i entered 3 of the UK gravity enduro series this year, the first competitive events that I have done.

the standard is pretty high and I was consistently in the bottom 3rd of my class. It didn’t matter too much though as the main day is seeded so I found myself racing people of a similar ability. I tried to warn people behind me on the seeding runs that I wasn’t that fast and I hope I made a decent job of just letting people past when I held them up. In summary if you are reasonably competent I think you can give it a go.

re: advice, you need to be fit enough to ride a 40 k loop on 2 successive days and still have enough energy to go for it on the descents. some uplift days helped me get my eye in on the more technical stuff as well.

a dropper post is pretty much essential if you want to be competitive as some timed stages have fire road sprints in them.

don’t go too lightweight on tyres, i saw a lot of people whose race was ruined by punctures and in the last race I was glad I opted for 2.5 USTs to give a bit more security on the sharp rocks.

Make sure you arrive on the Saturday in plenty of time to do the full loop as a practice, riding stages blind while racing was a disaster for me.

enjoy ! maybe see you at a race in 2013

very tempting, what the hell is MMX though? would I need an SRAM mech to bolt it to or something?

ok, now I need brembo brakes for my bike. They would have to come with bright red calipers though

the xc loop is a bit rubbish at cwmcarn (IMO etc etc) but I like the downhill. depends on the sort of riding you do but I would go for afan if you want a good red route, cwmcarn if you want a downhill track

my hardtail has a 9 year old set of hope minis on it that have had literally no maintanence and work as well as the day I got them.

which to be fair is not great, I prefer my shimano

I’ve had both experiences. On the one hand the local police have been helpful and concerned about vandalism to my car. On the other hand I have reported people actually in my house stealing stuff and got a very underwhelming response.

good luck with the bike Vondally – check cash converters in hillsborough \ west street over the next few days

for me the main advantage of the SLX is the tool free reach adjust, and the XT also have bite point adjust. just helps make set up a little easier

mine bled fine first time following the shimano instructions (push fluid up from the caliper into the funnel screwed into the lever)

I also thought that the bite point adjust screw did nothing, but bleeding this with the screw out, and then screwing it in as far as needed after bleeding seemed to make all the difference

superstar sintered have been a fine replacement for me. They dont come with a new pin though, anyone found a cheap source for these (hoping to replace the split pins on the SLX brakes I have)

do you mean gravity enduro? If so I would suggest a double, I saw a lot of people on 1 x 10 this year and they seemed to struggle with the long uphills in the transitions. I would also go with a bash, mine has some serious gouges on it from the more technical sections

my dad once got caught stripping a started motor on the kitchen table. He moved so quickly when my mum came back to try and hide it he dropped the starter motor and smashed the floor tiles. I’m not sure their relationship ever fully recovered

why did you show me this? Now I really want to do it, and I dont have the time or the money.

Definitely one for the wish list though. If I can persuade Mrs Nosedive to look after the kids for a week one year I’m there.

llandegla in the dark you say? I end up landing in the trees on the B-line when I ride it in the light, anything could happen in the dark. must give it a try

back to your point though, domestic emergency? appt with dentist, plumber etc? stop posting on the internet about it though, you never know…..

“Edit: The white ones are 30g heavier”

just brilliant. Amazes me that people pay hundreds of pounds for a lightweight set of wheels but gladly accept a weight penalty so that the rims can be white

I’ve just done exactly that. Does seem strange it has good parts on it, my guess is it has been re-built by someone who steals, breaks and re-builds bikes to hide their indentity

    good work Shergie!

RE: the spesh seller, check out his feedback, looks like he has moved on branded road bikes. One buyer describes him as ‘the honest John of bike sales’. Robbing git more like

I also like the ‘I wont give you the full frame number as I have been caught out like that before’. Caught out how ? He gave out the full frame number and someone indentified it as stolen I assume

seems to be plenty of lady riders on the uplift days I have done. All way faster than me as well.

I’m loving this thread by the way! beats the usual rubbish about tyre choice and gear ratios

There dont seem to be many downhill bikes in large size for sale, is the sizing different than for trail bikes? I’m ~ 6 foot, any advice on whether a medium or large is right?

I’ve been going a few uplift days on my 160mm xc bike. I’ve been pleasantly suprised at how helpful, friendly and inclusive people are.

My last trip was Hamsterley, and for the first time I felt a little under-biked. What would be a good, cheap, second hand first downhill bike?

I got some Recon Gold 15mm from Merlin with 15mm axle for ~ £200. They seem really good for the money. you dont get the poploc lever with them though so worth keeping in mind if you want to adjust the compression

good thoughts bowglie. the plan is quite specific, suggesting specific routes to change might just work.

I think there is an argument to allow bikes on the wide, recently upgraded footpath that runs below burbage edge. At the moment the byway across houndkirk is the only way across the moor, having 2 routes across would mean much more opportunity (legal opportunity) for an off road return route.

I still need to read what is proposed in more detail though before putting pen to paper, planning on having a look over lunchtime

thanks antigee, a consideration of open access during reviews is a great idea, I will add the same when I comment. I might also add something that there is a standard requirement that any trail maintanence is proposed, and has time for review by ‘passionate and knowledgeable groups’ prior to going ahead. The last round of work on houndkirk moor went ahead very quickly after the signs went up, if we can avoid there might be less problems in future.

A really good networked of linked bridleways would be excellent, I went out in the peak for the first time in a few months on Sunday and I had forgotten how many road miles were needed to link things up. Not ideal on a 160mm bike with 2.5 tyres

“Lenny Hill Bridleway @ Blacka Moor – for clarity, this is the Bridleway that goes up the hill, alongside the drop into the Blacka Dyke, across the stepping stones from close to the bottom of the Devils Elbow and Piper House Bridleways.
We will be filling in the steps towards the bottom of the slope and covering over the clay areas that are almost constantly muddy with crushed gritstone”

no more steps to fly off!? gutting. It seems a real shame that the designation of bridleway which allows us to ride these trails is what ends up making them boring when maintained.

In some sort of fantasy state it would have been great to see Devil’s elbow levelled and maintained but bikes banned from it, and pipers gate augmented with some kickers and tabletops and horses and people banned from it. Then we would all have been happy.

I guess multi-use trails have to be a compromise though

    I can’t believe what I am reading.

chav scum ride use MXers to ride dangerously, illegally and ruin tracks that people have spent a long time building, and they get defended, on here, really? am I on the wrong forum?

by the way call the police, MXers are banned from wharnecliffe and the police do come out to try and catch them (on MX bikes ironically but there you go)
