Looking at that photo, it could be worse but no, its these…

…and yes, as grievoustim says, they are slightly more forgiving than Lego bricks but also slightly more pointless

Possibly just one asbestos fibre inhaled could be enough, or it could stick to your clothes and get someone else.

    That old gem 🙄

Its just scaremongering IMO. I agree its important to be cautious but the chances of 1 fibre being responsible for mesothelioma is incredibly remote. As said, asbestos fibres are present in the atmosphere all the time; we’d all go around with masks on if that statistic was accurate

Who’s responsible for the boundary in question? If the boundary is the neighbour’s responsibility, they pay. Likwise if its your friend’s boundary, she would be responsible for the boundary but its up to her what she erects on the boundary.

Communications the key in my experience with boundary issues; they have been thoughtless and rude to go steaming in, ripping down the existing barrier and then requesting half the price of a replacement without at least some dialogue beforehand…I’d be fuming at the lack of consideration

Scandal, think it is a bit too ‘race’ to be confidence inspiring and comfy for an oldy

I thought they were the same geometry as the standard Inbred so not too racy plus actually quite forgiving ridewise for an aluminium frame

Looks like I need to confirm if it’s asbestos cement or not..

Which, if you’ve taken reasonable precautions you can do yourself as opposed to getting someone in. I used http://cavendishlaboratories.co.uk/. All I had to do was get a small bit (these is where you need to be careful!), double-bag it in sandwich bags, and send it to them with a cheque. Job done. Presume they still do the service so better to phone and check.

I have a garage with an asbestos roof. We left it in the end as most of the evidence suggests removing it is the most likely time to cause fibre disturbance. Best thing to do is seal it with a paint.

Ours is unpainted…I did always wonder whether asbestos cement boards over time release fibres into the air which would settle as dust on stuff stored in the garage?

    med turner 5 spot

…has a 23″ effective TT (well the 09 model on the Turner site does) so, as long as you don’t find that too short, then I’d say the 16″ which also has a 23″ effective TT 🙂

    It was an 18″

I’m also 5’9″ and ride a 16″ 853 Inbred…I’d say its borderline to small for me as I do use a layback seatpost and a 100mm stem to get the right reach. 456 has a slight shorter effective TT than a standard Inbred iirc. Just to confuse, I ride an 18″ Inbred 29er slidey dropout and have an 18″ 456 in the loft somewhere.

Just like another thread today, why does nobody do the research before bidding? Still, I’m not sure in this case if Cash Converters would have known! Think you got that for a good price.

Has anyone done this before, any advice from anyone?

Yes. Enjoy it…don’t bother racing and just enjoy the atmosphere of cycling with so many other people

Is transport getting home a nightmare?

Trains won’t take bikes so it can be…get a lift back

Is all the ride on tarmac?

    Yes

Are there any killer uphill sections?

Ditchling Beacon is the worse but part of the problem is cycling around all the walkers

How long should it take a reasonably fit cyclist?

Never really timed myself…6 hours lesurely with a nice lunch stop

    Are silly costumes obligatory?

    No

    Thanks

    You’re welcome

    The Trek Fuel EX range?

I’d say in terms of ‘trendy’, frames like the 575 are out and, in these credit crunch times, the off-the-shelf high VFM bikes are ‘in’ e.g. the Pitch 🙄 😉

It is of course all bolloxs and you should ride whatever takes your fancy 😀

water: as much as you can carry if its hot, farmhouses are usualy friendly for filling camebacks up

TBH I didn’ t find water facilities to be an issue as there are various taps along route…just make sure you fill up when you can rather than risk waiting until the next tap.

The BHF event comes with a map with the water taps marked on it.

Also a surprise vote for Bikehut in Dorking.

Yeah, I’ve found it to be a good shop aside one member of staff, think he’s the manager…barely gives you time of day and my wife overheard him telling a customer “We don’t stock that and they’re rubbish anyway” and not in a helpful tone.

I do like Head for the Hills and also Bikeplus in South Croydon. C&N are alright and have been around for years, as have Finch&Son. Bought my Orange Prestige at Beyond Bikes (Well, it was Motosport iirc at the time) and always worth a look. None to impressed with Cycleworks but just my experience as others have poistive things to say.

Yep, sounds like you’ll be fine…you’re doing the training and, living in Brighton plus having done the SDW over a weekend, you’ll know what to expect. Enjoy!

@scott_mcavennie2 – Yeah, I did that year…those first 20 miles were a bitch and I completely bonked out further along the route. Lovely last year though as per piccy in my previous post

    nukeproof

Have you ridden much of the SDW? How fit are you? How use are you to long distances and being in the saddle for 10+ hours?

Its a great day with lots of climbs and lot of descents but don’t presume its easy by any means. Its not so much technically challenging but tiredness and steep descents on chalk can still catch out riders. For me, it wasn’t so much the actually tiredness from pedalling but the pain and discomfort that comes from spending so long in the saddle.

They’ll be points along the ride for water but you’ll have to take your own food.

You know as I think about it, I’m starting to want to sign-up for this year…

Happy is life with the sun on my back 🙂

    http://www.theinternet.com/

The internet is great when you know what you want to buy and have time for it to be delivered but when my son gets party invites, you might only have a few days plus I need to browse to find the right thing for a 6 year old boy as its a potential minefield of mistakes (I was told I should have bought HotWheels the other day instead of Wall-E…Well, I like Wall-E)

    TKMaxx?

Potential but a bit hit and miss with stock

    Harrods?

My store card is maxed out form the food hall 😉

@Stoner: Exactly…its possible to find stuff (I ended up in Argos the other day for a Horrid Henry Joke Kit and Wall-E toy) but its a lot harder work without Woolies

    nukeproof

Of the various shops that have disappeared its only Woolies I actually miss…have you tried to buy presents for a kids party? There is nowhere on the high street now to get kids presents…its a bloody nightmare. Plus just those weird random things you just can’t get anywhere else 🙁

Do you mean a 130mm only fork? When I had an 08 SL I was running Rev u-turns 100-130mm which, given SC say 100 – 125mm, seemed the perfect choice for the frame. For XC dialled in to 100, when things started getting vertical, dialled out to 130. As you’d expect, handling was slower at 130 which is what was required for the steep bits but I wouldn’t want that all the time.

BTW SC only warranty the frame up to 120mm as per UK website then, on the same site, state recommended fork range 80 – 125mm!

If you’re after some Rev u-turns, I’ve a couple of sets and I need to sell one after selling my SL. 😀

I agree with Dusty Lilac. Effective TT is the first measurement I look at when comparing frames sizes.

That looks well dodgy. Its the way they say that a lack of action will result in no delivery just like the ‘no action and your bank account will be suspended’ phishing emails. Having said that, they do know your name and order time/date. Being naturally cautious when ordering online, I’d be very sceptical about the authenticity of an email like that. Phone Evans and confirm?

    its a 2008 bike ! specialized

Yeah, you said but how long have you actually owned it? 2008 bikes come out before 2008. So what is it and what did they offer…just out of curosity?

ah well private sale it is then..

Yeah, best way and if you feeling like really maximising the money, split it.

How old is it? As a rule of thumb, 50% depreciation after the first year plus the LBS has to consider a profit margin for themselves when selling it on.

TBH didn’t even realise bikeshops did part-exchange…certainly something I wouldn’t consider unless I really couldn’t be arsed to sell it on privately and could afford to take the hit

Chalk and cheese response from the brothers there: one will never buy O-O again due to Brant being a poor designer and the other spends well over what the frame was worth undamaged getting it fixed and re-sprayed! Did you fight a lot as kids? 😉

Drivetrains cause it, frame design and, more specifically, chainring clearance determine if chain is going to wedgy beteen stay and chainrings.

Same problem on my 853 Inbred but plenty of zip ties limit the damage

This thread had quite a bit of info that may help…

    http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/reccomend-me-a-steel-hardtail

    nukeproof
    Free Member

I’ve always suffered low back pain and I’d say that backache is a very personal thing. For example, on my bikes I find I have to have the front low to take the weight off my back and on to my arms more unlike, as some would suggest, to get a higher rise stem/bars. Also the reach is very important in that I have to be stretched out: short stem and inline seatpost are a no-no. Saddle height: +/- 5mm from my perfect setting and I’ll get backache.

Its taken me ages to figure all this out but means I can now ride the SDW on a hardtail without backache whereas before I’d only manage 2 to 3 hours on my hardtail before being in agony. Trail and error…I’ve got inline posts, carbon posts, layback posts, 80/90/100mm stems, low rise bars/wide bars etc etc

I was having a rubbish cycle today and it should have been perfect: justing messing on the singletrack around Peaslake/Pitch. In the end I gave up and just sat in the sunshine with a mug of tea watching the world go by…bliss. 🙂

Still I was out for 4 hours and got none of the things I should have been doing done so the anxiety levels are now up…in fact I better get to my son’s school or I’ll be late

Cycling reduces my stress levels but life quickly catches back up with those few stolen hours 🙁
