No its not njee – usually the scammers have removed brake lights – then its not your fault

That’s not black and white at all. A lack of working brake lights doesn’t mean you can just drive into someone who stops in a wholly legitimate place. Ultimately if you’re watching the car in front brake lights are an irrelevance anyway. How do you pull out of a roundabout behind a cyclist? Are you not at fault if you run them down?

either your fault, or classic insurance scam

It’s still your fault even if it’s a scam, that’s why it’s successful. Just watch the car in front until they’re properly gone.

I think I must move my hands arround too much ad I wear the tape down in a few hundred miles. I’ve tried everything from expensive fizik stuff and DSP to 99p stuff. And while DSP was lovely, it’s not £30/month lovely!

Do you have sandpaper hands? I tend to change mine every 5k miles or so, and usually then because I need to do cables or something. I can’t comprehend how you could wear it down in anything like that time.

Wrapping from the top is so wrong, you peel back the edges of the layers if you slide your hands down the drops.

I can do it acceptably, but the mechanic we used to have was absolutely superb, and I never got close to his efforts!

    You’re being massively unreasonable!

My MIL has mini-njee20 (who’s 2.5) one day a week, which is amazing. Consequently we rarely call on them for other babysitting duties, as I think that’s a big ask as it is. I would never phone at a moment’s notice and ask them to babysit unless it was a true emergency (and even then I’d probably ask other people first), and whilst it would be lovely to have someone take him overnight occasionally so we could have a lie in, he’s our son.

My mum is a bit further away, but always offers to help out, and has babysat several times of an evening. I would still never want to just call on her though, just because they’re older and have no mortgage why do you expect them not to have plans and thus to need a bit of notice…?

I had to read that several times to understand what you’re trying to say. I though perhaps you had let your predictive text run riot and spew forth a semi-coherent stream of text, itself a reflection on your conscious output.

Punctuation, quotation marks and formatting could be your friend, if you’d let them.

I get the evolution of language thing, and how many of our phrases were ‘wrong’ historically, but “your” when used instead of “you’re” is truly awful.

I just bought a new back case, which included the battery because it’s bonded to the back pretty securely. Don’t think it was £40 though.

Edit: yes, it was £40, this seller, been faultless.

Everyone makes mistakes. You’re not perfect.

Yep, in general I point stuff like that out. I once pointed out to a chap that his expensive helmet was on backwards. He was embarrassed, but thankful.

Yes, that was my point. Mrmonkfinger dialled condescension up to 11.

Back OT, looking forward to tonight’s episode, is it 5 parts in total…?

think you’ll find the effects of resultant atmospheric pollution are longer lasting than “immediately”. Stuff like coal lung is a long term early death for some sufferers. In our recent history the London smog was responsible for thousands of deaths every year, all related to coal fire emissions, and the atmospheric effects here were of course short term, when weather conditions did not clear the crap from the air. The “deaths” figures on wikipedia account for all forms of death not just the obvious instant explosive ones, so I think it is more than a little disingenuous to say “that’s basically it”. That attitude, being dismissive of “conventional” fuel problems, combined with ramping up the scare factor on nuclear (because it has magic woo woo that you can’t see) is what has shut down sensible discussion of nuclear over the years.

Calm down love, (fortunately) I have nothing to do with the furthering of nuclear power nor the halting of fossil fuels, so my ignorance is pretty irrelevant. FWIW I’m all for nuclear power. From reading that article I still infer that most deaths from coal production are ‘at source’, and whilst black lung is a serious issue it still affects mainly the miners. My point was that nuclear accidents tend to kill those indirectly or not remotely involved in the industry, which makes it the proverbial boogie man in people’s minds. In the same way that people are more afraid of plane crashes than car crashes – it’s that unseen threat that they’re not in control of. Coal mines going boom is more tangible and easy to ignore. Unless you’re in the mine at the time.

I use Kapton tape for electronics stuff, the whole point is that it’s incredibly thin, can’t see it being much good for tubeless/rim tape.

But that’s why you use lap power for intervals. You’re not literally going to ride 10 second intervals to power, if you’re concentrating on that you’re not doing them right :)

I still can’t see any point in instantaneous whilst mentally filtering out the noise.

With time you visually filter the fluctuations and get a truer picture of what you are doing now

But what’s the point when the computer can easily do that for you? Unless you’re doing 5s sprints (with a target) I see no point in having instantaneous power on.

3 seconds. I’ll use 30 sec average for climbing (pyrenees, etc). Lap power for intervals.

    This.

I have a ‘nice’ bike with Di2 and rim brakes and a less nice one with Di2 and discs. My next nice bike will have discs as well, and like virtually everyone else I’d prioritise the discs over the Di2, but would sooner have both if it’s an option.

The rim brakes are fine, they’re actually noisier than the discs if anything, particularly with the new pads I’ve just put in, but they just don’t work quite as well. I took the less nice bike to the Alps because I wanted the extra stopping power (and was so glad I did, it was incredible how much harder and later I could brake compared to my friends on rim brakes, and how much less hand fatigue I had as a result).

Di2 is nice, I like the hidden buttons for the Garmin in the top of the STIs, and I like having the climbing shifter, but it doesn’t fundamentally change the ride. Nor do discs 95% of the time admittedly, but on that 5% when it’s wet or there are some steeper descents they make a huge difference.

Clearly I’m not a photographer – but I find that with Kevin Sheldrake (as in the picture of “me” I linked to) – there are about 15 photos of me on R&R, all by him, and they’re virtually all in different states of blurry/out of focus. I get they’re low-res versions, and I’m sure the higher resolution ones are crisper, but I’m not sure I’d have ever bought most of his pictures!

I used to, then I did loads more racing and there were so many, most of which were really average (not necessarily as photos, but they were just me on a fireroad) that I stopped, and only bought ones which were either really good photos or had a special memory.

As an aside, my Roots & Rain profile[/url] isn’t exclusively mine! The results and the photos are half me and half someone else! @downhiller I don’t mind, I know which are me, and I guess it’s purely a product of having a common name, but thought I’d mention! I’m the (former) XC racer, not the enduro/DH one! That makes me look awful too, I wish you had older results in there when I wasn’t quite so bad!

    Me. Not me.

The DSG boxes are fitted to a hell of a lot of cars, although there are a few 7-speed variants, they’re not inherently inreliable. Their ubiquity means there’ll be lots of tales of woe. Whilst repair can certainly be expensive they sure as hell shouldn’t need anything doing after 9k miles.

Given it sounds like a downgrade in price/spec terms, even ignoring the mileage, I’d say it would be a bit hasty – why isn’t the dealer sorting this out?

The furthest anyone has cycled in a 365 day period is 86,537 miles by Amanda Coker in 2017.

And in 2019 has only done 190.2km so far.

And she did the whole thing on a circuit at “Flatwoods Park” in Tampa, which appears to be a 7 mile loop. **** that.

I really liked Deutschland 86, and whilst you had to be “in the mood” for it, I thought it was certainly better for being subtitled. It could be worse of course, it could have been (badly) dubbed into English.

    Just for some balance:

    Energy Accidents

Coal is globally responsible for a hundred thousand deaths, per PWh of electricity, when nuclear is responsible for ninety.

The issue being that a coal mine explosion kills people immediately, and that’s basically it, whilst the effects of a nuclear disaster last literally centuries, and will keep killing people for decades.

I thought the first episode was superb, I agree I’d have taken Ukranian and subtitles – but preferred English to woeful pseudo-Soviet accents. Really looking forward to the rest of it.

As an aside, every time I read Mumsnet I’m amused by the total absence of a swear filter. Whilst other forums have the most ridiculous filter to protect teh wiminz and kidz.

The only thing I can say is even when this is sorted you maybe surprised at renewal time, my son did similar in his first year on the road and they wrote his car off, renewed for £200 less than original insurance on same make and model of car.

There’s probably something in this – the reason premiums for young drivers are so high is because they basically expect you to crash, because statistics says many do. If you don’t then you should see a huge drop in premium, but having met their expectations the financial penalty may not be as high as you expect!

I saw that at the weekend, and like many was a bit bemused. I remember watching the posts as they were written, and it was extremely funny, but I agree there have been better ones, and read as a finished article it’s just not as funny IMO.

I had high hopes, but definitely a dull race. Given the whacky races-esque actions of the last couple of years – side swiping, people binning it under safety car, team mates taking each other out, and with qualifying looking ‘interesting’ I thought it would be great. Shame. Ferrari do seem to be trying to prove Vettel is best by screwing CL over, really weird. Bottas has definitely upped his game, pleased to see him winning although I’d sooner see Lewis take another title in November.

Kubica must be gutted, all the fanfare around his amazing comeback and he’s trundling around seconds off the pace right at the back. I reckon the safety car could go quicker!

I worked in cycle surgery Camden too some time ago. It was always expensive but was convenient for lots of people

I used to work in Camden, and didn’t know there was a CS, so wasn’t that convenient ;-)

I think it’s a shame, I always quite liked them and used them through choice over Evans.

I’ve got Tune Mig/Mag hubs on Farsports 38mm rims. Came to 1320g with 20/24 CX-Ray (or Aerolite, I forget) spokes. They’re very nice. Hubs are pimpy enough and come in loads of colours. They’re light and spin beautifully.

The orange valve stems massively offend my sensibilities, but they do look tempting. I’ve got latex in the good bike, but may replace with those as at Bike Discount’s prices there’s not all that much in it.

Continuing the “answering a different question” theme – I agree the Prizm Trail is a superb lens. The Prizm Low Light basically looks clear.

I wear Clear Black Iridium Photochromic at night, and they’re fine, I’d expect the Prizm Low Light to be alright.

Where is this ‘make an offer’ function on auctions of which you speak? Just looked now at some pure auctions and no sign of it for me. ‘Make an offer’ button on buy it nows sure but can’t see it as a thing on auction onlys.

First auction I found with no bids: clicky. Like I said, it goes when you’ve got bids, and yes, it’s an option. Exactly like I said…

I am not sure that anyone in Surrey does need to drive. Most schools would have a relatvely small catchment area which would make wlking to/from school practical.

That’s almost as stupid as the OP’s post! Everyone in Surrey can walk to school? Surrey is a pretty rural county and school catchments, particularly secondary, can be huge.

That doesn’t excuse the OP’s wife clearly being unable to drive in a safe manner, nor his totally lackadaisical approach to it. Fingers crossed that when it happens the only person she injures or kills is herself.
