Lots of "mine is great" type of comments on here but no naming of makes: be interested to know what are considered the good makes of combi boilers? Always thought the Worcester-Bosch models were considered good :?:

Sorry but is that the bike is not going to get used as a result of the continuing injury problems or that the bike just doesn't feel right when you ride it?

Personally, if its the latter, I'd persevere with it and try different setups…I'm always tweaking my ride, trying different setups and very rarely will get a bike thats right from the box

On first thoughts I'd say the 18.5in without a doubt. What's your current bike and what's it's effective TT measurement? Trek bikes come up long and from having a quick check on the Trek website the 18.5" has a eff TT of 609mm or about 24". The 19.5" is 627mm or 24.67"…very roomy! Hell, even the 17.5" is 590mm or 23.2".

Having written all of that, I'd actually say the choice should be between the 17.5" or 18.5". Hope I've helped

Bought a set of Oakleys in the US but broke the arm when I was in the UK: Oakley fixed them for free…very quick, fantastic service. I've broken them again now  but I'm expecting a charge this time as they are quite old and tbh I doubt they'll have the dark blue/black stripe arms any more.

Slight hijack if we're discussing changes to forum but can't hyperlinks in posts be underlined or a more obvious colour difference? Its not always obvious where the hyperlink is so I'm scanning text with my mouse icon waiting for the underline to appear.

    Is this enough?

No. I know Thomson say 3mm for their X4 stems

should I look for a new stem?

Yes, FSA stems have pretty low stack heights

Yeah, just sitting here thinking about that. I'm 5'9" with a 32" inseam…personally I'm thinking 18" although I do ride a 16" Inbred at the moment but thats with a 90mm stem and 25mm layback seatpost. The eff TT on the 456 is very slightly shorter than standard Inbred geometry so 18" makes sense by my logic :?

wrap the fork stanchions with a towel or bubble wrap 'til yer done.

Second that…was cutting the steerer with the forks on a B&D workbench, finished the job and was well chuffed and then I noticed the stanchion scratch. :(

Never yet(!) damaged the top tube but I've had a few wobbly moments unscrewing the handle from the headset press as you don't know at what point the thread finishes and therefore when the handle will come free and potentially fall.

Rug and a chair or a linen basket under the headtube to catch headset cups as they can fly out when knocking them out.

    Its all great fun :D

Nice one. Bricking it and excitement is one of the best combinations leading to a lovely endorphin/adrenaline rush…get a beer down you and you'll be on top of the world

On another note, I've never fiddled with the headset before and from what i've read i need qutie alot of specialized tools (and skill) Would it be wise then to take it to my LBS?

I'm sure someone will explain how you can make one out of bits from B&Q or how a block of wood and hammer will do but, until I got a headset press, that is one job I did leave to my LBS…its a 5 minute job in most cases and I'm sure most LBSs will fit you in for such a quick job.

TBH when I did my first full bike build, I never thought "this is my first full bike build"; it was just a combination of learning how to fit all the different components over time which culminated in a full build so, for example, I'd buy some new brakes and then use the instructions with them to fit them, new forks: on to the SRAM website etc etc

Park Tools website has a few good tutorials.

Thats the flip-side of good offers like this: it'll really piss off anybody who's just paid full whack. I'd be spitting feathers if I was missing out on a free pair of RS Rev U-Turn with Maxle. Hopefully O-O can sort you out

    Fantastic deal btw…So tempting

Was very interested in the Hummingbird but, after emailing Sam back in March, found it was going to be best suited to 80mm to 100mm suspension and I was hoping for 100 to 130 but having just checked the website, its now stating 100 to 120. Might just be the photos on the Singular site but the head angle looks steep though.

Bizarrely, last week I bet my wife a Hummingbird frameset if a house similar to the one we'd just missed out on came up before our house sold…our house just went under offer and no similar houses have come up :D

Yep, another good episode last night (like the 456 were ever going to be happy with 6700 'units' as a final offer  ) …looking forward to the final episode tonight.

he thing that annoys me most is all the bloody love stuff… It's not eastenders, I couldn't care less if you're straight, gay, only like robots/aliens/mutated space monkeys from mars (delete as applicable) but please concentrate on the terror/sci fi aspect & try not to overact & make it more enjoyable for us people watching.

Agreed…don't understand why they felt the need to pad the script with the weak romance stuff.

Other than that, we're quite enjoying it and at least it guarantees an hour of watchable TV this week.

Pimms is a lovely summer drink and given its been £10 for 1L at Tesco/Sainburys/Morrisons I've got enough to last me to at least September

Always been pretty impressed with my Sony W810i…

Few years old now and I'm looking for a potential replacement for the phone; quality of photos is high up the list so a useful thread.

Strange to me but if I got the letter and was convinced I hadn't been there, I'd be way more concerned my car reg had been cloned than my wife had been playing away. I'm sorry but if I read that response letter I'm afraid I would be chuckling as I would expect it to be a wind up.

However, given the Tesco letter was just a bollocking, I'd assume it was just a mistake and ignore it. The only bit in this thread which has surprised me is the ease at which private firms can obtain your address.

You sound like your kit is good but I was generalising about cheap kits

Yeah, I agree I could just be lucky/super careful :-)

    nuke
    Full Member

Yeh but the cheap ones dont last very well?

Well all the tools in my Lifeline kit have lasted multiple uses and certainly the kit has paid for itself in saved trips to the LBS plus there's the time saved and rides saved from having the tool available when, just before a ride, you realise so and so bit has come loose etc

    nuke

Just buy tools as and when you need them

Yes but its so nice to have the right tool to hand when you need it. Plus the discount from buying all the tools together rather than seperately.

Hell, given how much people spend on their bikes, don't think a £40 toolkit is a real bank breaker…same as the cost of one tyre in some cases

I use 2 Thule roof mounted cycle racks on my Ka. Ka is quite low so loading and unloading has always been dead easy.

Just need to solve the problem of the engine cutting out at most junctions/roundabouts :(

Bought a Lifeline one a while back and didn't expect to use all the tools but, over time, have pretty much ended up using every tool in the kit. IMO try not to get kits that pad them with spanners and screwdrivers as you'll probably have these anyway…go for kits with very bike specific tools. Have looked again on the Merlin site, I reckon the Bike Hand Shimano Toolkit looks better than the IceToolz one as they have changed the content from when I bought mine

apparently I should just be grateful that they can offer me an interest free loan instead!

Yeah, that’s what we’re offered…basically the same as the train season ticket loan. TBH its so complicated and questions concerning it vary depending on who you speak with that I’ve never bothered.

Got my 2 XT cassettes: a little rusty in places with what looks like a bit of chalk/whitedust-looking corrosion but I’m sure a bit of GT85 will get that cleaned up and should work perfectly fine.

I’ve heard this advice based on what TJ says above but is this advice suitable for other fork manufacturers? I stored my RS Rev forks upside and was promptly met with a small puddle of oil one morning resulting in a trip to the LBS for a top up.

imo ….. of course. Eh ?

Oh right…yeah…I’m sorry. Go on about how you believe his ban was in some way related to your post and then add the classic little caveat ‘imo’. It’s like newspapers using ‘allegedly’…print any old tosh up but as long as you cover yourself with imo/allegedly its all good.

Well actually I was looking at the ‘facts’ …… no swearing in RBs posts 2 days ago.

Well yep there’s the ‘facts’…well, actually it’s just a fact. Great, you’ve identified the fact. Everything else? Who knows?

    nuke
    Full Member

imo he was banned 2 days ago because of something which I posted

Oh pleeease. You seriously believe your post caused RB to get banned!?! You’re purely speculating as to why he was banned and assuming it’s some conspiracy at STW towers. Why can’t you just accept Mark’s final post on that thread with regard swear-filter avoidance? In typical STW style, people are debating and making assumptions with little regard to any real facts.

TBH if the SFN is already in you don’t have a lot of choice as it would be a bitch to get out.

No real advantage to HD aside the simplicity of fitting it with only an allen key. I use HDs and think they work well but others would disagree and say they break.

If the SFN is already in the forks steerer tube, use that
