I’m a bit torn between the Pike Airs on CRC or the 09 Rev U-Turns on Merlin…both more or less the same price but save some weight on the Revs or gain some stiffness with the Pikes 😕

Thomson Elite stem clamps in the centre, looks like a perfect excuse to get one…

…as long as you’re using standard bars or else its the X4 which is the same design as the OP stem and not that low either.

but dont ever find bob an issue climbing so don’t need the poplock

TBH I don’t use pushloc on long, sit and spin climbs as the fork locks out full extended and I prefer the front to be able to sag down allowing the front to be as low as possible. Weight isn’t as heavily on the front on a climb so bob not much of an issue either.

When I do use Pushloc is on short steep out of the saddle all the weight at the front stuff whether that be road or offroad.

I wouldn’t ride it. Get an FSA stem…they are low height

Also if I get the forks with it on can it be easily removed or do I need replacement parts.

    Need replacement parts.

With the non-Pushloc you can just lean down and lock the forks out with a twist.

I’ve got two sets of Revs, one with Pushloc and one without: nice to have the bar mounted lever but I don’t miss it on the set without

I’d genuinely like to know how many they sell.

Still, with Yeti 575 and Turner 5-Spot frames getting close to £2k, it is all getting very expensive.

Is it me or is this bonkers?

Firstly, I’ve got to say I enjoy reading the news and keeping up with current affairs but having said that, to some extent I see her viewpoint. I mean how much news do we taken in everyday that actually has no real impact on us? Would it really matter if we didn’t know the news? Just looking on the BBC news frontpage and its got stories on swine flu, tortured students, naked hikers and TBH I don’t think any story will have any impact on my life whatsoever so whats the point of reading about it?

Over the last few months I also developed a taste for ‘pessimism porn’ which can’t be healthy 😳

the metal in the seat tube of the 853 is slightly thinner than the DN6

TBH I’d agree: Before I switched to the On-One QR ‘Salsa’-style seat clamp, I was using an On-One bolt on seat clamp and had to file off the lip of the collar or the lip would clamp on to the seatpost well before the collar would clamp the seattube to the seatpost.

Just checked my 853 (also in sand if it helps) and there is about a 3 mm gap between the clamp jaws and therefore clearly your 853 is faulty and I would contact On-One asap before serious injury results 😉

Is it not a possibility that it is not the Gurkhas who have served that is the concern but the fact that they could bring any of their family members once they have gained permanent residency?

Furthermore what of soldiers from Commonwealth countries (e.g. Fijians) that have served with the UK army…shouldn’t they have the same rights or should Gurkhas have more rights?

I take it that it is their boundary?

As others, I’d put the fence in and pay for it. Our neighbour had a huge llandi which dwarfed our garden so I asked her what she thought of it, she hated it but couldn’t offered to do anything so I offered to get it cut down: she was well chuffed and so were we and we are now more chatty with our neighbours which is a bonus.

Back in the day (…and not everyone may recommended it!), if I had to get my square taper cranks off, I’d remove the crank bolts and then pedal around for a bit until they came loose. Just an option 🙂

you are crittisizing ALL LBS’s from experiances from one or two shops you have been

Didn’t think I was actually nor other posters. I was critising some LBSs which I been in, and had had experience of, for slating products they’ve not even tried which, from OP’s original post, sounded like what your colleague was doing. The product in this case was irrelevant, it was more to do with LBSs giving opinions on products they have not actually tried. I know some excellent LBSs and I am certainly not aniti-LBS.

Thought we had finished there as had agreed it would not be fair to judge Bike City on one experience but clearly this thread needs to be dragged out some more 🙁 😉

Seriously, good luck with the business Jason.

IMHO as long as the width/sweep are the same flat bars will simply lower the ride height at the front in the same way that swapping spacers from below the stem to above the stem would do. More weight at the front may help on climbing as it will stop the front end from lifting.

    More stretched out?
Marginally as technically the handlebar is slightly further away from saddle as you lower the front

    Twitchier steering?
Not in my experience from swapping from RaceFace AM low rise to a Salsa pro-moto bar

Takes me back: weeks of procrastation followed by serious cramming…plenty of Pepsi/Red Bull and a couple of packs of cigarettes, a laptop (with 33.6k modem!) and a 2pm deadline, through the night then desperately trying to find a printer that does more than 1 side per 5 minutes at 1:30 followed by pitiful attempts at binding to make it look ‘professional’. Happy days.

    Good luck!

Summer: I hate fettling as I’d rather be riding. Winter: Opposite of Summer.

Like theflatboy said, space is important as well. Had loads of space to spread out all the tools and stuff in my old house but in my current house there’s less room and I don’t find fettling as enjoyable.

    Morning Nukeproof,

I think the dont knock on-one untill you have tried it should be applied to don’t knock Bike City until you have tried it? Which I think is a fiar comment.

    Morning Jason

    Yep…Fair enough 😀

I’ll let you have the last word I get the impression you would like that?

Yeah, yeah 🙄 hate to disappoint. 😉

I’m not in some rant mode which you seem to believe and its not solely aimed at your LBS (Fair enough if you weren’t in the shop at the time as I do appreciate you can’t speak for your colleagues). Its simply that I’ve had experiences with LBSs in that they think its fine to slate a product when they they haven’t fairly tested them and I think its unprofessional to act in this manner and it gives me an inherent distrust of their advice.

here is todays lesson: If it can be blown out of proportion it will be on STW.

Yeah, just see the ‘Wear a helmet FFS’ thread for a fine example 😉

The public, keen as they are, is not more knowledgeable than a good bike shop staff member.

Yeah but its finding one you can trust…this thread proves that in that an LBS is going an opinion on a frame they never ridden. LBS are still businesses and therefore there not ever going to be completely unbiased. I agree some have a great deal of knowledge but I’d never ‘just’ take the advice of an LBS but use every source possible whether that be internet, mags and even forums.

    Touchy aren’t you

No, not really and I guess I should have put a 😉 after that sentence but I dislike the idea of people, especially LBSs who people go to advice for, giving opinions on products they have never tried.

Jason, arguing with on-one fanboys is like wrestling with a pig, the pig enjoys the attention and you’ll end up covered in shite.

As said, nothing to do with On-One brand, more to do with LBS giving opinions on a frame they’ve never ridden. Still, I don’t want to argue with the Bike City fanboy.

@ jasonlock – So are you going to stock Ragley frames? 😉

might give the head doctor thing a try,

So you haven’t used a hed doctor but feel qualified to give the advice that you should bin it.

    and stop being hamfisted.

    Agree

Throw the head doctor in the bin where it belongs

Disagree. Have 3 hed doctors and they have worked perfectly for years

Tried the screwdriver thing not the bleed valve, if it doesn’t work WILL have to bleed fully won’t I?

Do what clubby and TJ suggest before bleeding. Do it at the lever end preferably with the levers horizontal and just loosen the bleed screw (no need to take it fully out). Make sure you wash off any DOT fluid that escapes as well.

    Kit is expensive.

    nukeproof

They are about 18 months old and never been bled or serviced. Would a bleed help you think?

Probably as the brake fluid absorbs moisture overtime. However, before bleeding, just try getting a suitable big screwdriver or tyre levers in the caliper and lever the pistons back…I normally find this is enough.

Also, when I make the pad and spring sandwich I tend to put one pad into the spring correctly but the other pad about half out so the first pad will slot into the correct position prior to the second pad which gives a bit more room to get the second in. Clear as mud I’m sure. 😀

uh oh, you’ve roused the on-one fan boys

The brand really is that relevant. To dismiss a brand based on the disc mounts of one frame seems absurd and that’s what I wanted him to clarify: had he actually ridden an On-One?

    nukeproof
    Free Member

@ <blank> – So you’ve ridden an On-One then or are you just writing them off due to the disc mount facing for one frame?

    nukeproof

Depends on the frame IMHO…if I put a 113mm on my inbred, the chainrings would be against the chainstay

The thing is, if she had a fantastic new bike that was light and racey then the whole concept of riding a bike would be so much more enjoyable and hey, hooked!!!!!!

TBH I don’t see the point of this as that assumes any new mtber needs a ‘fantastic new bike’ to get hooked. Well I know I got hooked when riding a 40lb Mustang: its not the bike that gets you hooked, its the riding. Spend a ton of money and find she doesn’t get hooked…then what?

No. In fact if I think about the team I’m in, which has about 20 team members, I’d say 17 are ‘non anglo saxon origins, or european decsent, or of any disability’.
