Will DEFINITELY be getting one for next year. Drove to the Pyrenees and back on my own last week. Was getting a bit tired of having to sit on the handbrake and reach across like some kind of fat, un-flexible contortionist.

I had a ST, love love loved it. No idea what engine the newer ones have, mine had the 2.5 Turbo, and whilst the 5 cylinder rumble was pure joy…it did like a drink and I’d often average mid-twenties on the mpg side of things.

Correct me if i’m wrong, but the GTi has a 4 cyl 2.0 turbo – which i’m assuming will be a lot less thirsty than the ST. Wont have the same rumble/howl though…

the chaotic jumble of topics is the secret of this forum’s success.

+1 and I genuinely believe it too.

If there were different subsections I’d never bother to check them individually; I like to just click on ‘Forum’ and have a scan through all the lovely random threads that have been posted. It pleases me that they vary from “What tyres for…” to “BabyTrackWorld Advice please..” – and I read both types! :-)

Lots of the usual knee jerk reactions from those who see cycling as a god given right.

Comments like this always annoy me:

Motorists shouldn’t ‘force their way past’ they should be patient and pass when it’s safe. If that takes several minutes then tough, leave earlier or take a different route.

Lots of words like “should” “shouldn’t” being used here. Yes they SHOULDN’T force their way past, but they DO. That doesn’t help the poor sod who SHOULDN’T be in intensive care after that car who SHOULDN’T have forced his way past actually DID force his way past taking out a load of other riders in the process. (This poor ‘sod’ is actually hypothetical..)

blokes in suits and women wearing slight summer clothes. Not fair.

Dont start me on that. Men are pretty much limited to wearing shirt/trouser/shoes combo here, not much else fits the policy. However with weather like this, some of the ladies in our office have rolled into work like they’re just strolling home from a day at the beach!

A group of boys in a Cardiff high-school wore skirts the other day to school because they werent allowed shorts. Mildly tempted to do the same… or maybe not.

From that point it’s a major interval session/obstacle course/hazard avoidance ride

Fair play, that looks like one hell of a commute!!

A lot of places will buy you out of an existing contract if you take out a new one with them. I think Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U do it anyway?

24hrs late with a FlexiPlus!? Not very flexible then!

I think Mackem was referring to a standard ticket, not a flexiplus.

Anyone doing the Cardiff Night Ride on Saturday? If it wasn’t for the faff of having to get back from Swansea, I’d probably be up for it. May end up doing half, and just riding back or something.

Does anyone make some ACTUAL security skewers? E.g. in the same way that alloy wheels have a locking wheel nut, you wouldnt be able to use a 5mm allen key but you’d need something along the lines of a ‘special’ key.

EDIT: a quick search answered my question.

    Thanks guys :-)

Don Skene has a 100% hit-rate so far! Shame its the other side of town from me (I’m in Canton). Probably give the Bikeshed a try – I remember popping in there for a browse one day and they seemed really helpful.

I haven’t personally come across this, however it MASSIVELY grates on me that ‘British’ Standards (e.g. BS10012) are written full of americaniZed spellings.

Tredz in South Wales charge £20 per hour. Mine lasted an hour and a half, and virtually everything was changed – so so much better.

Literally best £30 ever spent (and yes I know this doesnt really help you in West Yorks, but thought I’d share anyway :-) )

    but on a road bike?

If a car pulls out right in front of me while I’m doing 30mph, I want to be able to stop. On a 5p piece. Regardless of the bike.

Maybe because i’ve always ridden mtb’s and have only just got a road bike, but I literally HATE how poor the brakes seem to be on the road bike, especially in the wet. The sooner I can afford to do something about it the better!

it has a bicycling specific function that highlights dedicated bicycle lanes, bike friendly roads and trails.

This is on the current version of Google Maps – or is it different on the new one?

It sounds like I have a lot to learn other than jumping onto a bike and pedalling lol.

I disagree. Jump on a bike, and start pedalling. Simples.

You’ll learn everything else that you need to know in time.

Enjoy, and welcome to the ‘club’. :-)

Charge Spoon’s are £18.48 from Tredz with free delivery…. I’m in dire need of a new saddle and was going to go down the route of being fitted for one in one of the Selle Italia fitting centres. However, for the sake of £18, it’s got to be worth a punt..

I need to introduce more midweek riding from the City centre rather than relying on trail centres so following this with interest…

    Anyone done this?
    Many thanks T

Have no helpful advice I’m afraid, however anyone that has a friend like you is pretty damn lucky, hats off to you sir, and good luck :-)

On a more serious note has anyone ever actually met a gay mountain biker?

Well you can all say you’ve (virtually) met one now. :-)

Ironically, I’m not a mincer on the bike either.

    something bog-standard like Deore

I bought some Deore’s to replace the parallel linkage XT’s that finally gave up the ghost. Not even comparable in terms of performance sadly :( But on the plus side, they were only £12.
