the same point of view about multiculturalism.

Tell me this thread is a spoof, please.

My thoughts, entirely. Anyway, since we are being silly, I think Farage may end up being the best Prime Minister we never had.

Not just Bradford. Oldham, Blackburn, Burnley, Rochdale, etc, etc…

All about as racially and culturally integrated as apartheid era Johannesburg. Separate communities where, despite being many generations in, virtually no integration whatsoever has taken place. Separate communities leading parallel lives.

…..you haven’t mentioned Batley and Dewsbury, and we haven’t even started on the Midlands. Good post, Binners, I really wonder which perfect world some of the contributors on here actually inhabit.

Until quite recently, I had a 17″ 1998 Kona Hei Hei. I’m 5’8″, with disproportionately long legs, and it fitted me perfectly, but I do prefer small frames so I can adjust the fit through the seatpost height and stem length.

Well, if enough people do that it may lead to the mainstream party policies shifting in a UKIP-ish direction.

Is that the kind of thing you’re after?

    Err … why not?

I voted UKIP in the European elections (just to scare the mainstream parties) and Conservative in the locals. I know I may get barred from this neo-Marxist forum as a consequence, but I’ll risk it! :-)

Hardwood stairs would be a good choice, and possibly add value to your property. Not sure about the twill, though, but obviously anything without a pile won’t have a pile to compress :-), but again, consider the choice of fibre.

There really isn’t a solution, apart taking your shoes of as you enter the house! A polypropylene carpet could be vigorously cleaned on a regular basis. The colour afterwards would be like new, but the compression would still be there, I’m afraid.

    oldboy

It’s all about the fibre, not the pattern or type of carpet. Polypropylene pile is completely stain resistant – you can even bleach it – but it doesn’t recover well from compression. That would be my choice for a home with young children, if that is your situation (?)
