I have been looking for a gps file for the descent from Rochers de Naye, but your link does not seem to work?

Try this but warning: you only can buy all the maps together as a complete package, which is probably not of use for you, and, it’s horribly expensive! So you’re better of with Jambalayas tip.

Anyone know the deal on access laws btw?

There are very little to almost none privatly owned and not accessible parts. Most of the forrest belongs to the local gouvernment. If there are privately owned parts, the landowner has to guarantee access. Another plus is the large and very good signposted hiking trail net, which does not just include fireroads but also singletrails. You are allowed to use them with your bike.

(please excuse the spelling, english isn’t my core competence …)

Techy singletrack is usually not signposted except in trail center-like areas like verbier. Open public transport brings you almost everywhere. If you have more than 2-3 hours to spend on the bike, i’d say, take your bike, it’s worth it, lots of great riding nearby. For maps or gps data look here. Enjoy!

Ask Ash (yes, the Trans Provence Ash). Wait for him to pop up here or try to contact him via his website. I used to ride with him here in Basel and I recall him doing guiding on a regular basis in the Vosges. As a bike guide he migth give you some advice on this.

Fox Talas 140 on my BFe. Although I find myself riding it mostly on 120mm. Its nice to have some more travel for the rougher terrain, but I wouldn’t want more than 140mm. Comes with 15mm axle.

Not in this particular case. Virtually all of the people who I know who have problems with discs fall into one of these categories:

    1. obsessive fettlers.
    2. people who don’t look after their bike at all.
    3. People who do look after their bike but are ill equipped to do so, either through lack of tools or skills.
    4. people who ride older hope brakes

well, as i see it based on this thread, you’d have to complete your list with

    5. peple who ride avid brakes

maybe those who have problems ride more in shitty weather?

theirein maybe lies the root of the matter. disc brakes come on mountain bikes and these are usually ridden outdoors. it occasionally happens, that bike and brakes get dirty …

    thank you folks!
i don’t mind using my bike tools kit from time to time. infact, this even makes up for a part of my pleasure in mountain biking. but to have to faff around after every other ride is something different …

you can go either way. both can take the cable from the top tube or the down tube. the one on the right (771) is supposed to work better in muddy condititions.

funny, seeing pictures of the trails i’m riding on a british website …

appart from the trails to the nearest jura hills gempen and blauen, you might want to buy this map in a bookshop in basel:

    swiss singletrail map basel area

or have a look at this website:
    traildevils.ch

appart from that, i think ash is the one to ask. i have to hook up with him too for some riding in the black forest, that starts just about 15 min. away (north) of basel.

    +1 what schmiken says.

the new 2011 evo line comes “tubeless ready”, so sealing won’t be a hassle anymore.

i was running maxxis ardent 2.4, schwalbe nobby nic and fat albert, both in 2.25 and now rubber queens 2.2, all on flow rims. the contis are not much smaller than the ardents, just about the same size as the schwalbes.

look here for infos on trails and maps in switzerland:

    http://www.traildevils.ch/trails.php

“I have found the Swiss Germans to be a bit dull and anal but very trustworthy.”

don’t know about that but i might be a bit biased …

i fitted the schwalbe fat albert 2.25 to my no tubes flow rims. no hassle at all compared to other, non tubeless tyres. i even succeded in blowing them up with my floor pump.

for some lift assisted riding, try this one in chaumont, next to neuchâtel:

    http://www.traildevils.ch/trail.php?tid=133

it’s not exactly real DH, more like north-shore-type of riding, but fun anyway.

also, check out http://www.traildevils.ch for trails and community-stuff in switzerland (german only). might be helpful, covers almost all of switzerlands official trails with maps, vids etc.

now some thread-hijacking, sorry: ash, am i wrong or are you the guy that posted a vid from a nice sunday morning downhill in the southern part of the black forest, some weeks ago? i’m a swiss based in basel but the black forrest is more or less unknown to me – was that some place near freiburg (D)?
    thanx
