So all of you that ask for discounts will be happy for your employers to ask for a discount on your salary?

Yes, when ‘negotiating’ my wage package the employer asked my salary expectations…I asked for one figure they offered slightly less like a bike shop I could accept or decline the offer!

Also look at the bigger picture, dealers most probably have quotas whereby the more they sell the better price they get plus they may have to sell an agreed amount in order to remain a dealer, if a few £££ is going to contribute toward securing a deal it is probably a positive action.

No, I’ve never asked for a discount on anything. My car had a price tag on it, that’s what I paid.

Wow…you could have saved yourself some serious money over the years I’ve never met a car dealer/dealership that won’t do a deal.

For all of the people who say “don’t negotiate…LBS’s need to make a living” have you never asked for a discount on anything? Honest not even when buying a car? A house?

Don’t ask…don’t get that’s my moto! I’ve asked for discounts in all sorts or retailers and you’d be surposed at the deals that can be had. LBS’s are no different.

I have a Charge Blender, 2008 – 2013 it was my one and only Mtb not to mention my first ‘proper’ Mtb.

I rode a lot of Mini DH, 4X, BMX tracks for which a Blender is absolutely awesome. I also rose XC and trail, great for the fun bits but I realised after getting my Five last year it is not a great peddler, hense I’m currently looking to change the frame for something more XC orientated for when I’m not on the Five. However for what I’ll get for it I could never bring myself to sell it, it will be a specific pumptrack specific bike one day!

Watching this thread with interest. Started a thread on here Soul or Slackline…after going along to the local dealer I was sold on the idea of a 29er, was keen on Solaris but looking at the options I’m taken by the Sherpa and Salsa too.

Anyway ruled the Salsa out based on 27.2, leaning towards the Shepa as it has a 30.9 seat tube meaning it would be compatable with my current Reverb…sorry to hijack but has anyone ridden both the Solaris and Sherpa for comparison?

Thanks for all the feedback…the title ‘would I be crazy…’ Was based on the fact the Soul is a lot of £££’s for a 26″ if a 29″ is streets ahead and 26″ will be defunct in a few years, I don’t mind spending money but I take a buy once buy right philosophy (can’t afford to be any other way).

I’m super happy with the Five, not saying there aren’t light faster bikes but it’s a joy to ride and that’s what it’s about. I guess what’s started as a I’ll change my HT play bike frame so it is a better more versatile bike has turned into…’if I’m spending that much I’d better get it right!’

I will defo be getting a demo (it’s out this week so will need to wait till next) and I’m sure it will quickly send me in one direction or the other…only downside is if I go damm it it’s a 29″ I like the look of the Sherpa n+1.

    soul 27.5

Defiantly not this…all of the extra cost for what…the emperor’s new clothes…additional cost for vey little gain IMHO

I’m a bit confused by your post as you suggest you would be moving bits over from another 26er but then say the Soul build is more than a Solaris ?

Sorry badly worded, the Solaris would be twice the price of the Soul due to needing new forks/wheels.

As you already have a 5, get the Solaris as it’s more differenter.

This is a big part or the dilemma…having a more different bike is kind of what appeals, but also caused more logistical issues, withy the soul I would be sharing wheels so massive help with storage…decisions decisions!

Go for the soul you won’t regret it if you never try the Solaris.

    I’m thinking this is wise!!

It’ll come down to whether you want to pay to run two different wheel standards – two sizes of inner tube, tyre, fork etc.

It’s not the running cost that concern me but rather the initial outlay. In all honesty I went into this thinking is just spend a few hundred quid on a new frame, a 29″ rolling chassis is just shy of a complete new bike…not really what I want or can afford/justify. However on the flip side I don’t want to spend a load of cash now and then decide down the line to go 29″.

Ok…so demo wise the dealer has said I can take the Solaris out no probs but they no longer have any Souls built as demo bikes so no comparison.

Ridding wise it’s for local XC fun, quite tame really. Trail centres, rougher trails or bigger adventures I’d use my 26″ Five.

I am replacing a Charge Blender so the option of a bit of 4X/pump tracks/messing about would be nice but I’ve decided far from essential. I’ve always been anti 29″ but I know him from old and used to ride BMX with him, we have similar styles (playful) and he was explaining it was much faster in all areas but switch backs.

I run a 17″ Five with 50mm stem, I’ve always run my bikes slightly on the smaller size, the Fives great kinda can’t get enough but wanted HT through the winter for local XC using the Five for where the terrain is a little more fun. Been thinking medium but might need to consider a small, however I wanna run a reverb that can be pretty much slammed…might not happen with a small!?

If I go slackiline I’ll defiantly go 16.5″…

Wallop what height are you what size soul/five do you ride? Also are you comparing TT length of wheelbase?

Not that much, I like to see what I’m getting then have the option to paint it, I get concerned when someone has painted an old frame…what are they hiding??

Plus it could cost anywhere up to £250

    nwill1

Not looked for a Demo yet, I’ll probably be on the look out for 2nd hand if I can get the frame for £250-£300 (which I’ve seen them go for).

My thinking is if it’s a one HT compromise it’ll be Slackline if it’s n+1 and I can have the two it’ll be a Soul and Blender best of all worlds!?

Nice to hear such a good report, how does the steel one compare though!?

The 36’s are at 140 and it has a CCDB…it easily out climbs the Blender hence the longing for something even better than for the local XC rides over summer to build my fitness.

edward2000 I will drop you a mail but pretty sure I would need to go for 16.5 (I’m 5’9″).

As for the 4X/BMX/pumptrack type stuff it’s very rare I get to ride it I suppose it’s a ‘nice to have’ more than essential.

In an ideal world I’d keep the Five, build a Soul and rebuild the Blender but n+1 causes storage issues.

I guess what I’m really thinking is I’d like a Soul but don’t want to lose the Blender, a Slackline would do both but would that be a big compromise for the XC side of things?

I’ll most likely be sticking with the 120mm Reba forks as they’re light and will save on the expenses plus they’re almost as new…

I am thinking that I can almost get a Slackline and Reverb for the price of the Soul, however I am slightly concerned that the Slackline will only climb incrementally better than my Blender in which case there would be no point BUT it might climb a who lot better and of course it gives me the option of the Reverb!!

I’m considering building a new hard tail up but need a reasonably priced (used) frame ideally a Soul or Slackline but all the used frames are 27.2 and I don’t want to build one without a Reverb!

Mines up and down like a yo yo nearly every decent I want the saddle down without this it’s difficult to move freely…there’s a reason DH riders and DJ riders have their seat slammed!

Wellgo MG1. If you shop around you’ll get some for £25ish, very light good platform and shape, various colours, sealed bearings.

Ride with people who can ride what you want to ride…watch them, talk to them then follow them.

Start small…repeat until comfortable…build it up incrementally…each time you get comfortable move it up.

£3k of stock at retail is probably £1500-£2000 at cost so £4.5k of contacts and good will???

Saying that I did sell a cracked frame as ‘spares or repairs’ one time on ebay…it was in capitals in the title and in the description, with detailed photos…the guy brought and paid for the frame then said…”I’ve just noticed it’s cracked…can I still ride it?” He never came back though!

In my experience have it low enough for his feet to be just about flat on the floor and give him time, as he starts to feel comfortable he’ll experiment in his own time and gradually progress.

Agreed dot look dodgy, not putting actual photos up can affect price but if they’re new you don’t need photos…plus if you pay on CC through PP you should be covered if the goods are not as described.
