@dantsw13 be really interested to learn more about your plans and analysis!!

    @lamp
that’s really interesting. I’ve been looking at solar and battery, and have come to conclusion you need battery to really make solar work, but hadn’t thought about just battery!!! We are octopus Go, so could charge powerwall off peak, and discharge throughout the day at significantly lower cost.

OP. We had a 15 year old firebird, absolute car crash of a boiler. Just replaced with a Bosch Worcester unit and smart thermostats. Crack on I say!

Super chuffed they’ve managed to get it back but comms from northern Powergrid been non existent. One look at the outage map suggests why though!!!

@sing1etrack that sounds likely. It looks to have sagged a little, looks like it’s the ends which are flapping rather than ripping.

Needs more investigation. I’ll get up and maybe get someone in to have a look. Confirms my suspicions it’s not right, certainly! Thank you!

Left wahoo last year after v1 was consistently buggy and became quite unusable at times. Also had issues with their HR sensors. Real shame, good unit and it had worked well for several years

Acknowledging there’s potentially something wrong here (and as obviously described in other personal examples of criminal behaviour at the workplace above) and that needs to be separated from what follows. A lot of the discussion above is essentially describing employee relations and the employer – employee paradigm. By its very nature, at the end of the day, it’s a transaction. Transactions are rarely equal.

Thanks everyone – really interesting views.

Price of oil is going up, and in the long term will go up.

Re oil longevity, our experience would be that 10-15 years not unreasonable. Our last was 20 years, and it was spare parts for the two way flue that killed it in the end.

Certainly heard similar ASHP horror stories here with similar aged houses. I think we would also need additional permissions for ASHP with noise and conservation area issues.

I’ve read bio fuel alternatives to oil being developed.

Fwiw we have just pressed go on a charger.

    My criteria were:

    – As future proof as possible, so 22kw capability a bonus, reckoning on potentially 3 phase upgrade in our lifetime (or not, but it’s there).
    – Reviews. Some pretty hit and miss stuff out there on the quality of installs and after sales engagement.
    – Company engagement pre order. How helpful were they, how much care did we get in to explaining the install and checking compatibility.

Based on that we’ve paid a bit more for an Andersen. 22kw capable. Not linked to an energy company, but capable of linking to octopus go to hit cheap tariffs. Fantastic pre sale engagement checking our electrics, desired location etc. It’s nicer to look at, which is useful on the front of the house in a conservation area and any potential awkward neighbours.

I took the view of its there for the next 20+ years and will only become more important in our lifetime as EV’s become the norm. So an extra couple of hundred will be recouped within the first year, and becomes insignificant over 20 years.

Yeah! Got mine in the autumn. Apex 1 build.

Love it! It’s fantastic. The BB has already gone, at a paltry 500 miles. But otherwise it’s great. Mostly been doing winter road miles, where it’s been excellent. Little bit of gravel was also grand.

@dantsw13 couldn’t agree more. For me the acid test to covid secure, would be in the event of anyone confirming positive there is no one requiring to isolate thorough potential close contact. If it’s covid secure, then social distancing and PPE and policy should mean no one is at risk……

I know workplaces which are ‘covid secure’ yet people are meeting criteria for defined close contact and having to isolate. Doesn’t scan for me.

@rsmythe it’s my personal experience, but, A lot of problems start lower down the leg, and you experience it higher up. It’s kind of logical as well, bad foundations eequal bad walls. I have high, collapsing arches with flat feet. I used to have my knees blow up when I hit a certain fitness, due to the pressure being placed on my knees by my feet.

I now wear custom carbon insoles, probably on the 3rd iteration in 18 years, which along with regular stretching, occasional work on certain muscle groups etc means I’m completely problem free. It probably won’t be just one thing, may well have VMO and/or glute weakness as well for example, but my podiatrist took a detailed hour and was able to pinpoint the points to work on. Over the course of a few months we sorted it.

If you’re in the North Yorkshire type area let me know and I’ll send you details.

My knees used to always blow up. Turned out was my feet…. I’d prescribe a good podiatrist as a start point.

Today is the final day of my 4 year old isolating – huzzah!

Firstly, hope you’re all ok and don’t have any issues.

Secondly, as others have said the child is isolating so childcare arrangements cannot be made outside of the household bubble.

I’m very sorry to hear your employer has behaved like this. It feels like they’re exploiting the situation quite frankly. I think you’d have a very strong unfair dismissal/discrimination type case were anything to happen. I’d consider writing to your mp perhaps? You could very constructively ask your employer exactly what childcare they’d envisage you put in place?

Once again, thanks to Tired and the multiple other posters giving massively useful insight. It really is appreciated.

Tough times in this household, 4 year old now in two weeks isolation, and my teacher wife just coming out of two weeks.

I speak inevitably as someone close to the situation and therefore more emotionally influenced, but I think to the points around transparency and clear communication, simple acknowledgment and empathy would go a long way. Have the government ever acknowledged the real, prolonged impact of asking teachers to do what they do every day, keeping it normal for the kids, not wearing PPE, watching their colleagues catch it and in some cases become very ill as a result, worrying about being the transmission vector to their families and loved ones.

As Tired has so rightly said, there are no good choices here. But as others, Pondlife included have said, better communication around these difficult choices and transparency would go a long way.

Pondlife, very sorry to hear about your first officer.
