[tl:dr] vaccines make polyclonal or wide ranging antibodies that take out many sites on the spike protein. Resistance is possible but it’s very early days.

    I know this.

There have been some moderate reductions in the effectiveness of seasonal flu vaccines between the time they were in R&D to the time they were being distributed though, hasn’t there? I can’t remember what paper it was that I was reading – I’ll see if I can dig it out.

I don’t think now is the time to be telling ourselves “oh it’ll probably be alright – most mutations that cause vaccine inefectivity take a few years to occur”

You know as well as me it’s just a roll of the dice (probability) – just because it usually happens along in that timeframe doesn’t make it true for every case.

Kent has been in T3 since nationwide lockdown ended.

Seems like it didn’t work. We were blaming the Kentish for acting poorly but it seems that was unfair now that a new strain has been found responsible

    Posted

Was it Kent that drove this or London though? If it was spreading in Kent rapidly under Tier 3 then the shit is really going to hit the fan.

Watch every nation on the planet ban people from entering from the UK.

This isn’t good – there’s no evidence yet that it will reduce the effectiveness of the vaccines but I wouldn’t rule it out.

Boris should have put the South into Tier 3 along with the rest of us. The **** did they expect, encouraging the highest density part of the UK to carry on using the tube and going out for a drink.

And you think you had the last laugh? 🙂 It’s almost like the teacher, working with a lazy boy (weren’t we all?), worked out that stick rather than carrot was the required medicine for you 😉

edit – 2 teachers, identical responses within a second of each other. It’s almost like it’s a ‘method’. Who knew!

No, she didn’t like me. I was doing well before she gave me the predicted D’s. The head of Maths, when I asked to be put in the top set essentially told me to do one against the advice of my very nice middle set Maths teacher. Subsequently I got something ridiculous like 97 percent in my final paper.

Lots of the teachers were complete tools, but I do realise that was partly down to it being a rural comp with a bit of a villagey vibe to it where teachers would take a disliking to you if they didn’t like your family.

The foundation degree that led into my undergraduate was brilliant, unlike the above posters experience… it was designed in a way that eased you into how to study at university. So I didn’t have the same issue of being in for a shock that the others here who swanned through school had.

Yeah that’s what I got from my English teacher as well, I was told I was going to get D’s – all my coursework pieces were A/A*s and I ended up with a good solid A. Yeah, **** you Miss haha.

    Rant over.

I loved uni, that was the first time I felt teachers/lecturers got me and the first time I felt like I belonged somewhere. I dropped out of my A-Levels for various reasons and then a year later managed to convince a university to give me a place on a foundation degree, it was the best choice I’ve ever made despite A-levels being free. I’m eternally grateful to the course tutor who showed me around the campus, then took my application seriously, then stuck me in some extra academic skills classes and some more advanced maths modules in the engineering department.

I value education as well, I’m sure Steve does – what I didn’t and still don’t value was my secondary school education.

Unless you are doing a vocational degree most uni courses are not about the content. They are about learning to learn, to research, to argue a point, to fail, to jump through hoops without touching the sides. To learn to do group work and be collaborative. Secondary education is pretty much the same only at a lower level.

This is what I got out of university as well, something that could have been taught to me when I was 11. Although of course, it was also about content as I studied and now work within a science based discipline.

It would be impossible for me to have the career I have, and therefore the life I and my family have, without the education I’ve received.

I on the other hand, still managed to go to university – then taught myself an entirely new although indirectly related subject and have managed to receive an offer for a masters in that new subject.

I hated every **** minute of secondary.

Anyway having played Cyberpunk on my GTX 1080 my issues with the game aren’t the graphics or performance, it looks really quite good and runs well on medium settings at 1440p.

It’s that the game is neither a proper RPG with actions that matter or a Far Cry 5 open world shooter with good gun play. Right now I’m much more into Co-Op Far Cry 5 with my wife, the gun play is much better and the tactics are more varied.

I took the plunge, it’s running pretty well on my GTX 1080 – way better than it did on Stadia with my 300mbs fibre connection. I believe Sony removed Cyberpunk from the store in retaliation for CDPR putting the onus for refunds on Sony, Sony have form for allowing some very buggy or outright broken games to be sold on their store.

Elons been trolling CD Projekt Red on Twitter, someone posted this in reponse.

Steve, you’re probably just a natural small state libertarian socially and maybe fiscally slightly left like me? God knows why our ancestors decided to stick around here instead of getting on a boat to the States.

We could always do both. Can we set mumsnet on that skiing forum? Basically bait mumsnet into posting in that thread and then sit back and watch the lols fly?

Break out the whisky and cigars boys, we’ve got a flame war to plan.

So, are we all heading over to Snowheads and liven up that thread that was either reposted or ‘copied’ as the generalist alleges?

I’m up for a good old fashioned inter forum troll.

To be honest, I think she sounds way better singing like a 30’s/40’s Jazz singer than singing like a female version of Chris Cornell. Her PMJ recordings floored me, she is a **** awesome crooner.

I learnt **** all in secondary school apart from how all but two of my teachers were cockwombles, that authority figures were to be distrusted, that I could learn 2-3 years worth of information in the six months before my exams and that whilst I was shoved in the middle set for Maths that I was actually good at it.

I find myself in partial agreement with steve, even though he seems to have pissed a lot of you off. I reckon I could have forgone secondary completely and still ended up where I am today, but I was always one of those kids that did things purely for his own benefit in a bloody minded independent fashion – so maybe others wouldn’t do so well with less formal schooling.

As it’s a mancave where you can paint the walls dark and control the light…projector, 75-80 inch TVs just don’t cut it compared to a 120 inch screen. Plus the reflected light is much easier on the eye, oh and they dominate the room less.

No replacement (eg Oleds HDR) for displacement.

My Optoma UHD40 puts out a decent image as well.

21st century option, especially if it’s just for you in the man cave – Oculus Quest 2. You can watch films, netflix, amazon prime and sky sports on the equivalent of a cinema screen for £300. Also takes up no room.

Screen door effect is terrible – and they aren’t very sociable. Good for simulators and not much else.

Company men actually do work, I think you’ll find he’s a contractor/consultant/interim malcontent like me.

I smell a troll as well.

This is technically quite a good one as it’s subtle but will rile up a lot of lefties, the capitalisation in the title and the use of “SAD” at the end gives it away though.

I normally spend the entire festive season in a 2-week long orgy of desperately depraved activity, awash with coke and hookers in a sex dungeon in Amsterdam

You’re wasted up North Binners, it’s so tame up here you should have moved down to London and ran with my old crowd….:D

An ex squaddie turned computer programmer once walked past the concierge and apartment bar with a first violinist from a major American orchestra naked and on a leash.

    I sort of miss London.

But yeah a lot of people have lost jobs, I feel very lucky to still be earning decent money.

Best bank I’ve ever had is the one that doesn’t even have branches. Starling shits all over my Halifax account I used to have and the Santander joint account I have with my wife. No issues whatsoever, when I asked for some signed and stamped bank statements from Starling for my wifes permanent leave to remain application I got them a few days later and they’d been stamped and signed with a wet signature by the CEO! The app is better than the big banks, it’s the best one for visualising your spending, I have three accounts (personal, euro and joint) that I can just bounce money around with a tap or two.

Yeah never going back unless it’s for a mortgage.

The Marines seems like an obvious fit but I’m not sure a bloke who jetskid into the open ocean for a **** with a real woman could go three months on a boat with 500 men (and a handful of women).

Prison is probably deserved, but four weeks seems harsh. Anyhow, he’s clearly missed his calling in life – if he’s mental/stupid enough to do a 4 hours jetski through a freezing ocean followed by a 15 mile hike he should have joined the infantry.

Is anyone else worried that they’re considering reversing the Christmas bubble?

By worry, I mean worry that a sudden reversal after a lot of people have spent money on planning family gatherings (rightly or wrongly) will lead to mass non-compliance at Christmas, with further non-compliance into the New Year as people will feel safer breaking rules in numbers and a complete delegitimization of the governments position?

I think this might be the straw that broke the camels back, that we have to give people time off now for a few days or face public disorder and the rise of a populist party.

Shows you how behind the last gen consoles were – that PS5 video looks about the same as the low setting on PS5. You could buy a budget 500 quid gaming PC that’s actually in stock right now and it’d look as good as that. That’s put me right off the latest gem consoles.

The PS4 one is just terrible!

What’s really funny are the low vs ultra settings comparison videos – there’s barely any difference. Shadows, reflections and draw distances slightly improved but not enough that’d youd notice whilst focusing on playing the game.

So much for full fat raytracing.

Not enough GPUs were manufactured with the release of the 3XXX series to match the demand.

This is only partly true, continental Europe has been getting higher deliveries of 3000 series GPU’s – both Nvidia and the third party board manufacturers have been prioritising the USA and mainland Europe.

I wouldn’t dream of shouting down someone’s different opinion on here, there’s far too many folk that are way cleverer and have more subject knowledge than I do. (Not a high bar, admittedly).

Complains about being compared to a brexiteer then mentions main stream media and cancelling the BBC in the same post…..LOL…..I need to write a book titled “How Everything Became Satire and Stupidity Became Everything”….it’ll be much more interesting than Rosa Brooks book.
