    Did everyone pro-actively install Lollipop?

Not been prompted to install it yet on my Nexus 7 (2013), wondering if I will get the chance to postpone the update when it does arrive.

    Small market these days though.

I’m part of that market. Don’t want those though.

    Dunno why…

I get the same thing. Possibly because the start isn’t so important in endurance events as it is in shorter races, the pace isn’t so high and you’ve got more time to make up for any mistakes?

Can’t comment on road races though as never done one.

My first few (XC) races saw me getting overtaken by small children whose race started sometime during my second lap. Not the youth riders, these were U12s!

Fortunately after a few goes I got ‘fast’ enough that I was spared that indignity – or maybe they just changed the scheduling :)

Anyway – as already said, no-one really cares if you’re a first-timer, we’ve all been there. Best way to improve rapidly is to race – good luck!

This is just training for me rather than something I’m targetting so it will be a good scenario to try some disciplined pacing.

    That’s what I’m kidding myself too ;)

Either way, it will make a nice change from 4hrs, after doing that for every series since its inception!

Was kind of looking forward to the later start too – until the new start times were announced :(

We can skulk (and sulk) around at the back of the pack together then!

I don’t think I’ve actually ever done a 2hr race before. No doubt I’ll try and pace it either like a 1hr race, or a 12hr race, or perhaps some inappropriate mix of the two :)

Some quick boys riding the 2 hour anyway

Are you including yourself in that? ;)

I’m looking forward to getting smashed by most of my team-mates, including one on a fatbike, for which my excuse will be that I’m “training”.

2hr Vets for me this year.

Looking forward to 3 rounds of 2 hours instead of 4 rounds of 4 hours last time round – that destroyed me for the rest of the season!

In that case, why not? :)

Personally I don’t like playing with ornate chess sets, nothing better than yer staunton style sets for playing with imo.

I prefer the pieces to be as instantly recognisable as possible – otherwise the brain is wasting time trying to work out which piece is which, rather than what move to make.

No harm in getting a board with notation, particularly for helping beginners. As with the piece design, there’s enough to think about without making it harder!

Saw this[/url] a couple of days ago.

Don’t know much about it, but the daily climbing stats look fairly daunting for a week-long stage race.

Poor quality recording but this is my fave:

They certainly are – I paid well over that for mine 2nd hand. 15mm Twinshot I can thoroughly recommend.

DT Swiss XMM 100 – vastly better than the Fox 32 FIT CTD that came specced on my race bike. Stiffer, far less prone to diving.

So why aren’t the Mods dealing with the rule breakers then? Theres at least three ads with lazy links that haven’t been deleted as the rules state they will be.

Have you reported the posts? The moderators don’t read every single one.

Grade 1 every few weeks, otherwise it just grows into a dense curly hedge that no amount of hair product can control.

I’m not sure Gee’s Surrey 100 ever actually got raced did it? Cancelled due to bad conditions, and never rearranged, at least not publicly.

Or maybe I just wasn’t told

Unfortunately for many people – myself included – it was the sort of event you’d do once.

Really glad I did it – but the long trip up from the south, the amount of fire-road and the midges meant that it was only ever likely to be a “just to say you’ve done it” for me.

Plus the fantastic weather (2010) meant I didn’t really want to push my luck after hearing the horror stories from 2009!

I’d imagine that, by 2013, pretty much everyone who wanted to “just say they’d done it” had done so – hence the low entry.

I am interested in the ROW research paper – however it is quite a long paper and I don’t have much spare time, so I haven’t finished reading it yet. Hence I haven’t commented on the thread either.

To be honest, by the time I’ve finished reading it, I’ll have forgotten where I found out about it, so I probably won’t comment on the thread at all.

Lack of replies doesn’t necessarily mean lack of interest!

I’ve got a set of XT pedals, and one pair of shoes do this and another set don’t. So I think it probably is worn cleats after all.

Rocket Rons are fine for the Gorrick venues. They are what I used for all of last winter’s Brass Monkeys races and they were all pretty grim weather. The type of soil there doesn’t need full-on mud tyres, it is sandy, not clay. Mud tyres will just drag horribly.

Haven’t been to Thetford for a few years, but from what I remember it isn’t too dissimilar. In fact, that’s the reason I haven’t been for a few years – a long way to go for similar terrain to what’s on my doorstep!

I’d be interested if they did work. No idea if they do though.

12 hours on the Downs Link was my dullest effort.

Still, it was meant to toughen me up mentally to keep going when I really couldn’t be arsed, and it seemed to work.

If you’re thinking of doing it, probably don’t bother.

I also bought one of those Topeak jobs.

On the first ride I had to repeatedly stop to tighten up the QR to stop the guard rotating around the seatpost. Eventually I rode down a bumpy descent and at the bottom I found that I only had the QR and half the bracket left, the rest of the bracket and the guard itself were somewhere on the hill.

When returning the remains to the shop, I was told I had overtightened it and it was all my fault. My suggestion that it wasn’t fit for purpose fell on deaf ears. Fragile junk – avoid. Bought a Crudcatcher instead and that is fine.

Oh right – yes that is definitely smoother than I remember!

For what it’s worth, I loved the Grwyne Fawr ride linked above. But it’s a proper old school big day out in the hills, with a carry up Y Das and lots more climbing besides.

It also helped that I did it during the long, hot, dry spring of 2011, with stunning views and no bogs!

Yep, Max is very helpful indeed!

I guess Wingnut are a very small outfit.

I want to deal with inconsiderate, selfish idiots, not careful, considerate and responsible mountain bikers.

So why the call to ban all of them then? By the same logic, do we ban all walkers from the woods just because some of them are there to vandalise and take drugs?

Cheers. Found it in the FAQs online.

Looks like you also have to send a form back to them to actually activate the cover. I should probably do that :)

I topped up the cover offered to regular account holders to cover me biking abroad, at a cost of £40 for the year.

How did you do this Burchy? Is it the Hazardous Activities upgrade? Must admit I’ve not really read through the travel cover letters they’ve sent me very carefully.

Well I didn’t talk to Wingnut either, I went through Roughrideguide. Maybe they can help?

Good to hear dbukdbuk – I’m very tempted by the ‘dale, especially as my LBS is a dealer! Just doing due diligence really, to see what else is around :)

Would probably ditch the Ralphs when they wear out (or rip the sidewalls). Not so bothered about getting a huge tyre in the front as I might well put a sus fork on – I have a spare fork sitting in the shed. Hence why I want a rigid fork, or more accurately don’t want something specced with a crap sus fork that I would swap straight out.

Have had a bit of EBB grief in the past though…

As nuke says, they were in business in the summer.

I ordered a pack from Roughrideguide only to find that the last one had just gone, so they ordered another one for me and got Wingnut to mail it to me direct to save time. This was at the end of July.

Nice find. Much faster and more user friendly than the painful Hants and Surrey definitive map pages.

Shame it doesn’t have the OS 1:25000 layer, but that’s only a minor niggle.

How many teachers does minicat have in order for this to be achievable ?

19 is the minimum if we are rounding to the nearest percentage. 18/19 will suffice, 17/18 won’t ;)

Train to Portsmouth, take your pick of the ferries to Ryde or Fishbourne, then hike round the Isle of Wight.
