Depends on your riding stlye and where you ride i guess. Judging by the chunks out of the bash guards on both of my bikes then i reckon they are a good thing. Also, i never really used the big ring anyway.

Go on then Ton. I don't actually own this anymore (got a PA as my HT these days). While i had it i thought it was a great bike, the only reason i sold it was because it was little to big for me (19"). Would happily own another though in the 17.5" size if one came along at the right price.

Raceface 3 month for me. Shimano usually last me about 9 month. Now running a hope BB, been on the bike about 12 month now and still running fine. Only time will tell as to how good it is. CK, not tried one.

My Heckler when i first got it. It's not orange anymore though, it's now matt black. Never really liked the orange (it was a dull orange) so got it powder coated in the black. It's also changed hands, it's now the girlfriends bike with different kit on it.

Mmmmmmm……park head home made soup. Would be rude not to say hello to Terry and the girls as well. When you planning this for? I'm currently out of action with a prolapsed disc but would be keen to do this ride if it's planned for next year sometime.

I've seen a set of RS reba's bend drastically at the the crown. They guy who owned them ploughed straight into the back of a parked transit!

Congrats to you and Donna. Will pop over soon to say hello to the ever growing Oxo family.

geetee1972 – i think Oxo has enough bikes for now. Although he will have to start thinking about young Sam's first bike 😉

Fantastic looking bike. Got a PA myself but seriously tempted with an upgrade to an Alpine. Love the green as well.

Hope or shimano. Hope are great brakes in power and modualtion terms, they are excellent for the fact that any spare part can be purchased, also hopes back up is excellent.

Shimano also great brakes for power and modualtion although maybe not as powerful as the most powerful brakes on the market. Where they score big is with reliability. Super reliable.

Both systems are super easy to bleed and change pads.

steve_b77 – the saddle and seatpost aren't BillyBulls, they are mine. Only on the bike so he could try it while he waits for his Joplin to turn up.

Needs more shiney new parts like a black headset, black cranks (raceface maybe), and black forks 😉

The colour is growing on me, still think it looks like a banana though!

barrykellett – there are plenty of smoother less technical trails to ride. Something for everyone really. Don't be fooled by the smooth appearance in that video clip though. That particular trail does indeed start off nice and smoothish and very flowy but about half way down turns into a pretty steep, tight switch back laiden rock fest 🙂

A group of 11 of us went this year comprising all abilities and both sexes. Everyone loved it and wants to go back. A few of the lads on DH rigs didn't get on with the more technical tight switch back trails though, triple clamps are just no good for them. As has been said above a 5-6 inch trail bike is ideal. A long travel HT would also be fine.

If you are into epic technical singletrack descents then you'll love the place. Much quiter and more relaxed than Morzine/Les Gets area. The one proper DH track is pretty good but the area is generally more about singletrack than full on down hill.

Trail addiction well worth going with if you want to ride all the cheeky stuff. You could easily just buy a map and go out and explore on your own though.

Make sure you ride La Varda, a truely epic technical 40-50 min singletrack descent. Here's a teaser.

IIRC hope braided hose is made by goodridge but not actually the same as goodridge hose. The internal diameter of the hose is smaller on the hope stuff. Therefore you may have difficulty threading the goodridge connectors into it.

Pretty easy to access the Waskerley way from Durham if you want a non-technical ride up onto the moors. Once up there you can get to Bolts law, Rookhope, Edmundbyers and Blanchland. Loads of good moorland bridleways around those parts.

As others have said look at Hamsterely, Chopwell and Beamish for a bit of woodland/forest riding.

I've ridden both and prefer the PA hence thats why i own one. Both good frames and they both do the long(ish) fork thing very well. The PA just edges it for me though as it has a more playful feel to it compared to the 456. If it's any help with frame sizing then i'm 5ft 11" and ride a 17", run it with 70mm stem and it's spot on for both climbing and looning.

EDIT – comments made based on the mkII PA. I understand the mkIII PA has the same geometry but the back end is supposedly a little stiffer and not as comfy to ride, cannot verify this though as not ridden a mkIII.

Dentons just closed down but is about to re-open as wildtraks (now owned by the outdoor shop wildtraks), could be worth giving them a try.

Planet X Uncle John an obvious choice as well, builds from £799, see the Planet X website. Got one myself although it's not a Planet X build, built it up myself. Absolutely love it, a really good CX/commute/hack/winter bike.

Cyclescheme have sent letters and emails out asking shops to refrain from this practice.

As the customer doesn't actually own the bike (not until it's fully paid for), the employer does, this can cause problems with the insurance.
