Hi we drove the hebrides last summer in the camper from Ullapool to Lewis then all the way down and off Bara into Oban.

Lots and lots of cyclists on the island most going in the opposite direction, from south to north as this is usually the most favorable direction for a tail wing rather than a head wind. The small southern islands are quiet with a nice remote feel. There are lots of good camp sites, god places to eat but some can be quite far apart.
Balranald springs to mind as a good place to stop off. Small family run site with good facilities a drying room and huge beaches.

south Uist also had a nice site with a brand new very nice bunk house. it would be a great place to stop over for a night or 2.

I posted a review of our trip on a camper web site it is not really cycling specific but may throw up a few ideas.

My first 29er. Bought a nice looking Titanium frame from a fairly well known Chinese frame builder. I bought it used from someone in the UK it was well priced, obviously for a reason. I hadnt really done my research in to what made a good or bad 29er. So very quickly I learned about toe over lap and BB drop.
The Ti frame had a crazy high bottom bracket and a really short top tube. it also had a fairly steep head angle. It would go into a speed wobble and I crashed it almost every ride sometimes going in a straight line.
Once I understood what made for a better riding bike, i rebuilt the donor bike (On One Parkwood) and even though it was probably a bit on the big side for me it was a great bike and I ended up keeping it for ages. Now got a Santacruz Chameleon and at last have a nice riding bike that fits properly and takes 29 and B+ wheels. It was certainly a learning curve!

OK found the note book, half a page missing. I think I gave everything I had left over to a mate that had a spot.
The top pivot bearing i have as WFI-0809-04 should bring you to this

Im afraid I dont have details for the rest but i think the rocker tip bushes on the Burner are 1/2″ they are easy enough to measure.

Hi UK Flat I think I may have the size written in a note book, I do remember they are imperial sizes. I shall have a look.
Regarding the service I know the spot was a good bike, I had a few and a Burner but these are 6/8 years old now. I cant imagine a lot of the manufacturers offer a lot of support for models that old.
I had an issue with my RFX and DT sorted things out directly. It was as hassle free as anything could be wit ha customer / supplier in different countries and time zones.

When I had a dw link turner I used to just phone them in the evening in the uk order stuff over with the card and they would post it. Never cost much in postage.
For all the nylon dw link bushes I bought direct from igus uk would order about 12 of each size at a time. Weren’t to expensive like that.

We took our camper to Harris (and the other Hebridean isles) in the summer. Didnt get chance to ride that trail but just another reason to go back. The place really is stunning.

Certainly doesn’t look like a “cheap” bike. A bargain at £800 with the trade in. Size wise it compares to the Chameleon. I have an ally medium and its 17″ I tried the lard and it felt a lot bigger im thinking it must be closer to 19″
Shame about the tyre clearance would have been nice to able to squeeze a pair of plus wheel into it and run some 27 x 2.8 rubber.

There was no soldering required for the 800 just some very small connectors for the battery ribbon onto the PCB

I changed the battery in my 800 recently as it was suffering poor battery life (it is fairly old).
Iv put new batteries in ipods a few times but the garmin is so much smaller and they seem to have crammed a lot more inside than i expected. I managed to get it back together and its working fine and battery life is good again but I would say if your not confident with electronics I would send it somewhere if you think the battery is at fault.
I watched a vid on youtube that has the whole procedure as a tutorial

Big thanks to Rich for another cracking event / weekend. That route was tough but really good some great riding.
I really wasn’t sure if I was in the frame of mind the 100 mile route but I’m glad I / we pushed on. Amazing what a good plate of pub grub can do!

On the Torver side of Walna Scar is Torver Low common (on OS map) it was part of last years route and a nice spot for overnight bivvi after a quick pint at the pub at Torver.

It sounds like you spend more time on road than off, with this in mind have you considered a gravel bike?
I bought one last year and I have surprised just how far “off road” you can go on them. Iv taken it places where it was out of its depth and a proper hardtail MTB would have been a better choice, but i still picked my way around or up and down.
It has 650B wheels so will take a good size tyre a 2.1 mtb tyre will fit, has discs and and rack and guard mounts. Its really very versatile. It doesnt feel or ride like a road bike on fat tyres, it is slower on the road but good fun on any by ways.

I was up there a while ago, the orange line is the one i took, its pretty vague as i remember but fairly obvious which way to head. The bit between the tarns and heading towards Sty head is pretty good. Down from sty head to stockley bridge also decent but not always a decent line between big boulders gets nice at the bottom down to the bridge again.
Iv also done it in the reverse and down Rossett Gil, then back up and over stake pass, I wouldnt bother going that way again!

    Heres how it looks

Thanks for the useful info….. just come back from the garage, as i suspected it is an XD driver with a 10/42 11 speed cassette. Thats a bummer as the sunrace cassette option is out the window unless I change the rear hub or free hub.
Looks like i will have to go for the front chain ring option. The ring is slightly dished so I guess i need a “boost” chain ring. Damn missing old standards now :-(

    Cheers Rich.
Have to admit I assumed it would be an XD I’ll have a proper look tomorrow. That could be the answer

Hi thanks, but I have a Revelate frame bag but i want to keep it for my bikepacking gear and not fill the space with a bladder.
Its a 17″ frame and the triangle isnt that big, so its not a huge bag.

Turner Bikes have been great over the years and the few times I had any issues it was often sorted out with David Turner emailing me personally .
Its service like that that keeps customer loyalty.

I would also agree the new improved classifieds is garbage, and the wanted section has totally died.
I sell my stuff on ebay mostly for items that are worth a bit more I wait until they have the £1 final fee offer on(one starts tonight at midnight runs all day Sunday) get your frame sold for £500 and pay only £1 to ebay.

I have owned and ridden hardtails for a good few years, for me without a doubt the biggest thing that makes the difference is a decent fork.
I would say a good 130mm is way better than an average 150mm fork.

regarding frame material, my Titanium 26 wheeled bike rode great, but most 29ers cover ground more easily.
With that in mind i would possibly look at some lower end sale bikes and immediately swap the fork for something better.
there are non boost 150mm 29er pikes on wiggle at £350 easily lowered to 130mm
There were OEM fox forks for sale on some german sites for £200
Would even look at a build up using new frame /fork / wheels from sales and some good used parts.

Either way £1500 is a good budget for an ally hardtail I picked up a nearly new santacruz chameleon for around that price recently

One thing I have noticed is how few wanted ads there are in the new forum area. I often browsed the wtd section as it was simple to see if someone was looking for that odd or end that may be lurking in my parts box rather than list everything in for sale

Only 10 wtd ads in a week. it was always a bit quieter than the other forum pages but 10 in a week! That’s broken.
