To right, shop acknowledged and put it right. Willing to forgive this time based on good after service.

The difficulty is, at what point do you stop and think, this is too tight for me to do?

To those calling me a dick…go look in the mirror…to me going on a media forum calling some one a dick is well the action of a dick at best!

Secondly glad you lot don’t work in customer service! Assume you don’t anyway otherwise you probably wouldn’t be able to buy all these expensive bicycles.

So the outcome…yes I was having a rant on here but I know how to approach a situation like this when face to face…

The shop was golden, I explained that I tried to undo both and that they seemed overly tight to me, the top one gave way with much force and the lower rounded.

They managed to get the lower one out and replace the bolt. They informed me that it was way too tight and that no grease had been applied, pretty sure that’s an acknowledge that I was correct and NOT being a dick.

Despite me not being happy their afterservice was superb.

    Have a good day all…I will! :D

zanelad – assuming it’s the same way as the one above that came loose following a ridiculous amount of force being applied!

tjagain – exactly the attitude of today that pisses me off…someone can create a situation through shoddy workmanship but are able to wriggle out of it but putting the blame on the people affected by their shoddy work!

Please explain to me why over a corse of 9 years I’ve never had issue with undoing these bolts and suddenly the two on a stem fitted by said LBS are very very very tight become a problem, tool was good, my technique was good as I was able to undo the top one but even that was punching TV’s limit. In fact a 5.5nm I’m not sure it’s even enough force to round a bolt!?

    nwill1

This is why I’m so angry…I know I have no way of proving it was above the recomended 5.5nm.

For those saying … You rounded it, it was the tool, user error etc, if you’d have taken it back to the shop it wouldn’t have happened.

Can I was how much force should I apply to the Allen key/bolt before thinking…Ill take it back to the shop? 5.5nm is very little force, should I have just given it a little squeeze and those this is tighter than recomended torque I’ll take it back to the shop, no I applied a little more force, and a little more force and a little more and a little more.

No top bolt has come loose it was stupid stupid tight though, I had to give it everything I could, even after it moved (with a masive creak) it was still stupid tight and happened again with a massive creak, even then it was tight enough in my opinion.

To address a couple of the above I understand I rounded the bolt…but guess what!? had it not been over tightened I wouldn’t have rounded it.

What do I want them to do…remove the bolt with out damaging the stem…should it be damaged I’ll be expecting a replacement.

As for how to approach it I’m very good at being polite but assertive…as angry as I am I will not go in with a poor attitude or shouting the odds just politely, quietly and assertively getting it resolved!

Not going to claim that I have some Parktool Allen keys but the fact of the matter is that I’ve had Mtb’s since 2008, before then I was an avid BMXer and had been building my bikes for 10 years before then since the age of 15.

I quickly learnt about how to avoid rounded bolts in the early days and since mountain biking I’ve rounded on torque bolt some years back on a disc since I’ve been mountain biking!

The stem should be tightened to 5.5nm…it’s only been a week and 1/2 2 weeks top…I will not accept that I am at fault.

Today I’ve knocked a larger torx in and tried that and it’s just got worse…there is no way in gods earth that said bolt was torqued to 5.5nm!!!

In response to a couple of the above points…

I could not carry out the service on my forks as there was a suspected warranty issue. The issue was an issue and warranty carried out by SRAM/Rcokshox.

The bike was take into them to service the fork they’ve completed the work, I’m now in the process of stripping the bike to sell the frame form wheels and transfer the rest of the build onto a new bike.

I’m going back Monday and THEY WILL sort the problem. There is no way on this earth they used a Torque Wrench, think it will be as case as above, I know there are some good guys working there but if we probably done by one of the other spanners.

I know some have issues with Thomson but I have 3 stems and had Thomson stems since 2008 and NEVER ever even come close to rounding a bolt, in fact I’ve hardly as much as marked the bolts!!

I have 2 sets of 26″ Pikes and I do really like them but the Fox’s have a good write up and are a bit lighter!

Watching with interest…currently undergoing a similar project…managed to pick up some 24″ hope wheels but come with DMR Motor Digger…look decent it a little heavy.

I looked at some adapters, some seem to have a 5mm each side and a spacer for the brake disc…the Hope one looked…errr?? 10mm offset…might mess with my OCD.

I feel boost will become the new standard and given I’m buying from new I dont want to buy a fork that’s out of date fork before its even on my bike! :?

mboy … Seen you comment a couple of times that Cotic and Stanton 29ers geo has been ‘left behind” compared to the new crop.

Which bikes are you referring to and what are the differences/improvements??

    Rode a 27.5″ Slackline today…blew me away…incredible IMO!

    nwill1

    Haha…just going though similar…

I’ve gone with a custom build!

    XS Cotic frame
    Carbon forks
    24″ wheels
Mixture of choice parts and bits lying around.

Does she need a Thomson seatpost or Deore hydronic brakes? No BUT I’ve already checked the fit and it’ll be good and more importantly when she’s grown again in another great or two I’ll whack some 26″ wheels in and some suspension forks if required!

Totted it up to be costing about £500 (but I’ve gone a bit OTT promising her some shines purple big’s). However the 24″ Isla bike is about £450 and I’d be changing that in 18 months time.

It’s worth it to me though, I enjoy building bikes, she’s finding it fun and she enjoys ridding her bike.

If it doesn’t work out I’ll probably be able to sell it at very little loss!

Pig Face … No where for one second have I said he will win…by all rights he most certainly shouldn’t.

However I just don’t think you can say there is no chance Connor could win…he could.

ATM I can’t see how, just never say never that’s all.

I wouldn’t put much on Conor let alone my house but there are a lot of folk saying that it is a certainty nothing is certain in the fight game…he may not be a boxer but he’s a fighter and can most certainly handle the pressure not to mention that left hand!!

Since competing the UFC just the one which he avenged against a larger stronger man!

‘He won’t be able to do that at UFC level’ – he did

‘He won’t be able to do that to a top five contender’ – he did

‘He won’t be able to do that to a high level wrestler’ – he did

‘He won’t be able to do that to Aldo’ – he did

‘He won’t be able to do that at light weight’ – guess what??

‘He won’t be able to touch Maywether’ – What happens next…who knows but as said before I don’t know how, but I wouldn’t bet my house on a Maywether win…would you?

jimjam…hit the nail on the head all these commentators saying he has no chance would not put big money on it the question is why not?

I can’t see how Connor would win but I’m not ruling him out.

He’s been doubted at every stage of his career and always come through!

Thanks guys if you could let me know ASAP on nwill1 at ymail dot com that would be great.

I’m meant to be picking them up tomorrow but won’t if I can’t get one.

It’s for my daughters bike too 24″ so would be a shame to miss out not many decent 2nd hand 24″ wheel sets about.

M boy – How much do you charge for facing/boring/reaming?

Might become a PITA…but also might work out cheaper…it’ll need to be a fair bit cheaper though to make it worth while.

Dirty customer apparently do it all, even remove and re fit the headset/BB

Going back to McGregor…where I think he may have a chance is that as a martial artist his movements are difference…I’m just wondering if Connor may put him off…

I’m not ruling Connor out, he’s a special athlete!

If he tries to hold a Queensbury stance and style though it really will not end well!!

Thank you Twonks…yes I know of this guy he’s a regular contributor on Orange Riders group.

Dirty customers looks to be about £75 and of course specialising in bike frames by the looks of it…bit pricey though or is that the going rate for a decent job?

Jekkyl – any more info would be good? I’ll look into that.

Mboy – that would be super convenient as I’m often in and around Blackpole! Got any more info? Do they strip as well? I’d like to take it in as it is, powder coated and walk away with it like a new frame.

st – Got the name of the one on Tyburn road.

Any photos of jobs down would be ace to…what sort of costs are these places?

I’m going through the same process at present…little one is only 8…I’ve gone with carbon forks based on the fact the weight saving will probably be more benificial to her at this time than suspension…guess it depends on where you’ll/they’ll be riding.

Connor has nothing to lose and everything to gain…if he gets humiliated he’ll walk away laughing with $millions in the bank!!

    If he wins…wow.

I’m not writing him off he is a special athlete and ‘Money’ is not in his prime…Connor is!

    Wow…all very tech.

    Front mech…what’s that’s? LOL

Not sure if it makes a difference but she’ll be running a 1x N/W. I can’t be doing with all the faff and extra weight of a front mech. Was even wondering whether to go single speed.

Super cheers…Ill grease it within an inch of its life…in 3 or so years I expect I’ll be changing the cranks to something longer and so probably HT2.

113? On the site it says 110mm!?

Cheers all looks like the Shimano UN55 is the way to go.

It is a kids bike…but an XS BFE…hasn’t loaded yet, anybody know if 68mm or 73mm of the top of their head?

Again thanks for pointing this out with HT2 you just add spacers!

    nwill1

Thanks…so any Shimano one will do? I’ll go for what ever is cheapest then.

Thanks for the heads up on tool and caps. I knew it would be a different tool but weren’t sure which.

The reason I was looking at 24″ was because in Isla Bike she’s not quite at the 26″ but soon will be.

I reckon an XS with a 35mm stem and short cranks would be ideal at 26″ in the next 12 or 18 months, the 24″ will just see her through till she grows a little.

Awesome…just looking to embark on a similar project myself, really good to know Isla will sell 24″ wheels…what cranks did you run?

    Size/brand?

    My daughter is 130cm/4’2″.
