    That’s not cowardice, that’s pragmatism!

I don’t commute anymore by bike, but I did for years and would get close passes etc. I developed a mental test which was: if there was a close pass (and I felt threatened) and say a woman or an unthreatening man was driving, I had the option of approaching the window for a confrontation. I began to ask myself: “if there was a huge skinhead (instead of a woman for example) driving, would I approach and remonstrate?”. If the answer was ‘no’ then I was being cowardly and seeking to confront someone weaker than me. If the answer was ‘yes’, then the pass or incident had been serious enough to make me fear for my life.

I called it the cowards test and never had a subsequent confrontation!

Your course of action was sensible.

    These chaps have it right.
    Gatorskins – vile.
I hired a lovely top end Giant Propel on holiday and it was shod with these. Took the edge off it.

Schwalbe Ones are really good (I’ve had several thousand trouble free miles) and Conti GP400s I had for ages.

Haven’t tried Duranos, but if the guys are saying they’re good, they’re probably good.

    Nice build! Looks great.

First impression was that despite not feeling very heavy and having reasonably light wheels, was slow and heavy. Didn’t much like to accelerate and felt a bit numb

You’ve got Gatorskins on there. The devils tyre! 🙂

There are of course sneaky tricks apparently, that those who kart alot will know about. One is to cover up the carburettor on the entrance to the bend, then at the right point uncover it, fuel will have gathered in the carburettor chamber and you get a big whaj of fuel going through at once and a momentary burst of acceleration

Wait….wasn’t this what happened in Mario Kart on the SNES?

So…you introduced a predator into a formerly happy cat’s home and are now upset that it’s miserable and has to go and continue a worse life elsewhere?

    The Bridge.
I could not believe what I was seeing.
Compelling and pretty heartbreaking documentary about jumpers on the Golden Gate Bridge.

    Completely agree. Great doc.

I need to renew the the “putty” that sits between the wooden window frames and the stonework. It’s a sort of murky red colour and quite a coarse texture. What the heck is it?

And remember the lad wearing this familiar-looking mask?

    I remember. Christ. 🙂

There’s a theory knocking around that at least one of the realities is Laura’s dream.

What troubles me a bit are all the totally loose ends. Balthazar Getty’s character, the bit where Bobby sees the weid zombie like kid in the car, the zombie like dude in the cell. What the hell was that about? I mean, I don’t mind, but…..

    *spoilers here*

I believe the theory of the permanent mobius loop – the one that Phillip Jeffries puffed out (!) to coop.

He was always trying to save Laura, but always failing (leading her away from her death in the original narrative) but losing her in the woods. And then this was repeated – leading her to her house. That’s a very simplified version. The stuff with Diane in the hotel was really creepy.

What I loved about the return to her house and the ‘new’ owners was that they were the ‘Tremont’s’ and prior to that the ‘Chalfont’s’. If you remember Fire Walk With Me – cooper investigates the Deer Meadow trailer park and there is a missing trailer (where Agent Desmond disappeared). Carl rodd tells Cooper that it was owned by the ‘Chalfont’s – two lots of them’……but also the Tremont’s.

Anyway……I blimmn’ loved it. Best thing I’ve seen on TV.

No, I think many people weighing 15st would be offended. It’s just plain offensive. But hey, it’s a forum so feel free to carry on being a cock.

Well, Fifeandy was just stating an opinion, right or wrong. You are the one using invective.
    Do you weigh 15 stone?

I’ve just found 4,000 petrol estates on Autotrader, which is much fewer than the 24,000 diesels, but still quite a lot.

    Here’s a nice, sensible petrol Passat estate….

Loads of those are diesel (from that link)

I dont think they made Passat’s with petrol engines in recent years. I had a 2.0tdi through work long term and thought it was excellent.

Yeah exactly! So here’s the thing: WHEN are they going to start putting petrol engines in for the UK? Surely it’s easy just to smash in a 2.0 TSI thingy into it? And the same for all the other manufacturers.

Yeah, it does seem that way, High 5. Part of me just thinks wait till more petrols trickle through. I quite liked the look of the Passat estate but, again, no petrols in my search. There was a newish passat hybrid on but that was £34,000. 😯

Thank you, STW hivemind. Great opinions and information, as usual.
I am not surprised by the lack of petrol engines in the area we are looking at, but it makes things a touch harder. I will keep looking. *grumble* I still find the price of newish cars painful *end grumble*
TBH I still drive a 14 year old Toyota Avensis in taxi beige. It refuses to die. Someone actually hailed me down on the street in Bristol the other day, but that a story for another time.

Dragon – was thinking more like either large estate or SUV (like X-trail); I must add that I am not a huge fan of SUV’s but there’s, y’know, some pressure.

Steve – the Honda petrol CRV might be a good shout actually.

In favour of petrols….I guess what I mean is, are there petrol engines which are as practical as diesel engines for bigger cars? Or are these in the works to be introduced in like 5 years….? Interesting point on spec, Steve.

    Evidence?

They say they don’t. They’d be very publicly breaking lots of laws if they did.

Meh – maybe not listening in, but they are selling all your queries to 3rd parties, effectively monetising you. You did read the TOS, right? People have different levels of comfort with this transaction.

I’ve enjoyed this whole season. I look forward to it every week and have not been disappointed. Some bits have been a little slow, but when Lynch is on, he’s really on.
It’s like watching a puzzle – and completely different to anything on TV. You don’t know if seemingly weird irrelevant moments are in fact, important to the plot.

And Philip Jeffries is now a teapot.

Agree with you, Chapaking, Fire: Walk with Me is a really tough film to watch. I’ve tried recently, but it freaks me out and I last saw it in the late 90’s.

Apple is a computer hardware company, using software and services to sell their wares. Google is an advertising company, using software and services to sell their wares.

    Good point, Rachel.
I would also add, Google is also a massive data collection agency and seller of data to 3rd party data collection businesses.
Worth considering. Same for Facebook et al. It must be lovely having a business where billions of people create free content for you to sell.
I don’t think SRAM or Shimano have managed that yet.

Very interesting….so, realistically, if you were a committed member of a more evangelical C of E church with a household income of 60k, they’d expect £6k PA from you? I mean, i respect people’s right to do whatever they want with their money, but do people actually pay that??

We had several cocker spaniels when I was growing up. Females…..they we’re nice dogs but prone to just running off into hedgerows chasing rabbits and birds. I lost count of the amount of hours spent calling for them. Sometimes we would just have to go home and they would turn up after crossing roads. Not good.

Once, when we had mother and daughter, we were waling on the Quantocks and they just went….gone. They were out for 48hrs eventually found by a farmer and returned home. Again, not good.

it occasionally gets mentioned on here, but Mr Money Moustache[/url] sets it straight. The scales might fall from from your eyes.

Agree with the guy who thinks PCP on cars is going to be the next PPI.

I’ve been there, but I think car and finance companies are targeting the most vulnerable in society – those on the middle class treadmill.

My brother in law has a well paid job, a large Audi and wears a fake Rolex GMT.

I have a battered Seiko SKX007 on an oyster strap, but I think it’s cool.

David Lynch wear a bright yellow Swatch, I saw in a documentary about him the other day.

There’s a moral in there somewhere.

    Wally Brando.

I loved that bit too. 🙂

The icepick wielding (new) dwarf was odd.

I liked the inability of Balthazaar Getty’s character to control his arm. He’s clearly been hanging out with the others above the convenience store.

Still running 6600 on my winter bike. It shifts better than the 6800 on my race bike, that shifts better than 6700 on my old race bike (6700 really was poor).

I totally agree – but here’s a question for you:

Is Dura Ace 7900 better than Ultegra 6800?
I know ‘better’ is hard to quantify…but, y’know…..

    Very 80’s.

    Apart from that. Yeh, ok.
I’m still running 6700 from 8 years ago. Might be time to upgrade 🙂

If you fancy ‘north’ Bristol and anywhere you’d actually want to live (Redland, Westbury On Trym, Stoke Bishop, maybe Clifton – but that’s student central, Bishopton too (I guess) and you like period property (or any property) have a look at the prices…..steep. 3 bed semi or terrace way past £600k now, if you can get in the queue to view them.
Anything bigger then way more. And not Clifton, thats a ton more.
But….they are very nice areas to live in.

I was a day pupil at an independent school from the age of 3….we had boarders at age 7. Quite a lot of ’em. My memories of them are that there was a quite a lot of bullying and no female figures to ‘go to’ when they were upset; just a matron. They would tell me about crying themselves to sleep. But they just had to get on with it, really. This was in the 80’s. They seemed to have a better time of it at senior school at 13 when it was Co Ed.

The boys who boarded all the way through were definitely more messed up that the day pupils who had a sense of ‘normality’ from home, I think.

I only know one boarder from that time who, weirdly, lives near me. He was an only child was sent to prep school at 9 , so his parents could improve and enjoy their media careers. His mother was resentful that she’d taken time off after having him and her career had suffered ‘because of him’ – his words, not mine.

Sadly, his dad died of cancer when he was 15 and he never really got to know him because he was away at boarding school. Mother died when he was 35. He’s married with kids and very nice, but has a kind of sadness about him and resents being sent away.

Personally, I wouldn’t dream of sending my children to boarding school. Its a very very strange thing to do.

Watched 1 + 2 and thought it was fabulous. But then I have been waiting for 25+ years to see some sort of resolution.
I watched every episode of the original broadcast on BBC2 back in ’90, ’91 and it frightened me badly as a 13 year old. But it was utterly compelling and kind of informed a lot of sensibilities i have today in an odd way.

What I like about this new season is it is just unfettered David Lynch / Mark Frost weirdness. No network interference, just the vision of two men played out in TV. Nothing is explained.
    I like that.
