You've seen 'em, those small bumps which are less than 1 wheelbase long, your front wheel will be in the air before your back wheel even touches the jump, and when it does you get bucked.

Thought that was just me. Scared myself pooless on one of those the other day.

Setup is important but I've found the best way is to go riding with people who make it look simple. They can give advice and encouragement. Sometimes all it actually takes is somebody standing next to the jump/drop/etc shouting "GO ON!"

Yes he made the wrong decision when he was 13. But society has in place mechanisms to help to protect 13 year olds from making mistakes.

Yep, agreed. If I understand correctly and it was not my immediate judgement but what ernie is saying is right in that the state should have in place the mechanisms to prevent Gary from purchasing alcohol (it is after all illegal below 18) and, failing that, the support and medical help to prevent a child from destroying his liver. Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world and these services/mechanisms are nowhere near full proof. The particular tradegy here is that from reading the story, he required no previous medical assistance in the past therefore he may not have come up on the radar as somebody requiring assistance to prevent his alcoholism. Did his parents raise concern about his behaviour? Did his school?

The problem I've got with what you're saying ernie is that you're intimating that he is the innocent victim in this tragedy and it is the state and those round him who are responsible. I can't except that this is the case as by 13 children will have to start the process of taking responsibility for the decisions they make; the process of making responsible well judged desisions is not some switch that gets triggered when a child reaches 18.

:edit: yes I meant to put innocent

iirc its not just a case of removing the hose from the lever and threading through. The hose needs to be cut and then a new hosebarb and olive need to be used (it is maybe possible to re-use the hosebard and olive but not really worth it for a couple of quid and they do come with the bleed kit iirc). Then, when its all back together, you need to bleed it. All a bit of a PITA.

I've done it a couple of times in the process of building up my O-Os; tbh, if I was building up a frame again, I'd just ziptie the hose instead.

Dunno, but if there is it would be used by the same childish types that call road riding the 'darkside'.

    It's all cycling.

As childish as you may consider it having some types calling it darkside or whatever, I find others can take it all to seriously…its just a bit of fun: no harm done.

    No.

So is there a roadie nickname for mountain biking?

    nuke

Do roadies refer to going mountain biking as the darkside I wonder?

Don't have a problem with people calling it the 'darkside'. Just like a silly nickname…don't see that its ever taken that seriously: a bit of banter between slightly different groups.

Do it. Buy one. You only live once. Regret what you did, not what you didn't.

I are very polite as we like to give riders a good name. Lead by example!

Me to! I wasn't saying you were being inconsiderate, just referring to Ian's post about meeting inconsiderate riders.

Put me in a really foul mood, and I'm inclined not to yield trail to any riders doing more than walking pace down there now.

Actually, when I think about, I'm a right grump when I'm out walking and meet what I consider to be inconsiderate cyclists. :D

tbh if I'm on a path I can legally ride on, have done my best to slow down, be considerate and indicate my presence then as far as I'm concerned if they they still have a moan, it should just be ignored and best to cycle on; not going to change anything by stopping and responding to them.

Worth taking a visit to the RAF Museum near Hendon, London. Its free and tucked in one corner is a Vulcan bomber. Good day out; my son absolutely loved it.

tbh if she hasn't given birth yet, I'd wait for a bit longer and see what comes up in the late summer/autumn sales. I'm sure the collective power of forum users will find some bargain for her when the sales start :-)

Here's mine deep in the woods…

Currently got Revs on due to the Pikes being bust and with CRC.

I'm 5'9" and medium fits me perfectly but I do like my bikes with a long reach (must have ape-like arms)

Been looking for something fork specific like this and I'll happily pay £8 if it helps maintain my suspension forks I've invested hundreds of pounds in…just bought some :-)

tbh whilst I've seen lots of plugs for this event, I hadn't actually realised all the profits were going to charity so good on you for that. Can't go as I'm on holiday but good luck with it.

Cheers guys. I'm sure the cheaper ones would work but I'm tempted by the quality feel of the Felcos, particularily at the price on zangolin's link.

 @ foxy. Not to handy for popping in your Camelbak for a bit of trail clearance

I just put the crown race on as low as it can go on the steerer and then put the fork on the bike, pop on the top cap plus screw and tighten…the crown race moves nicely down and I add spacers as I go. Obviously no doubt some of you will claim this is heresy but I've never damaged any bearings this way.

twist them into a 8 and fold.

Yeah I did this when I had to post some DH Highrollers. Then wrapped them in bubble wrap and stuck them in a couple of bin bags followed by copious amounts of packing tape; it was like a bloody football by the time I'd finished…complete PITA

Its going to be hard to compete with the Winstanley's price but defintely worth considering going to Roger at http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/ . Nice bloke and loads of experience of all things wheel related: he will fully inspect the Hope Hoops, install Stan's Yellow tubeless tape and a tubeless valve.

    Custom?

Yeah, probably but I'm sure some company someday will bring out something similar to the spec I'm after. Patience is a virtue and all that crap :-)

The new Ti XC frame is not for me I'm afraid which is a shame as I was hoping for a replacement for my Inbred 853 but in ti and with the "swap-out" system. To me this is just going to the other end of the market; you've got the ti456 as the hardcore hardtail and therefore is stiffer than say a Soda and not so XC orientated, and now they've gone the other end: lightweight, low travel race bike. Shame as I thought the larger market would be the middle of the road XC market even if there was overlap with the ti456.

So what ti frames are out there for 4 to 5 inch forks, longish reach and can be run SS or geared? Shame the Soda or Ridgeline don't have slidey dropouts

Hope Hoops: Stans 355 or Stans Flow…iirc the Flow rim is only 10g heavier than a 719 rim but wider and arguably stronger.

Personally I'm running a 355 on the front of my PA with a 2.35 Highroller (with inner tube)and Pikes and its taken everything I can throw at it. Got mine from Wheelpro…Roger checks them over, fits yellow tape and a valve.

Funnily enough just replaced my 8 year old Spesh Sport mtb shoes for exactly the same at the Evans warehouse sale. Tried on all the various versions (Expert, etc) but actually figured the Sport would still be fine. Been riding with them now and they felt perfect straight from the first ride: stiff, light, airy. tbh, like you, I did think they looked a thinner/less hardwearing but, given the cost, I'm happy if they survive half the length of time my old ones did (…and technically my old ones are still going; they are just now spares)
