    Something like:

    Gigantes Plaki / Baked Giant Beans

    Mine would probably use loads of fresh thyme and have fennel instead of the celery. Plus a tray of roast potatoes.
    Works well with tinned butter beans (ie Lidl)

    A “three things together = supper” strategy is great, but make them grains, beans and greens. Plus eggs/cheese, I suppose, if you’re veggy.

    Bachelors Beanfeast is the first “vegan” thing that I can remember eating, must have been about 1980 (though I was far from vegan then) I can remember being surprised how tasty and filling it was.

    I never use those yeast flakes because I spent so long working in a microbiology lab and the ever present smell of autoclaving malt/yeast extract agar together with that of all the crap that had accumulated in the bottom of the autoclave has put me off for life. Quite fine with marmite (Meridian version)though.

    I started buying occasional jars of B12 tablets a few years ago after thirty years or so of veganism. If you eat enough fortified foods you will be fine but sometimes I go months with no soya milk/marmite. And B12 supplements are simply a fermentation product of bacteria – nothing wrong with that

    A pumpkin idea.
    I don’t really do pumpkin but this is one of my go to chunky stew recipes and it says in the small print that they often add pumpkin to it.

    (I use the supermarket packs of pre-cooked chestnuts, shallots that come in 500g packs from Lidl etc, cider instead of wine, and where the recipe says “carnation cloves” it means “cloves”)
    (and use loads more olive oil than that)

    I’ve been vegan so long I can hardly remember eating non-vegan food so I don’t really miss it.
    Vegan things I miss are: Vegebanger mix – since its discontinuation no other sausage mix has come close and vege sausages nowadays are all frozen palm oil and tvp concoctions, and Cauldron Foods smoked tofu – other smoked tofus are available still but that stuff was food of the gods
    I like simple bold flavours, carbs, generous use of olive oil, things containing lots of alliums and umbellifers, things you can serve with roast potatoes, chilli, garlic and fresh thyme.
    I imagine trying to please children is a nightmare.

    What would make my job easier is a tape measure/ruler that logs measurements as you take them and gives them as a readout at the end of the day.
    My work involves measuring field trials of plants and many of the measurements we take involve clipping on an expensive bit of kit, pressing a button and storing the result then moving on to next plant. A lot of measurements however are done with a ruler/tape which involves taking measurement then putting it down while you enter data manually into a hand-held computer or on a bit of paper, or having someone there to write it for you if you are up a ladder. I know there are laser tapes that will do this but they are no use for us as there are leaves in the way or we have to measure curves.

    Supermarkets in my town in W Wales have definately upped their game recently. Current favourite is a close call between Thornbridge Tart and Tiny Rebel Beat Box. Bragdy Conwy are putting out some very drinkable bottle conditioned beers. Envious of EGF.

    People always used to say that Hungarian is better than Spanish. The wholefood shop in town (Aber) used to sell some loose and when they took the lid off the jar it would fill the room with sweet aroma. The stuff they sell now isn’t nearly as good. No recommendations but maybe search for a Hungarian one on ebay.

    Kebab Express, Queens Rd, Brighton, mid 90s.
    They used to do “homeless specials” – as much hummus and doner meat that you could fit into a pitta bread for 50p.
    Otherwise, the basic business strategy seemed to be that after you’d been in once then you were their friend and everything would cost 50p or so.

    I beg to differ. Cook polenta soft and porridgey(?)on day one, fry/roast it on day two. (I think you underestimate mashed potato also).

    But, sure, it is always going to be bland carbs. Just add enough olive oil/butter, fresh herbs, salt and pepper and serve it with something with sufficient guts that it needs some bland carbs

    Pralus are all nice, unless you know something that I don’t.

    When I was nine or ten, early seventies, our primary school (Chartham, Kent) was one hundred years old and as part of the celebrations there was a do on the village green with a marquee and all of us kids were presented with something (I forget what) by Richard Hearne who was apparently famous for his character “Mr Pastry” and had almost got to be Dr Who after John Pertwee.
    I had no idea who he was then and I still wouldn’t know today were it not for Wikipedia.
    I am under no illusion that this is interesting.
