DT swiss rims. Or perhaps I’m just too fat.

I tried this but couldn’t get it to work, even with a compressor. had to go back to using rim strips

is it a stan’s rim? definitely don’t drill, if you ever want to run yellow tape and a valve instead of a rim strip thing then hole will be too big

    hi

you aren’t needlessly worrying. Ive got some 521s with stans rim strips in, they just dont work without something underneath them for these big rims as the tyre doesn’t meet the strip. I cant tell you for sure what will happen on the ’19s but if you find the tyre just isn’t inflating would suggest the first thing you try is cloth rim strips.

didn’t you also have a post earlier about old tyres? sounds like you are having tubeless fun. good luck, definitely persevere if you have teething troubles, tubeless is the best thing I did for my bike

i’ve used old tyres, they seem OK. I’ve sometimes patched the inside of the tyre if there was a hole you could see light through. Agree with nJee20 though, at some point folding tyres just get to baggy to stay on the rim reliably, wire bead ones don’t seem to have the same prob though. Also only seems to be a problem if you move tyres between rims. I’ve put a folding tyre on the rim and just left them on for 2+ years and they have been fine. I think it is the continual stretching between different rims that does it

and +1 for cut gate (though I usually ride it there and back from the ladybower side). It’s my favourite natural trail in the country so handy that it’s on my doorstep!

alright mate. There is some great riding around here. I’ve not got any maps to help you with but have a look at:

redmires reservoirs, over stanadge pole, either down the bridleway to the left or straight on down long causway.

from there you can either put in a few road miles to shatton moor or head back towards sheffield and do lady cannings plantation \ houndkirk moor towards the fox house pub.

From there you can head towards blackamoor, there are various bridleways well worth an explore.

sorry I can’t give you route maps or anything but all these names are on the 1/50,000 OS so hopefully you can figure it out. the vertebrate graphics book mentioned above is called dark peak mountain biking I think and includes these routes.

I got there before 8am last time, i was so impressed with the new trails I stopped and paid on the way out. an unprecedented attack of honesty!

at least there has been plenty of money spent at Dalby recently, before the world cup things were starting to look a bit tatty but the new stuff is great.

I tend to find it is press-on mini pump heads that bend the valves. I’ve not had any trouble since I switched to one of those Lezyne pumps that has a little piece of hose to connect to the valve

I had a mate report something similar to the police and they took it very seriously. It’s easy for them to track a reg plate and actually do something about the complaint so unlike other forms of anti-social behaviour I think they have quite a good record

I'm planning a trip there on the weekend. I see videos of people on some sort of big jump action, is it worth me taking my downhill lid ? Can anyone tell me if the jumps are hard to find \ far from the car park

Ive done this trip a couple of times, though not from as far as you are travelling. For my money I would stay the Sunday night in Scotland, maybe at Kipford holiday park. It is right on the trail at dalbeattie, you could get up and knock it out before you drive home

I had this exact thought a couple of weeks ago when riding down Devils Elbow near Blackamore in Sheffield. Hopefully the cutbacks will persuade the Wildlife trust that they should leave it alone.

the much overlooked Bontrager Big Earl 2.3 (wet compound for the front). I found it more predictable than a high roller and more outright grip than the Eskar. Not too heavy either

Is conti vertical a tubeless tyre? If not you will find that the official advice is to use a rubber rim strip but I am being told that is often unneccesary. So, seal the holes with the yellow tape, push the rubber valve into the hole. Put the tyre on, pump it up. If it doesn't inflate use a compressor. Unless it seals really nice first time and shows no air loss you will need to put a bit of sealant in (just let the air out, remove the valve core, put sealant in with a little bottle then reinflate the tyre). That should hold it even if it is not a tubeless tyre. Seems like a faff but once you have done it a couple of times its OK

thats fairly clear then! I usually use Just Riding Along, who are very good. They only do custom builds though and thats around £400 for Pro2/Flow, looks like I could save about £130 by going for a factory option from Wheelpro.

I had a custom built set of arch \ proII. They are so good, they take the same abuse as a set of D521s but weigh so much less. Most people seem to go for Flow now though as they are only 50g heavier.

Does anyone else have any feedback on this Wheelpro chap?

those prices from wheelpro are great, I'm tempted for a set of spares..

They might not be UST but they are designed to be tubeless (ZTR = Zero Tube Rim). Just Riding Along only stock them sealed with yellow tape, they should be fine to get tubeless like this. Have you tried using a compressor?

no worries. My friend got his from Rutland cycles, apparently they had quite a few and also some spares so might be worth a call if you are after parts

Jon – I've a friend who bought a new one of these a couple of months ago, never got on with it and is selling it. If you feel like going a different route and getting a nearly new one instead of fixing up your current steed let me know

and + 1 for Kipford holiday park, definitely one of the best campsites in the area and not too bad for midges

if you are there for 3 or 4 days you could ride the lot. Newcastleton I wouldn't travel to specifically but would be worth a detour on the way up (assuming you are travelling from England).

If you can face the extra hour north Innerleithen is my favourite. Dont be tempted by the fireroads of Glentrool, utterly pointless. Dalbeattie and Mabie definites for the list and nice and close together

tempting. I had a mech destroy the spokes on the drive side of a wheel a couple of weeks ago, some sort of alternative is very appealing (cue responses about correct mech adjustment…)

what sort of gear spread do you get with these things? Is it like running 1 x 9?

If you can stretch to the extra money I love my exposure diablo. you may not need the extra brightness but once you have it you find you make use of it. It will also run for about 3 hours on low which is about the same as the hope 1 on high. The mounting system on exposure is also excellent.

I will be riding GT on saturday morning, if you are still on the track then I guess you will be in a pretty bad state though!

    Its a top track, enjoy

I used to ride with no lid but I've gone totally the other way now. I bought a downhill helmet for wharnecliffe and I feel so exposed with nothing in front of my face I don't like my xc lid any more.

perhaps I just crash too much

after a few years of getting annoyed with crappy chain tools I figured I would get a standalone chain tool + a very minimal multi-tool (lezyne do some good small ones). weighs in at the same amount as an alien but you actually have a chain tool that works.

    cue dissent from Alien users….

skoda octavia diesel? I just sold a 2004 one for about 3.5 k, massive boot and 60mpg on the motorway. Only thing is that they are a little small in the rear passenger seats, price to be paid for having a massive boot I suppose. We managed to get a massive double buggy in ours.

almost certainly pawls and spring replacement. The nice thing about the way that Pro 11 fit together is that with a bit of force you can get your fingers behind the cassette and pull the whole freehub body off with it still attached. Watch for the end cap going flying into the grass though!

not the nicest way to do things but if its that or walking its worth a try. Assuming its all stuck down with gack a bit of handy stick should clean it up enough to get some engagement.

The 'wrenching the whole freehub off by the cassette' method also useful for if your chain disappears down between the spokes and the cassette.

are you tubeless? Running the tyre half flat so it spreads out like a pancake seems to work for me

what size are the captains? sounds like you problem might be easily solved by running a 2.3 up front and 2.1 on the back. Definitely agree with the suggestion of Eskar 2.3, really nice and grippy with a good round edge for cornering. Also Bontrager big Earl 2.3, wet compound. Ive got one on the front at the moment and it hangs on even when the back is drifting about speedway style (especially if you run at about 26 psi)

I tried to camp near Kiroughtree once but the midges were so bad we drove back to kipford. Kipford holiday park I think it was called, right next to the dalbeattie track

I recently tried EBC ones as a replacement for avid. utter rubbish. the pads were wider than the original so hard to get in the caliper, there was less actual pad material so it didn't hold in the spring properly and just flapped about. back to avid for me

maybe something on the edge of the dark peak instead? I've not got any of my maps to hand but there are great loops you can put together around the edge of the peak, the bridleway off stanadge pole is a particular favourite of mine and pretty easy to make into a 10k loop or so. If you put out a call on here for a route someone will probably be able to mail you a scanned version
