I found out about the caustic soda (lye as the call it in the us) on PB, there is a guy who had a set of SLX polished, but Internet appears sceptical of the use around aluminium, quite a few clip on you tube though.

I’m going to go for it, I’ve got some autosol too, will try and sort photos when done.

So it will be ok providing its in for only as long as is necessary to remove the paint?

I will be extremely causious with goggles etc, will household marigold gloves protect me?

Two Wheels in Stourbridge have a great wheel builder called Baz, normally £20 labour but if you buy spokes + rim, they do a bit of a deal.

XT are a lot cheaper and very powerful, some don’t like how powerful or off/on they are, I love them, when doing DH/going fast loads of modulation.

Not used new saints but used old ones, new XT’s from my opinion are compatible.

+1 on the fact pedal bikes are too big for a 2 year old to jump on, if you buy a quality one resale is good so cost is minimal, compare it swimming lessons excellent value for money!

My daughter was just over 2, she started by just walking with it which is good to get them to feel the weight and control it for getting on/off. As she progressed she started taking strides that got longer & longer until she could raise her feet & roll. Then after more time she got confident & would put her feet up on the chainstays & wiz about. just before she progressed onto the big girl bike I taught her to use the brake.

My approach was to be encouraging but not push her to hard, I let her do it in her own time as I felt the more comfortable she felt the more time she would send on it & the quicker age would learn, as for helping I never touched the bike (other than to help her get on when she was very small) just let her get on with it. I did on occasions get my bike out so she could copy & I feel it does work.

We got her an isla bike for Christmas at 4 1/2 and she has transitioned seamlessly, I was hocked at the fact she pretty much just rode the pedal bike first time, great feeling!

Never seen one in the flesh but surely the build on that YT alone is worth £2700!!

I was of the same opinion 1007, but obviously not taking into consideration lighting or monitor calibration.

Would Chrag be likely to tell me, also do they use RAL in the US?

I think the smaller bikes have components specifically designed by Isla bike (just brought a 16″ for my daughter) to fit, it may well be that the crank is specifically designed by and produced for Isla bike!?

Cheers, what sort of weight is average? I’m a solid 13 1/2 stone without kit.

What’s a draw is the fact I can get a new 2013/2014 set new for the price 2nd hand set of a 2010 Reba!

Trance X is name of the frame, the X0, X1,X2, X3 etc indicates the build, giant made 4 or 5 different complete bikes the X0 was the top build, X4 the bottom. With the X4 you got Tora forks and a cheap giant shock, with the X0 decent Fox forks and a decent fox shock.

You can buy an X0 for £800-£900, an X3 probably £500ish, personally I’d buy a lower end one as the frame is the same (just ensure you get on with the Fox Shock) then you can upgrade, they came stock with a 120 fork but many say they ride better at 140mm.

£1000…2nd hand 2010 Giant Trance X, should be fully loaded for £1k or pick one up for £600-£700 sell the forks and a few other bits then you’ll have £300 (plus what you’ve sold) to upgrade, put a nice set of 140mm forks.

A very good trail bike… But not just a trail bike…

Who gives a monkeys how much money some one has, or has spent on THEIR bike, people work hard to earn it let them spend it as the wish!!! SB66 looks awesome, capable of a multitude of riding, even DH World Cup, my advise would be to speak to LoCo or the like, they’ll sort you out.

Old new stock Five? If they’re avalible or get 2nd hand and get it painted by Orange, will be like and ride like new and you’ll get one well kitted out for £2k!

Both look great, reasonable price if brought 2nd hand new/lightly used however I went for the Thomson as I saw some reports of the Renthal breaking, I prefer the look of the renthal though.

+1 for a Charge Blender. Anywhere between £50 & £100. I had one as a do it all for a few years, super fun, rode lots of 4x and pumptracks on it but ended up transferring the build onto a 2012 Five frame as wanted something FS for longer trail and XC rides.

However can’t wait to get it built back up as a 2nd bike in the spring as a single speed for ripping around and playing on.

    Here’s a pic pre strip…

Get 36 Floats with 1 1/8, only a little over 2kg, weight is worth the stiffness.

Haha…thank you for all the input, some has really made me smile. I’ve already pointed him the direction of the £1500-£2000 2013 bike of the year reviews as well as reviews for some of the suggested.

Some very sensible suggestions which have backed up some of what I thought but I didn’t want to look a jock saying “don’t spend xxx amount on a bike” without logic and a good reasoning.

£1k winter bike would have been an idea but he’ll be out Majorca most of the time so not confined to mucky uk weather, and can get fit over the coming months, although he is gerally quite fit anyway. I think the plan is trip around the island in 3 days so breaking it up a little.

Lives south of Birmingham so any decent shops, please shout up, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind tracking a little distance.

Following some words of wisdom, I’ve pointed him in the direction of £2k bikes and explained this is the point where diminishing returns startbto occur, ive also advised on looking for a bike built for comfort not just a race weapon. Also advise a fit/solid advise from a good store before a test/purchase.

I will also compile a list of all bikes advised on this thread along with comments for further investigation/consideration.

Steve b77 – cheers, midlands based, he will be off to a decent store, he just wanted a heads up.

satchm00 – sorry he’s already got one of these, and has a 2014 model on order http://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/motorcycles/enduro/bmw-r-1200-gs-adventure/gallery.html

Rochey – this is a photo, he said this was £3699 the other £3999 http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/10400550/

    Kuco – **** you

Patriotpro – sorry but get over it, is everybody’s first car a £500 banger just cause you can get one for that? Some people spend £500 some people spend £20,000 (that they don’t have). Anyway see above post, he was pointed in the direction of a £4k bike and was along if it was a good idea. Finally he’s family, not sure about your relationships but if someone in my family asks for help/advise I’m happy to assist.

To all those who have given sensible advise, many thanks and keep it coming.

Babyjack – it was a reply to a mock, didn’t mean to cause offence, I work hard but don’t have big bucks, the guy in question has worked extremely over a long period of time in order to enjoy the fruits of his labour…lets not let the green eyed monster be a reason to mock!

Thank you, it wasn’t that he was insistent on spending £4k more the fact he was pointed in the direction of a bike that was £4k and was happy if that was hat he needed to spend to get a “good un”. He came to me as he knows with Mountain bikes I know the values and will sniff out the very best deals (I have to on my budget).

I will have a look and point him in the direction of the above named bikes to read reviews etc and give him so food for thought!

patriotpro – I understand you viewpoint, please check my history, I ain’t no troll, I know it’s hard to believe but some people have lots of money (whilst I’ve scrounged around buying 2nd hard parts to build my dream AM bike)

EDIT – I’m sorry you have to mock others because you haven’t worked hard enough to be on the same position, wanna try something new & buy the best.
